First Time Cupola Build...I Should Have Read the Directions! FARM SHOP
I wanted to do a full Cupola Build video to show you all how easy it is...I guess I should have read the directions first, but of course I thought I didn't need them. I actually love the way this cupola turned out and the quality of it. It is made by Plyco if you are interested. This is the icing on the cake for most Farm Shops in my opinion and go a long way to making any post frame building stand out.

Haha anyone else just yelling read the instructions like me. And I called it on the upper lip needing to be screwed together first. Never even seen one of these. Super cool! Love your videos always.
I wired a horse barn with cupolas. I installed lights in them, it looked awesome at night.
What the...?! 2 grown ass men looking at the instructions...! What's the world com'n to! C'mon guys... Lol that was fun to watch, good job...
Greg.. your a hoot. And a added bonus to perfecting this show.
First thing out of the box is the instructions! 🤯
Something like a little soap should help those corner pieces slide a bit easier.
Adding a third person for filming as made your videos much better and at a high level, congratulations Mike! God bless you all.

4:30 Greg is like just read the dang instructions, Kyle
Cupolas were originally designed for ventilation at the peak of the roof where the hottest air would accumulate. Early models had slats and modern working cupolas have casement windows that open via a hanging chain.

If you don't put it together wrong before you read the instructions, the instructions won't make sense. But once you try it on your own the instructions always make so much more sense, hahaha.

Kudos to the camera guy too!!
At 7:30...."You are a gentleman, and a scholar." If you want to continue that saying, I always say, ...."and there are very few of US left!" Great videos gentlemen! Always interesting and educational but we're STILL waiting to hear Greg with his own mic! We love your back and forth with each other and it offers a lot of jobsite humor which always helps a day go quicker! Keep up the otherwise awesome work and we'll keep watching! CHEERS!!

Greg's eye roll at 11:58....lol
That Cupola is very nice, I think I may just go with that one instead of the plain vented one. Everything is looking very nice guys, thanks!
Man I thought I was about to get cut just watching you guys slide those corner pieces on.
David - San Antonio TX... Thank You So Much For Getting A Camera Person !!!!!
Damn I haven’t seen this channel in a couple years. Great video
Few years away from building my bardo. Hoping to setup a cupola as a “Widow’s Watch”. Will be a good spot to see most of the property. Just need to sort out reasonable access. Neighbor has his setup and even included switches to the lights on out buildings.
Really dresses up that roof. 👍
I hope your client decides to put a light in that cupola that look awesome at night having it lit up 🙂
Nice work as always…reference section 7.11.1 of the ANSI/SIA..I would suggest not filming violations (Greg on the ladder in the scissor lift), it could hurt liability insurance…just saying.
I always find it interesting watching other ppl do things i do as well enjoy the content 🎉🎉
When all else fails, remember RTFD (Read The Freaking Directions) Cupolas were originally created for barns so that fresh air could be ventilated to the livestock inside.
That would look incredible at night with a light in it.
Looked really good. Nice view from up there. Your videos are really good. I enjoy watching good work.
It looks great.
Nice Cupola Kyle! Well done! 😁👍
The building size requires a larger scale cupola for better proportions.

I thought the same thing, it's way too small on that big of a roof. And it would be nice if it performed some type of function, like ventilation or allowing light inside the building.

@@c.a.martin3029 They are not good for light even with the windows. But if you get a ventilated one you have to cut a hole in the base which is allowed without effecting warranty.
I Get it now. Kyle is an ALPHA builder!
I tap a scrap 2x4 block to gently get the roof stiffeners up. Then feed the tab at top in between the silver and black plates. Tightening the base bolts locks them in place. Square up the top plate to the roof panels before tightening the bolts
Gloves and paste wax would have helped. I put this same Cupola together for my garage.
After watching this.. I will install 3. All lights weathervain in the middle. I think I would even do a cut out to add light inside.
learning from the guys decades ago on this old house, you need to read the destructions....
fantastic...
Very nice
So this thing is only for show and not venting or to let light in? 😲 But funny way to overcome all the obstacles while fitting it together! 😂 Thx for showing! 👍👍👍
That was tough to watch for my OCD brain !😆
I hope a light goes inside that cupola…would be rad!

Keep on posting!
What about ridging the roof inside the cupola before the roof of it goes on? In case hail breaks a window pane. So that any water ingress goes out under the base and not through the building ridge gap. Love your buildings and detailed work. Reid in South Africa.

Down in Elgin, It's south of you.🤙
Next time put some Wax or “door ease” on the edge of the panel or the closure. It will make the splice easier to slide up the panels.
Does your clients ever watch your videos? :D Well props to your camera guy! Not many will stand on a roof with you!
What about the ridge vent? Will there be an open section inside the cupola? Looks great though!
A little painful, when we're so used to seeing Kyle being experienced and knowledgeable, seeing him waffling and and uncertain. At least (well, as of 6:40) nothing was damaged.

Well it’s a good exercise in humanity…more kudos to him for posting the video.
@9:04 Jim always like to say, "you go to school on the first one."
Why don't you set the bottom of the 2x6 x braces at the top of the grey pole brackets? So they bear on the face of the pole instead of the metal? I like to put an 1 1/2 seat cut on the top of lower x, and bottom of upper x, so the upper bears on the lower 😊
Around 7:00, that X braced corner, are those posts 8 feet apart? They look more narrow than the spacing on the rest of the building.
And I thought that a Cupola was for letting light in , and a place for rising hot air to exit
Historically, what is the purpose for the cupola? In my mind, it was intended to encourage ventilation in the heat. I don’t have proof though.

At on time cupolas on barns were pigeon coops so you could catch squabs ( fledgling pigeons) for pigeon pie.😋
didnt see any weathering on roof sheets under ridgecaps??? do you do later or add foam infills?
I can't believe that cupola kit wouldn't have the main fasteners inside the cupola vs exposed to the elements?
You would not believe how WD-40 can make things slide.
Can you show the framing necessary for a cupola in a future video
Hey could you do a variance on them and use them as an attic vent with a fan? Ive built a few barndominiums and even forced air venting is kinda coming back for attics. I could aee vent the ends and even the fans are located there but vents out the top
Did you need to use sealant before you screwed it down?
Why not seal the ridge under it? Any damage and you have water pouring into the building.
One inch of cupola for every foot of ridge is how I was told to size one.
👍✌
cant believe a man of your skill set thought a hemmed corner piece of steel was all that was gonna hold that cupola together 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was shouting, read the instructions.
Denial is the greatest delusion.

Always amazes me with these buildings that there is so little structure to them, roof trusses like 2.4m apart. We build house extensions here in Scotland and have to use steel beams for ridges and trusses are 600mm apart sometimes 400mm. Tiny compared to these buildings

Yeah absolutely, a lot of the stuff we build is so over engineered. When something like this will still be structurally sound with so few materials. It’s great to watch! Do you do this kind of work yourself?
What happened to the corner brackets you installed at 11:35? They disappeared….
🏴👍
Read the instruction so you can never be screwed.

a francis ford cupola video.
I think it'd been easier if you just built one out of 2x4s than waste time on this thing. Have you ever built one?
Keep in mind.. when the teacher makes a mistake. The students learn better from it than the teacher.
I've spent so much of my life, or so it seemed, taking people's stuff apart and rebuilding it PER THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL!!! Every piece of kit-built product comes with a comprehensive manual, usually in 4, but up to 12, languages. Some, like IKEA, do pictograms, others give you both dialogue and graphics. As long as you follow the dotted-line, you can't go wrong. Then I watched the rest of the video and there's Greg almost yelling at you for STILL not reading the freaking instructions. Read and follow the instructions. You cannot go wrong that way.
WOW ..Need direction's?.....Tinny piece of trim requires a Martinez??......Next thay will build with BLUEPRINTS ???....Might need a LVL DAAA I just watched 2 experienced builders spend more time on a prefabbed box, than thay did on the music garage ! STOP THE HARMONE BLOCKERS NOOOOOOW!!!!! HEHEHEHE LOL
Joking about and filming Greg on the top step of a ladder while on a scissor lift is a bad idea.
I hate these things. They are so expensive and a pain in the butt to build and install. I have gotten pretty fast though, i can slap together a 4'x4' (our most common size) by my self in a hour. I have came up with alot of mods over the years to reinforce them, their stock configuration just seems to flimsy for midwest winds imo. The corner pieces of the roof with high winds will vibrate and they slide down and the whole roof goes limp and flops around in the wind. I put a stitch screw at the base of all them pieces and it seems to prevent this problem.
RTFM
