How to make and draw with a cola pen (folded pen)

Ойын-сауық

Have you come across cola pens? Usually used for calligraphy, they are wonderful for drawing or pen and wash. In this tutorial I’m show you how to make them - so easy. And then compare them to commercial dip pens.
I’ll put it through it’s paces in a pen and wash of a peregrine falcon.

Great video. I've been making my own dip pens since I was about 10 years old. My favourite is a bamboo pen carved in the shape of a regular dip pen - the cavity in the bamboo stick holds quite a lot of ink. It makes very organic marks

I’ve never found my bamboo pens have been that good. You must have a better technique than me!

@@LizChadertonArt It was actually the window part of a quiche box 😂 a clear plastic, a bit like acetate, or maybe it is the same. It wasn’t too thick, about the same thickness as the coke can would be I think…. The end you attach to the stick, I curved round with duct tape and pulled it into shape with the tape….. I creased the writing portion of the plastic with my thumb nail right up to where the stick ends, just didn’t crease the part that’s attached to the stick that was just pulled in and curved round the stick with the tape….. It creased well, the tape pulled it in to keep the bend sharp and the edges close enough, if that makes sense….. It was much easier then I’ve described it lol….. For the stick I used a wooden skewer. It was literally just stuff I had to hand in the moment…. 👌 or the plastic from a punnet of grapes feels exactly the same…..

I had no fine sandpaper, do I used a nailfile. It's perfect now. I was told that correctly the rounded side of the colapen should face to the right side if you are righthanded.

Really?? I’ve never heard of a paper nib. I would probably stick myself to it! I’m dangerous with super glue. I’ll take a look.

@@LizChadertonArt Dear Lady ! At the very beginning my best wishes for the new year 2023 ! I know that several miltäry modellers for example build model landscapes to present their models. Sometimes they cut leaves out of paper and drip some drops of superglue an those leaves. And they became really hard when dried. When dried and hard it is possible to shape it with a small file, for example. I think I shall try it myself, occasionally. The vapor of superglue is not healthy, you know.

@@LizChadertonArt Once more: Dear Lady ! Today I produced a nib in just that way. I used the shape you suggested in your vid. That nib has dried, meanwhile, and it holds it´s shape. Similar to thin plastic chart. It´s too late, now. I shall try another day to scetch with it. I shall tell you if it worked. ( if it would work ? If it had worked ? If it has worked ? If it would have worked ? If ............. how is good english ? ) 🙄
