Vicki, I do these for my 8th grade middle school lab. I have them open a bag over a coffee mug for the eggs, then take the bag out of the mug to "smoosh"the eggs together before adding their other ingredients. I have the other ingredients already premeasured in separate regular zip lock baggies.

Cleo I used a heavy zip-lock Baggie and had no problems. However I know where you're coming from with heat and plastic. Like microwaving food in plastic containers isn't advised. Like wasn't concerned with it since I rarely do this and there are many boil in bag products. You have to decide for yourself. Very good point though and I appreciate and value your comment.

I used a freezer bag today with my omelet did like you say put it in the boiler for 13 minutes and it came out like perfect everything was on the inside cooked good. I just got into when I first saw your video on TV. Think a lot of people have this in their minds about Ziploc bags and other plastic bags you can get from the store. I know in camping scouts use the Ziploc bags to make omelet for survival methods. From reading the instruction on the back of the Ziploc box which states not to over heat the bag and making sure it does not melt. I read a lot of negative comment concerning that people had regarding issue with plastic bags, in your opinion what would be safety measures to know when using Ziploc bags ? When boiling it I know you said no longer then 13 minutes.

Water doesn't need to be boiling. In fact, it shouldn't be. The magic temperature is 167 degrees F. The magic time is 30 minutes, not 13. That's how you do it with a sous vide machine, but you can do the same thing on the stove, if you just watch the temperature of the water and keep it at roughly 167 degrees F.

I would never suggest doing this on a regular basis since your typical zip lock plastic bag isn’t the greatest. But have used them for this on occasion and it works incredible as you can see in my video. That said there are now plastic safe bags that are safe when heated. I can’t recall the names of them now but will look and post it.

Johnny Fields Yes depending on the type of bag you use there is that risk. This isn't something I recommend on a daily basis but if you were having a brunch or kids over for a slumber party it's a fun and quick way to have all omelets done at the same time and have guests involved. There are however new zip lock bags that apparently are food safe now. I've seen them online. But to answer your question there is that risk. It's up to you whether you want to try this or not. Certainly it's not something I recommend on a routine basis. Thank you for your question.

Prodigal Son thank you for your comment. Yes placing a bag into boiling water above 212F degrees is not a habit one should get into because the plastic can break down leaching chemicals into your food. While I don't recommend you do this on a regular basis I merely suggest it's a quick way to prepare multiple omelets at one time creating perfect omelets. Research has been done proving that when placing plastic bags into boiling water above 212F degrees the chemicals in the plastic bags whether BPA free or not CAN break down potentially leaking into your food. If you are familiar with Sous Vide there's a great discussion on this topic that you might like to read here: Read Stuart Yaniger 's comment. nomnompaleo.com/post/12463202060/cooking-sous-vide-plastic-safety Whether you boil a bag in water or leave your plastic water bottle sitting in your hot car the same reaction can occur. I do not recommend the boil in the bag omelet method to be done on a daily basis. However, if someone were looking to prepare numerous omelets when company is in town or having a slumber party I thought I would share this option. Each individual can determine if this is a method they would like to use. I appreciate your comments and agree that throwing a plastic bag into boiling water has been shown to cause effects that may be hazardous. By the way I called ZipLoc and talked with them. They have bags for microwave steaming but say they are not suitable for use in boiling water. Apparently even silicone bags aren't recommended which opens up the discussion on using silicone spatulas. I hope I've answered your question. Thank you for your comment.

We tried this at a family gathering at a lakehouse a few years ago. What your video doesn't show is how much work it takes to prepare and chop the various ingredients - peppers, tomatoes, cheese, mushrooms, bacon, sausage, etc. that folks use in their omelets. Left over ingredients were then used to prepare salads at lunch and dinner! Also when more than 2 or 3 bags get put in the pot, the stove has to get really hot to bring the water to a boil. This was a major problem for us. While the omelets were delicious, we probably won't try this again.

Next time I will be sure to remind my viewers that it does take time to prep - good point! Thank you for your comment.

You make a good point about the number of bags reducing the water temperature R, but if you're making 12 or 13 at a time you'd need a big, big pot or more than one anyway. As for the chopping time, if you're not using leftovers the time's the same whether it's omelettes, breakfast scramble, casserole or anything that's not boiled eggs or a bowl of cereal! I think this is a genius way to get a healthy, filling, hot breakfast on the table for a lot of people, at the same time. Sets you up for the day and not too much washing up. I WOULD ask; if you were doing this for one, could you cook it in the bag in a microwave? for how long? & would you recommend freezing before cooking or after? Thank you

That said this recipe isn’t one someone would do routinely but is a fun and quick way to make an omelet. Do you eat sweets, smoke, drink alcohol? This is a recipe camps use to use all the time. Of course the world is aware now more than ever of all the hazards or most in life. I shared a recipe and have a long thread of discussion about this topic and plastic bags. Some choose not to try this while others might. Just like microwaving in plastic containers, GMO, apple juice, alcohol, smoking, etc. People are aware of hazards yet we all make our own choices. These hazards or warnings are everywhere and I’m so aware. I’m only sharing a recipe with lots of discussion that I welcome. Thank you for your comments. Happy Holidays!

Unless you've tried it I wouldn't be so harsh to make a judgement. Obviously one can create incredible omelets using a skillet, but that wasn't the objective here. I appreciate your comments however this omelet is not mush but in fact is quite remarkable, fun for all to create, tasty, and perfect every time. A lot of midwesterners like food with zero seasoning, but that doesn't mean it's good. visually and texturally it is platable, but when you learn to create flavor the difference in enjoyment is immense. You don't need a skillet, just a little understanding of basic cooking technique. I see so much stuff like this passing for "good" when it could be so much better. There is this whole culture of settling for mediocre in America that makes me irate. Sorry if I'm being harsh, but midwest housewives are bad cooks, and no one is willing to take a stand about it.
