I’m about to attempt it for hubby. I’m very much a beginner but I’ll give it a go. Working with leather instead of fabric is proving a lot of fun and a challenge!
I bought this pattern and made this hat, and I seriously love it! Super easy to follow and only needed basic tools...and a LOT of stitching patience. Worth it!

Built mine today. On to the next. I have a plague Dr. hat to build. Wifey got her corset yesterday. Great patterns. Follow these videos.
Hey yall, thank you. I bought the pattern, followed your instructions/video, and made something gorgeously awesome. I recommend this especially for beginners. You'll learn a ton by the end, I promise.
Bravo! Great job. I love your method for making the indentations in the front. I have bought your bag patterns for a friend in the past.
Very informative. I particularly appreciate the information on alternative sources for high quality small diameter punches.
Wonderful tutorial I will have to make one myself!
I have cut out pieces to the tote bag from previous video. Coming along good. I’ll post a picture when I get done. Awesome plans

Beautifully done make look easy.
I will try it! Thank you !
I have a question to put to you... How do you ensure that the inside edge of the brim is the right size for the bottom edge of the crown??? I've noticed that when I measure and cut the crown and then the brim, or vice versa, the edge that attaches to the crown ends up being a good inch too big... The holes don't line up right... I hope I made sense...
bang on yet again Tony..............and the music

Where do you get the latigo leather? I can't seem to find any supplier that has it. Or is there another name for it? I have the pattern and made it from VegTan but it's just too stiff. Thanks for your hard work.
What kind of leather are you using for your projects?
Hi there. I have bought the pattern and want to use natural veg tan leather and dye it to the colour i want. Can i just use a sweatband inside to make sure the dye does not come off?
Great job, thanks! What head size does the hat fit?
Totally awesome
were can I buy metal wire that do well for a hat ?
Good Job Man..!!!
Got a question. Do the plans take into account sizing? I have a 7 and 7/8 head. Approx 63 cm at the crown. Will this pattern work for me? Thanks
Hola Tony, este sombrero viene en talla unica, o vienen varias tallas
Do you have any patterns like this with a wider brim? I've noticed all of your hat patterns do not have a wide brim in your vodeos. This is like a fedora and all the other videos are just top hats. If you do have a wide brim version, would that be on your etsy? I'm look for a flat brim western style hat that is almost as wide as your wizard hat pattern but not quite that large but larger than this hat.
well done, thank you :)
Should the crown be stitched to the outside, so that the seem isn’t vertical where rain can seep through?
@DieselpunkRo

that is my design. A little glue to the stitching can help. But you do make a good point. Most of my designs favour design before practicality. It is a choice i have to live with
Buenos dias quiero saber como consigo los moldes pues todo lo q hace es a base de moldes establecidos

Is there any way to adjust the size?

good job 👍
When making the Indy hat and adding the brim how do you make the underside of the brim cleaner? I was considering doing two layers for the brim so that the "finished" side is both top and bottom. any other ideas?
@DieselpunkRo
Жыл бұрын
Two layers is fine. I used that as well on other hats
What's the color that you used on this? Love how it turned out.
hello, can you give me exactly kind of leather, which one you use, thanks
Do you ever put a sweatband in your hats? I would think they need one?
Hello again, I have another question about the leather. I have what you would call pulled leather I bought from Tandy and it's anywhere from 4.5 ounces to 5.5 to 6 ounces, will this work for this hat? I've never made a hat before and the 5.5 to 6 ounce leather doesn't have a lot of give to the leather like the other pulled leathers I have, they seem to be a little softer leather so could you tell me which one you would go with to make this hat, it's going to be a Christmas present for my son. Thanks again for your help, I'm running out of time I better get busy LOL.

@@DieselpunkRo hun, I love 💘 all that you do for your fans. as an admirer of your work, the only criticism i have would be - listing supplies really is helpful for those of us who are in need of affordable suppliers. Some companies will even sponsor you by sending you their stuff for FREE! Example: where did you get the wire? Where do you find your leather? Thread, rivets, etc. I once asked you about the copper on your bag tutorial and you let me know you made it yourself. i would have preferred to just buy them from you by the dozen rather than use more leather. I don't like the way it looks on some things. so I decided to not buy that bag until I can find someone who can help me with it😢. I have no idea what gauge copper to use and I am not set up to work with metal. That would be an added expense I am not in a position to make right now. I am not sure anything about you or your location, but have you considered making the copper accents to sell on your websites? Just wondering. I will continue to watch and learn from you. I honestly do appreciate your time and beautiful work.
Gave me my next project idea. So now the questions, where do I download the pattern and how do you size the hat?

is there a way to use this and make a pork pie hat so i can make the fedora and a pork pie
Any chance you can make a ‘baseball’ style hat?
Tony, thank you for this hat pattern my family will love it. I have a few questions, do you over lap the wire any or just cut it long enough to meet up? Also, I read that you used Brown Latigo leather for your hat, is both colors in your hat Latigo the trim, band and hat leather? Where does a person find this wire, do you think a leather store would have it it would you look at an hardware store? Thank you for answering my questions, have a great weekend. Tammy

Hi Tammy The wire overlaps about 5 cm. The strip that folds over the wire and the band are chrome tanned leather but you can use whatever you want, entirely up to you the wire you can find at any hardware store, ask for 2mm aluminium wire let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks Tony for getting back with me, can I ask what type of leather you used for the hat, brim and top and did you dye it or was the color already dyed, what color is it a light brown or tan? I'm talking about the hat you have on your pattern that the lady is wearing, this is the one my son is wanting me to make as far as colors go's, hopefully I can accomplish this for him. Thanks so much for your help, love your patterns
very cool
I bought this pattern from you when it first came out. Was scared to death to make it. Then I bought your flat cap pattern ending up making 6 of those for Christmas gifts. They all loved them and couldn't believe I made them. My son's was the only one that didn't fit. Little too big so he wants this hat. So I am finally going to get to use this pattern after years of owning it. My question is, what kind of dye or leather treatment do you use. When I use the stuff I have, came from Tandy, my leather comes out so stiff it doesn't flex at all. Is it the dye or is there a treatment I need to use. I tried a couple of things but there is no flex at all. I am talking you could pole vault with it stiff. If you can tell which magic juice to use, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
where did you purchase your hole punch set? the 1.5, 1.8mm?
@DieselpunkRo
5 жыл бұрын
ebay, 1.8mm
That small rectangular piece in the beginning is missing from the Size 24 pattern. And I'm confused about it's purpose. You burnish the edges of it but then I don't see it being used in the hat construction. Maybe I'm missing something..
Is a 2’ by 2’ piece of leather big enough to trace the template for the brim on Edit. And is a 1’ by 2” piece big enough for the large top part?

I double checked my conversion and 2mm wire is 12 gauge and you can get it at a hardware store or home improvement center.
How do you take into account the size of any individual's head? Hat size? Not sure I got that from the video.
@kewheeler4573
3 жыл бұрын
If you buy any of Tony's hat patterns, you get all the sizes it comes in! :-) Then you just measure the head of the person it's for and find the corresponding pattern in the file he sends you. I love buying his hat patterns for that very reason!
what are the four sizes that the pattern comes with? I wear a small size about 55 cm. Do you have an amazon list of supplies you have bought to make your hats? I want to make this hat for my pow wow regalia. Since most etsy shops have the hats premade, they are not willing to sell me one naked. (no hat band). I will bead my own.
@DieselpunkRo
2 жыл бұрын
55 cm in included, its the smallest size. All you need is 4-5 oz leather, thread and the pattern
this is pretty cool. The only critique i have is that you should slick the exposed edges of the leather for a more professional looking end product. I wish i could pull off a hat like this in my daily style. I always feel a little under dressed for a fancy hat. lol

Just finished this hat and posted to your FB page. I'm still on the fence about doing the pinch. I'm concerned because I used an antiquing gel for the finish and that has a lot of wax in it which may prevent water penetration resulting in the pinch not holding.

simple , just get a piece of plywood cut a v in it, then get some 2x4 blocks. nail the blocks flat to the plywood ( not on the edge of the blocks . . will be to high). but to the edge of the plywood. 18'' x 12'' is good . and 12'' for the blocks. this is for the hat that will be upside down while the dimple will take effect. use a deep well socket for the tip of the dome to rest on to give it the valley look . put some weight on the inside of the hat to weigh down the inner sides . ( if hat has a downward slope toward the front , use 8'' 2x4 block to rise up the back to level the tip...this is for the proper dimple effect) . after items have been put together use hot water to loosen up the gel/oil. preheat the hat ( hair drier ) then slide into place. put something behind the hat to keep it in place. wait 12 hours. that should work for you.

This is closer than the other IJ hat, but the rise of the crown in the front needs to be about 2-3 cm shorter (leave the back alone). I think this would be better if the brim used the same self-wrap wire trick as the wizard's hat rather than encasing with a separate leather strip. And the crown might appear nicer by attaching the lid inside out with a fabric style seam and the turning it right side out to not have an edge showing. Also, for what the heck was that cell phone size piece of leather at the beginning used. It got cut and punched and then disappeared. Once this hat is finished and the creases set, you might want to use an old school waterproofing paste to insure it survives rain and stays in shape. Formula for past: equal parts bee's wax, boiled linseed oil, and mineral spirits. Keep in an air-tight tin. Wipe on, or use a double boiler to melt and dunk. If the coating looks streaky one can use a hair dryer, heat gun, or sacrificial iron to cause the coating to even out. Allow to cure a few days before taking into wet conditions.
