📖 Show Notes 📖
Ableton's stock piano tends to be a little bassy and doesn't stay super present, so to make this piano work for a pop ballad we will want to do three things:
1. Use compression to create sustain and add color
2. Use saturation to add higher frequency Harmonics
3. Use EQ to remove trouble frequencies and accentuate warm tones
4. Use Reverb for Long Warm sustain
The first EQ can be used to remove frequencies below 90 Hz, since we don't need the information in that frequency range. It's also nice to boost a little bit around 300 Hz, since there are some nice warm frequencies in that range
I prefer the Glue Compressor because it is a little bit more colorful than Ableton's regular compressor. Both can be used depending on what you have access to. It is okay to be a little bit aggressive with this effect because it is stylistically correct, especially for a ballad.
The saturator is helpful in adding extra harmonics. If you want a little more color, you choose a soft sine instead of analog clip.

This is great! I'm new to ableton, and want to understand all of the stock plugins and parameters to really dial in my sound. This is straightforward easy information to understand and with some great "why" along the way.

Glad you found this helpful. The details of the things vary from software software, but the concepts are the same. Depending on which piano you start with, you will need to EQ differently but other than that you should be good to go.

Any tips on redcuing CPU usage on Abletones Grand Piano. When I use the pedal my CPU goes mad. I've done all the standard things like buffer, etc etc I can't seem to fix it???

Some nice tips that can be used on a variety of instruments. I'm a long time Ableton user with still a lot more to learn. This is a bit off topic but I've been searching all around trying to find stock or Max for Live effects that will give me the Heavyocity Ascend or NI Noire arpy/generative/rhythmic/partically accompaniment thing on either the stock Ableton piano or actually my favorite, Pianoteq. Got any ideas... or maybe even links? Cheers!

Hey Gary thanks so much for commenting. I’m not super familiar with exactly what you are looking for. But based off of your description I think I would look at using granular synthesis on a piano sample. Could be totally off here but when I think of rhythm and particles that’s what comes to mind.

@@LiveKeyboardist So I take it you haven't heard any demos of Heavyocity Ascend? If not you should check it out - truly inspiring IMHO.

Just had a listen. They are really awesome. If I were trying to re-create that I would probably put ableton‘s echo device and convolution reverb on a send and have some way of manipulating the delay time. Won’t get you exactly there, but will probably get you pretty close and maybe give you part of the experience you’re looking for.

@@LiveKeyboardist I bet Max for Live is the way to go. Lots of generative stuff there. But then might be easier/cheaper to buy Ascend... I believe you can turn down the mix of the main piano voice and use your own piano or instrument for the primary sound even though the generative rhythms are still based on the Ascend piano.

If I touch the keys softly it sounds as loud as when I press it normally, or at least almost as loud (but if I press it a bit harder it's louder, so the weighted keys work). Any tips to get a quieter sound when pressed softly?
