Really good. I especially like that you mentioned greasing the sharper point of the spear and THEN burning it, some people have left that out and just skip straight to burning when they've made the tip decently sharp.

I figured out how to fire harden a spear in second grade by mistake... I had made a spear with my pocket knife then later my dad had me make a bonfire. I used the spear as a poker to move the sticks around. Later I found out because of the fire the spear became very hard.

Yup, this is definitely a better option than a Knife when it comes to survival. You do not want to engage in close range with something like a wolf or a bear which can cripple you easily with one bite so that you cannot fight back anymore. The range should also be helpful in keeping them at bay when it's more than one since wolves usually hunt in packs. (But the chance that you survive a full wolf pack attack is very slim. Even with a firearm, that would be a VERY bad situation.) Often times, it's best to rely on striking fear in wild animals when they're about to engage by making noise and act intimidating. Yelling at them is a great and easy way to achieve this. Most animals which are not actually starving or desperately protecting their offspring will run away from that. If you have fire, that's also something that animals fear. A campfire will usually repel animals to come even remotely close to your location.

I understand your point. I carry a knife on me almost all of the time (Leatherman), and I know that many other survivalists and preparedness people do as well. Hopefully you have one because it saves you so much time. If not, you can use stone tools. I've done this before, and it takes 3-4 times longer than using steel. You can use a stone hand ax to cut down the sapling, and grind the spear into a point on a larger rough stone. Even the burnishing can be accomplished with a smooth stone...actually, that's what I learned using.

It seems silly to make a spear. Yet, when you are alone and afraid it gives a boost in confidence. Most animals will avoid you just for being a human and larger. But there is always that one fur ball that can't take a hint! Especially I a marsh or swamp. Probing an area before you step. It really changes the mind set having that and fire.

Great video! Just what I wanted to know. I do have one question. You mentioned that the spear should be at least as tall as you are for safety, say six feet. In case you slip while using it for a walking stick you won't be impaled, which sounds reasonable. But what if you are going down a steep incline, reaching down the slope with the spear as you go. Now the tip could easily be lower than your head. Another good reason to make it eight feet! Or put some sort of cap over the point for walking around. My new Cold Steel Bushman arrived yesterday. I had an old wooden handle from some garden tool which fit perfectly in the handle... a jam tight fit with little effort. I've never held a real spear before. Standing there with a deadly weapon in my hands was the strangest feeling. It just felt right and fraught with possibilities and power. Could this be genetic memory since we have been using spears for at least a half a million years? There's a place in our brain for spears.

Hey Matt ~ Coupla things; I've never seen the slathering of the point and direct heat. lol, dammit, now I wish I hadn't used all my lip balm. I once read (what I was searching for) heat curing a spear one sicks the point beneath the soil under a well/longer burned fire to cure it. Have any experience with that? ~ The other was; you spoke of long term and stripping the bark the entire length. So said; lol, somewhere I've read if one is making a staff, stripping the bark before it's fully dried (near a year for some) the staff has tendency to split. Thanks for the informative vid Matt. ~ 7-8 footer makes sense. As we know out in the wood we may tip toe logs over creeks/flooded areas. Being a foot or so higher, or more, than what is below now there's impalement hazard if we goof. ~ As kids we sort of learned to make staffs length of a cane. Nice for some brush whacking but heck. I know ima mixing staff and spear, but impalement should always be of concern. Even tho I aim for shoulder height staffs when made... ..speaking of, I've hoop lanyard'd a couple staffs for nature observation from a tree. Safer way to carry up a tree; ya sling it on your shoulder and go. It just dangles for the most part. ~ Criteria for staff is strong enough to break a coyote's back and shoulder height...one can use it in a tree for the third branch to use as a seat. hmm, spear from a tree sounds a hoot...sounding like wind chimes on the way up with with two dangling ay? (-: tips me hat ~

I've seen people heat wood under coals, etc but never done it myself. I am very particular and like to see what I'm doing to finely control the process. I'd be annoyed if I stick it under the soil and wait, only to find it was overdone or underdone. Then it just becomes more work! Yes, if you strip the bark wood can split. That being said, if the wood is thin like a staff, it will dry out very fast once the bark is stripped.....1/2 inch per month-ish. Greasing the wood and heating it near the fire drives out the moisture all at once and replaces it with oil at the same time. This is what prevents it from splitting.

Although finding means to defend yourself against animals are important. The most important thing before anything else is figuring out where you are, finding water, preparing to make a fire if night arrives etc.

Yes. An ax, hatchet, or tomahawk will work also. The best woods for a long lasting spear are hard woods such as oak, hickory, and ironwood. Medium hard woods like maple will work if you aren't concerned with making the spear last.
