How To Make a Spring Pole Lathe Part 1 | Foot Powered Hand Tool Woodworking

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How To Make a Spring Pole Lathe - making a lathe has been high on my list for years and now is the time to make my own DIY pole lathe. it is a reciprocating lathe that anyone can build at home with minimal tools. I will be building the spring pole lathe with all hand tools. making a lathe is a woodworking project most anyone can do and the total project can be done for under $50.

I was pretty sure I was the last man on earth who knew how to use a hand saw. Glad to meet a fellow woodworker. (It's worth mentioning that unless you've got a proper table saw, it'll take you about ten minutes to do this job anyway, even with electricity. That's part of the reason I tend to use hand tools.)

it is easier than it looks. still faster than setting up in feed and out feed on my old table saw, but that was a slow table saw.

It's great that you are building this James. There's a lot of info on Spring Pole Lathes, but no detailed project builds. I've planned on building the same one from those plans a few times, but I keep putting it off as I have a lathe, so this will be fun to watch :)

I have always wanted a lathe. I was thinking of taking a sewing machine (treadle) base (about all the room I have for another tool) and doing something with it. No sure what to do with it. Woodworking is within my scope. Mechanics to make something work, not so much. This will be a really neat build to watch. Thanks James! (I did just made a Bench Bull.)

I hope to eventually make a flywheel lathe but that's more of a dream because it will have to have a motor in it as I don't think I have any other option but I would love to have a hybrid lathe that looks traditional but has a electric motor due to the fact traditional lathes spring pole flywheel or Barnes bicycle depend on one fact your legs have to function and I don't see my wheelchair powering a traditional lathe in this life time. I can say I'm jealous because I don't have a choice on what lathe I can use. But I really enjoy your videos.

Have you tried cross-cutting on the sawbench? If not, you should try it. It works well (especially when you can balance the offcut on another sawbench (or chair) so that you don't need to hold it with your other hand as you finish the cut)

Thanks for the video... I've watched quite few of your videos and keep noticing that chair you often use as a de-facto support.... crazy thing is I have a similar chair that I do the same with! Its part of a bedroom set used by my wife as a kid, her mother (when she was young as well!) and now my 7 yr. old daughter! Most items of this set have been cleaned up and somewhat retored for bedroom use.... but not the trusty shop chair! Still use it all the time in a similar way you use yours. Is there a story behing your chair?....Thanks again for all the great content and cheers!

James, I'm going to be opening my own shop in the future. My wife doesn't understand that hand tools are almost as fast as power tools, make less mess, less noise, pose less danger, the kids can use them, can be built next to nothing dollar wise, is a form of meditation AND they make the pieces just absolutely gorgeous.
