You can also make things on a reciprocating lathe that you can't on a regular lathe, like handled cups.

exactly! I refurbished a treadle sewing machine I got for CHEAP cheap and I love it so much. It was cheap and it works better than the crappy, cheap electric one I bought.

That was a fun build! always fancied making a pole lathe.
Really enjoying this handwork. As someone with not much money to spare it's good to see how a practical dude throws together something basic and useful with handtools
Hey I am sure someone already mentioned this, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in too: it's called a treadle. Now I can say I helped Izzy Swan with something!
I love the mind set. This made my day. Way to make the most of the situation. I think I need to make one of these.
Your inventiveness and creativity these last few episodes have really shown you can make anything... simply and without expensive tools. Great job!
I am enjoying these old style tool builds very much! thumbs up!
This is rad. You're definitely on my team for any sort of apocalyptic or emergency situation!

Izzy this is the first pump lathe I’ve seen that actually worked really well and was simple! Thx man
Hey Izzy, are we gona start calling you McGiver now? These two Hurricane Matthew video clips were good, they give me ideas for making field work benches while camping, or working on a home build job site away from the homestead. Hope your house made it thru the storm!
If there's ever a zombie apocalypse, I want to be in your group of survivors!
You are amazing. Way to make the best of your time during the storm. Mucho respect for you my friend.
it can be improved by a flywheel and get constant turning. great inspirational video.
Awesome Izzy! I come here for inspiration. You just delivered again sir. Have a great weekend!
Your ingenuity knows no bounds, Izzy!
Awesome build. Great to see y'all are safe and still being productive. I am from SE Texas and watching the storm. Good to know your hometown is not getting hit to badly. Stay safe.
You literally never cease to amaze Izzy. Really cool video
Awesome build! Take care and hope your home will stand the storm!

Awesome it has been a ton of fun breaking away from the shop for a bit and getting back to basics. maybe a mini series of video for the channel;)
I made myself one of these medieval-style spring-pole lathes for myself a few months ago and these things are awesome! Hope you and your family are doing ok, the hurricane already passed by us down in Florida and we just got power back on today. Stay safe and keep creating!

The spring-pole lathe pre-dates the Medieval period. While it's origin is lost in antiquity; it is known that Vikings used them from the archaeological finds at Jórvík, the late 9th century Viking settlement discovered beneath the modern city of York in England.
Well done, and now you've got me thinking of buying some lumber
"Pole lathe" ;) There's a long accepted, well known name for this kind of foot powered lathe. Your build is a good example of how simple these can be and still work quite well. Enormous numbers of chair parts, plates, bowls and other turnable things were produced on lathes of this fundamental form for centuries ;)
Izzy, nice build ! I guess the technical name for them I is either Treadle lathe, Springfield pole lathe. Roy Underwood was done several shows featuring them. It's amazing at the variety of foot powered tools designed around the "Spring Pole". You may very well have created a monster! Best wishes to you, and yours, stay safe ! I was stationed in Charleston during Hugo, so you did right by moving inland ! The worst though was after, as we didn't get power restored for 4 1/2 weeks ! Don't think this will be as bad.
Blown away again. This is why I subscribed. You sir, are a genius! Thanks for sharing with us. :)
Cool video! Good job on lathe! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome Izzy, simplest one of these I've seen yet
Necessity really is the mother of invention. Matthew spurred creativity and I'm loving these videos. Very, very cool! I bet the wet wood really helped lube the centers.

i tried some dried oak after the video and it worked fine on the centers but did have to tighten up the work after about 5 mintues and then it was good. the scrapper chisels did alot better on the dry wood to

Nice project! Glad you made it through the storm ok!
Great demonstration of how a decent set of tools allows you to produce more tools as you go. And careful with that little shop assistant of yours. She's great and she knows it! ;)

hay one good thing is coming out of this storm, your getting back to your cheap and easy to build roots.
this video is great! it is a totally new method I have never seen. hope the hurricane ends soon
I love it man!
That was a great project, if you want some other spring lathe ideas check out Roy Underhill's books. I really enjoyed the quick improvisation of your lathe. Thanks for taking the time to add it to your channel!
glad you're keeping yourself busy. Cool build. you only need a -roughing gouge and a spindle gouge. But sharpening them is the hard bit.
Izzy can't just sit and wait). Great, man!
I love that you didn't use the hurricane as an excuse to kick back and suck beers. Great build.

This lathe is *sweet* nice work
To get a good turning from carbide tools, you need to be spinning the wood really fast ( about 1000+ rpm); much faster than you can pump the foot pedal on your lathe. I would recommend using conventional wood turning tools. Nice project to learn how one can economically turn wood the old fashioned way. Thanks for the video and sharing!!!
Amazing!
you are an artist
I love the lath it looks great 🙃
Roy Underhill would be proud. Nice job
that was sweet!! I'm glad we all made it out safe dude....

You have a video for every woodworkers fetish. I've always wanted to make a spring pole lathe, but haven't seen much on the smaller/ portable
Hi lass, love from Scotland. Nice to see you all safe after that Hurricane passing. It has been used for centuries, so it does work well. Your design just needs some changes to be perfect. A wider chair with cushion. ;) Love from Scotland 5* :D

This is awesome, I think I want to build one, too! Maybe I'll make some kind of bench top version that I clamp down, because I don't have my own workshop.
Another great project. I always get a few tips from your videos. Today I saw your method of sharpening the pointy end for the lathe. Really good idea to chuck it and drill against the file! Thanks for the work you put out there, and for the instructions you provide. It's always easy to listen to your videos. Next up for you: Public Speaking?! Mike
Amazing job.

Nice build. I have made a couple of human powered lathes & found that the treadle lathe is the best. Not only do you have the piece turning the same way all the time (not back & forth like a spring pole lathe) but it’s so much easier to adjust your speed.
Cool project. That's something I might consider. It would be useful for handles, etc.

If you add a flywheel it will take some of the strain off of the use for a long time. Great build tho Izzy! I love the back to basic type of stuff, it really makes you realize how much work it was to make things before power tools
