How to make a sparkly two tone resin coaster - The full process

Фильм және анимация

This tutorial is a behind the scenes look at the process that happens before I move onto the final piece. For you, this is a useful step to take to avoid wasting materials by trying out an idea you have in your head, on a smaller scale.
I usually post these processes on my Instagram page sped up with no sound but I thought you’d like the full length version as inspiration.
For this piece, hear the thought process in my head as I experiment and create a two tone effect and then watch how it completely changes from the initial pour to after the resin has set and why I think this happened! This will demonstrate how important it is to test out an idea first, after all, part of an artistic process is learning from valuable lessons as a result of the process.
If you liked the end look, use this method in your chosen color tones and glitters and create your own!

    Edna So pretty! I guess I shouldn’t use alcohol ink! I thought that’s what to use. I need to buy some Mika powders. Or Can I just use the acrylic paints.?

  • @EdnaWargon

    Mica is better but if you use paints, use very little or it coagulates the resin.

    I have found that resin has a “bleach” effect on other things that I’ve used. I added some decorative paper and the colors were remarkably bleached out. Maybe the additive does it too, but in my case, I did not use the Piñata additive. Hope this helps.

    Ps...Is the Arteza waterbased acrylic? I wonder if the pink would hold up more - if you used a polymer based pigment? x

  • @EdnaWargon

    @EdnaWargon

    I think so, this was just an experiment but other shades in the same range stayed true after curing. Polymer based pigments don't change indeed as they are made for epoxy resin.

    I tried setting a rock in resin to make a tiny keychain object. I THINK I didn't stir it long enough. I certainly didn't stir it 3 minutes. Its been 5 days and my resin is very tacky and sticky. Will it eventually harden or have I killed my project and need to start over?

  • @EdnaWargon

    @EdnaWargon

    Жыл бұрын

    The problem with tiny resin projects is that thinner or smaller castings don't set hard, you may need to wait a while to see if it sets up, also try placing it somewhere warm like under a radiator to speed things up.

    I doubt it was the alcohol ink, you put so very little in and it was so late in the game. Red pigments are notoriously unstable, and I have noticed that some colors will simply ‘disappear’ or bleach out after being in resin for awhile. ❤️

  • @EdnaWargon

    @EdnaWargon

    So true, i realise that now, but i blame the acrylic paint, it does as you say, lose its colour with the heat of the resin as it cures.
