+Number 1 FIGHTS Yes, but it must be kept super dry so the ants cannot build tunnels in it. That is the reason the ground is hard in this design, so that the ants stay nesting in their formicarium and not the outworld. It is also why fake plants are used. Some people create natural nests where there is no formicarium at all and it is just one big vivarium and the ants are allowed to dig their own tunnels, etc even if it isn't necessarily against the glass. This is also a cool setup!

Use soil. But be aware that they may nest there. If you just want them to be able to customize it without nesting, maybe a thin layer of loose sand; and be sure to shake and stir the sand every so often to prevent nesting and keep the ground fresh.

  • @Nikita-nl5qb

If you want to make a full set up just use alot of test tube set ups and place them into small container that connect to the out world thats what I did. I also have a colony with the formicarium being glass with cylinder shape, with sand/loam mixture so the ants can dig, it works well and looks nice. If you want soil set up use the same thing but water it once 2 weeks.

I have never had an ant colony and all I know is that its a common black house ant and that this ant is considerably larger than the others. Any tips on how to care for my new colony? I will be capturing some workers along the trail that I got the queen from so I don't think growing the colony will be a problem.

Do you prefer glass to plastic for the aquarium for the outer world or visa versa? Does it even make a difference besides cleaning? I have an aqaurium that has a hole/plug at the bottom, ( almost exactly where you have yours, infact the size of the tank is pretty much exactly like yours here, except like i keep repeating its made of glass hah) its there to make draining the tank easier. So i could easily connect a tube to it so itlll be accessible for them to come and go. Just curious as to if glass is suitable or just a pain in the ass.

No, but it is recommended that you use cement or grout so that they can't dig too deep, a nearly fool-proof way to prevent outworld nesting. If you want a more natural outworld, use soil, but again, be aware that they can (and likely will) move to the outworld in that situation; so provide good nesting conditions if they do nest there so that the colony remains healthy.

is it possible to use your out world as the ants nest as well? like use soil instead of grout and let them create their own nest underground? I'm not a ant master so I don't know much, and this may be a stupid question but I am curious. And it seems like a better way to reduce the amount of parts that would be needed for ant keeping. If anyone knows a good answer for this please tell me. Thanks and a good day to you all

Hi, i have a quick question. Im looking to start a colony, I'm going to start off as simple as it gets with black garden ants. My question is regarding the formicarium. I was wandering if you have to make one that has pre tunnels? Or is it ok to provide a large area in which they can dig and make tunnels themselves? What is the purpose of the pre tunnels? is it just so you can see them in their tunnels or is their some sort of advantage to keeping them this way? Any reply would be greatly appreciated :)

Either one is okay, a pre-made formicarium like that of what Antscanada makes is convenient because the ants are in a controlled environment and are easier to view. A dirt setup is when you let them dig for themselves. This has some disadvantages such as possible cave ins of tunnels which can kill your colony, any possible pathogens in the dirt that is used, and they may decide to dig away from the glass, resulting in your inability to see them.

Just one question so with the barrier how do you reapply it? Do I need to move all the ants to a different outworld then reapply or what not?

You can reapply it before it goes off, so that ants won't get out when you apply it. How are your ants now??
