Hi, I was first a garment sewer and the 5/8 seam is standard there. I’ve been quilting for a decade or two, so now I’m sure I’d find a 5/8 HUGE. but I clearly remember wondering how would I manage a 1/4” seam when this journey began. Nice work on the jacket!

I’m laughing at the 5/8th inch seam! It’s a standard in the garment industry. I too had trouble sewing a 1/4 inch seam when I started making quilts!

My mother said she remembered going to the feed store with my Grandfather when she was a little girl. She and her siblings would take turns going with him so they could pick out their favorite fabric on the sacks.

I remember the feed sacks. My dad had horses. I made a quilted jacket in a class. We even made our own shoulder pads to go in it. Yours turned out beautiful.. always enjoy your channel. Great job❤❤❤

First a dressmaker, second a quilter so 5/8 seams are normal to me. The sleeve pattern would have had a small triangle for the front of the sleeve and two small triangles for the back, placed so you match the front and back armholes on the coat pattern triangles. That coat pattern would also make an excellent dressing gown... maybe flannel/minky quilted?

Just a hint on the arm holes. There are points/ arrows at the armholes one single arrow and one double arrow. That tells you what side of the sleeve goes to the front. Thank you for the video!

Ps I made a coat years ago and used corduroy and flannel. It was so warm but clung to my clothes. It was still worth it.

It is so interesting to watch a quilter make clothing. I didn't realise how much stuff is just there in my brain from sewing so many years! All that quilting stuff you know? That's stuff I still have to learn! Shawl collars are my favorite. There's gonna be one on my Christmas dress and another on a vest I'm doing. Armholes - most will have notches, and the single notch is always the front and the double one is the back. Same on every pattern out there, one of those things that hasn't changed in all the history of notches. I love this coat! Well done! Looks really cozy and I love all the color. Great job!

It’s gorgeous. My mom if she was living would be102 and she used to wear feed sacks clothes They would pay 50 cents more for the pretty feed sacks. She’d be so happy to have a new dress made from a beautiful feed sack

Usually on the bottom of a coat or jacket with a lining you don't sew the lining to the outer coat. After you wash it if you notice it bagging or puckkering at the bottom seperate the and hem seperate. Talk about 5/8" seams! I started out as a garment maker and going to a 1/4" freaked me out!! I thought how will an itty bitty 1/4" hold anything together!!! 50 years later as a seasoned quilter I understand. Tracy your jacket is amazing and so beautiful!!! I just love it. I heard at Quilt Market in Houston this year Quilt Appaeral was EVERYWHERE!! I think a few frogs on that jacket would be beautiful to hold it togather? (saves putting button holes in!

Nice coat, one side is longer in front so the bottom seam will match when you cross it over the other side. Sewed clothes for family before I started quilting

I started off sewing clothing and it was the scraps from those clothing items that turned me on to quilts. So I went from 5/8 inch seams to 1/4 inch seams and I couldn't believe such a tiny seam would hold together. LOL

I like the 5/8 for garment because if you gain a little you can let out those seams 😊

the hindsight - darker lining comment. i would also suggest you consider a slipperier lining, to help you get your arms into the sleeves. you could leave the flannel as an interlining, and add a smooth cotton, or a satin lining, perhaps darker.

Most patterns call for a 5/8 seam allowance. This is beautiful, but seems like a whole lot of work!!! But I love your end result for sure❤❤❤❤

My favorite part about this project is that you didn't destroy a perfect or minimum repair required quilt; every other blanket/quilt coat demo I've seen is so wasteful it spoils the otherwise fabulous finished garment for me.

Tracey, straight line quilting is fine for most of your coat, but please do someting special on the collar. You worked so hard figuring it out, think your rose design would be extra nice there! Love your coat! I truly admire you for making it😊😊❤😊😊

When I was a kid the first thing I made for 4-H was a jumper out of feed sacks. my mom had saved them for years. she said it would be the perfect thing to make a jumper out of for 4-H. I received an honorable mention.

I came from a garment sewing background, but have sewn quilts almost exclusively for about 15 years. I recently made a costume, and, oh boy! Taking that 5/8" seam allowance was such a challenge! 😂 Really like my 1/4" seams and hope I don't need to make another garment anytime soon!!.BTW, my costume is a green patchwork vest with a peplum using about 50 different green fabrics!

It is darling! Reminds me of Dolly Parton's song about her mother making her a "coat of many colors"😊

I used to use the cloth sacks in the ‘80’s to make duffle bags so I could take 7 kids’ clothes in 1 car on weekend trips in a “station wagon”. The feed store’s oldest workers said the cloth bags were a bonus for farmers, to make children’s clothes back in the depression era.

Tracy, I'm not sure where you live but I would try looking at estate sales or farm auctions for old flour sack materials. A lot of people used flour sacks to make dish towels. The ones my mom, grandmother, and aunt used were natural white. My grandmother would then wash them, hang them outside in the sun, then carefully remove the thread used to sew the material into sacks, and kept the thread (perhaps to tie her own quilts).

I love this so much!! I've been wanting to make a quilt coat but didn't want to thumb thru clothes patterns to try to find one I liked. I'm so glad you shared the one you used along with all the tips & tricks 😊😊 I see someone commented they used a sweatshirt as the "lining". I would like to try that as well. I already have a sweatshirt I can use-I bought it years ago to cut up the center front & crochet all the way around the front, neck & bottom. I'd made 2 this way years ago.

Beautiful coat - beautiful job! Id like to help others when making your coat to remember to flip sleeve pattern piece over so that you have a right arm and a left arm. I made a robe years ago for my husband and made that mistake! No coming back from that one as there was no more of that fabric! Now im wondering if perhaps your pattern does not have a right and left sleeve and ive made things worst. Certainly not my intention. I truly admire your work and skill it took to make your jacket! I have been wanting to make a jacket from a quilt.. it is on my bucket list but haven't found quilt. I am primarily a garment sewer and quilt some. I love this idea because I can combine sewing a garment and quilting !! Thanks for sharing your journey. I think is this going to be my winter project.. Wow what a great job you have done. I have always wanted to make one but just couldn’t use a quilt I have already spend so much time making. I also cannot understand reading a pattern that isn’t a quilt. It’s very frustrating glad I’m not alone. I now have a video to fall back on to make one thank you so much.

A quilted coat is my next project but i prefer a hood rather than a large collar

1 notch is the front of the sleeve, and 2 notches are at the back. It is important to cut them out and match the sleeve to the armhole. Nice topstitching around the armhole. Your coat turned out beautiful.

Your quilt coat is just STUNNING.

When reducing the arm hole seam down from 5/8 to 1/2 inch. You are in the process of reducing bulk around the arm hole so that it will lay nicer. If you didn't do that. You would have had to trim then clip the fabric. Garments made in a factory are commonly sewn with 1/4 to 1/2 seam allowance. Due to overlock (serger) stitching goes around the unfinished edge. Back in 1974. I worked in a factory where we put together PJ's for JCPenney. All seam allowances that I was required to sew were no more than 1/4 inch. I used overlock machines and all the other machines in the building.

One could totally use a jelly roll race quilt top as the fabric for a quilt coat...

I think you have one shoulder lower than the other, this is very common, and that is why one side's hem is lower. This is why it is good to mark hems after the rest of the garment is constructed.

OMG! U R soon cute! I just LOVE your Vintage Quilted Coat. I've been a garment sewist fir over 50 yrs & I commend your SYCCESS on making your quilted coat. I had my hand on that very coat pattern. It ez enough but I'm not a fan of that dropped shoulder style. Having taught myself everything in sewing- I spoiled to the look of the ver fitted ' set in sleeve'. I love how the 5/8" seam shocked you. I've been teaching myself quilting fir the past 2'3 yrs & yup there's a definite difference in garment sewing seamd to quilting seams. I love the quilt coat! I sewed my kids' clothes so I am used to 5/8" seams. I bought a denim coat that an elderly sitter made. It was patchwork with raw frayed seams on the outside. It was all from recycled jeans. I still have it and I love it. I could probably use that pattern and remake it. Thanks

As someone who used, 💙loved, and mourned granny's feed sack quilts after they died. 😢 I decided to to wash her other feed sack hand sewn items more carefully, so they would last. Thanks for showing how they must have looked back then, and revealing a lot of the thought process used, such as saving fabric.

I can’t read patterns either. I always just wing it. I can’t even follow simple quilt patterns. It’s one of the reasons I value you so much. I can always get inspiration from one of your videos to get myself out of a jam.

Ever since I saw you make your quilt coat I have wanted one so badly. I want a white background on mine too. I love it. I ordered a pattern for a double breasted pea coat. It keeps being shipped on a specific date then cancels. Might be snow storms. In the mean time I am watching shows on this topic hoping to not miss anything before cutting. 😋 can't wait to do it.

I've been working on it. Decided to use my scrape cause I had a lot of them and some other fabric I added if that doesn't work I will use the Pioneer woman fabric that I had got on sale in Oklahoma It's really amazing that these coat are getting vary Popular .

Once it was all together it was pretty cool. A great adventure in sewing!

You did a beautiful job making your coat of many colors! Back in 2002, I attended a class, and we made a similar jacket. We used 8 to 10 or so of different designs of cotton fabric that were cut into 3,4, and five inch widths of fabric strips. Then those stripes were cut into shorter ones and then assembled onto a sweatshirt that was taken apart and was used as the pattern and base instead of the quilt batting, then quilted and sewn back together. And like you, I was searching for every little scrap in order to finish the project. Lol Once again, Great job! 👍 Thank you for sharing.

This is absolutely a GREAT tutorial! Both visually & audibly! For me, I need to SEE & HEAR. The detail is great! Nicely done. I did a quilted coat a few years ago. Didn’t use a pattern, I just used a sweatshirt one size larger as my template for my quilt fabric. Cut out the seams on the sides - all the way from wrist to bottom. I also cut off the cuffs & bottom ribbing. Surprise! Sweatshirt was FLAT! Layered strips in a V all over. Used binding to cover edges in a contrasting color for pop. I get lots of compliments! THANK YOU for the time & effort to instruct us yokels! 😂

It's beautiful...I made a similar coat years ago and it shrunk when I quilted it and I had to add some length to the sleeves. It may be big now but when you wear a thick sweater it will be the best fit. Great job. 5/8 inch allows you to have less chance of the seam pulling apart when you wear a garment.

I made a very similar coat, but used autumn colors. Everywhere I wear it I get at least 1 complement from a stranger. Rather than quilt my fabric I used my embroidery machine and did small motifs. I quilted it as a normal quilt, rather than line it. I used Hong Kong seam finish, from bias binding. I think the trick is a very simple pattern. We were probably in production of our coats/jackets about the same time. I love yours!
