Being so extremely vulnerable is my dream, but now that you have opened yourself up I feel inspired to let people into my life. My sewing room-- actually my laundry room, dining room and guest bedroom are overrun with sewing and crafting bins, boxes and bags. I have been feeling like I need to purge all of the areas, but now am feeling like one area at a time. So thank you from the bottom of my heart for opening your sewing life and space to included all of us who struggle with organization.

@@TheSewingChannel You're very welcome. I know how disheartening it can be when you throw yourself completely into something and no one even notices. Just a note- I started my sewing room cleaning/organizing and am about 1/3 of the way, when it's done I will then go to the other rooms mentioned before and incorporate only the necessities. Charity is getting the rest. Thanks again.

@@bugsyfingersnapper5035 Well so far, due to the great inspiration, I have managed to donate 9 medium sized boxes of crafting and sewing supplies to D.A.V store. A friend of mine has a granddaughter that is getting into crocheting so I am gifting her 3 large bags of all sorts of yarn as well as sever crochet hooks of varying sizes. My sewing doubles as a computer room for my husband so he has been overwhelmed by the size of the room now that so much space has been freed up. Good luck with your venture. I am 71 so it can be done even with limited energy. 😄

I love how real your are! When my youngest went to college I took over her bedroom as my sewing room. It is wonderful to have a dedicated sewing space. I am fortunate to have a glassed in cabinet that stores my fabric and keeps it from getting dusty. I keep the overflow in see through tubs. As I am retired, I try at the end of each week to pick up my room so it feels fresh and makes me want to be in there. Thank you for showing me that it's okay to give myself grace when I can't always do that.

I have a HUGE secret, too! A 25ft x 60ft sewing/quilting room we planned and built in our shop on a small ranch when we relocated more than a decade ago. Started quilting (and building my stash and whatnots we all wind up with) back in 2001. On and off for decades as life demanded. I'm finally working on organizing as I put fabric on boards (and gleaned bolt cardboards) and sort fat quarters, endless scraps , etc. Garage sales, thrift stores and fabric gifts from non quilting friends hasn't helped lol I am so happy to see REAL sewing areas that are creative works in progress. Good for you to be so brave! It gives perspective to how 'making' makes messes and chaos at times. Thank you, thank you for your candor. It makes a difference to many who otherwise might feel shamed by their creativity zones! Go girl go

Tracy great video as always. We have always lived in a tiny house and I gave up quilting because of it after the kids came along and not having enough disposable income and space for such an expensive hobby. I live in Canada $21 per yd. I live in a city of 4 million and one tiny quilting store struggling to stay in business. Sewing takes room. During Covid I began quilting and everyone moved back home who wasn't there already and our 1100 sq ft was overwelmed. I have a double bed and all my quilting has to fit under there. Talk about not knowing what you have :) My last child moved out last week and I jumped into that room. (My husband had long ago claimed the other. When I started unpacking my fabric, he said: "just remember that room still has to be the guest room as well." We'll see....One day I showed him on videos the craft rooms American women have. Then Micheals made sense to him. Our''s is also going out of business. We have no Hobby Lobby. I am lucky I don't have these temptations otherwise, he'd be looking for a room to rent for himself :). the culture of hobbies is so addictive and they take space. It is hard to limit ourselves to just one.

Some suggestions. Because you dump everything into bins and bags, it's difficult. Loose ribbon - Get a file folder or similar, fold the ribbon as you did and tape it onto the file folder/cardboard. You can tape dozens of ribbons to one file folder. You can either tape it inside on each side, so you take it out open it and select the color, or the outside so you can see the color ... then you keep THAT in the bin. Elastic double it and loop it onto a coat hanger, again, you can store all widths and dozens of them onto one coat hanger, using the bottom and top. This can then be hung on the back of the door. For things like zippers. Get a loose leaf notebook and the super thick/strong sheet protectors. Store the zippers in the sheet protectors, by size or color etc. I use the loose leaf that stands on it's own and so you open like a book, flip the "pages" to find your zipper size/color of choice, which you have written size on the sheet protector. (you can use ziplock with sliders by poking 3 holes and using those instead of sheet protectors. This works for many things, lace, patterns, tape, etc. The sock drawer dividers that look like picket fence, (Amazon) those are fabulous in the sewing room because you can customize the size shape and height of the "box" you build and these can be made to fit fat quarters, rolls of ribbon etc.. on a shelf. I made a grid of squares that fit in a drawer for thread storage. To cut them, bend it in the spot first, then they are easy to cut. Very cheap and you can build lots of corrals for things. While I appreciate all the comments of the relieved people seeing your "jumble", I am 180 degrees from that. My sewing studio stays clean and organized ALL the time because I am one of those that can not think when surrounded by chaos. Hopefully these ideas help someone.

Maybe I'll send you photos of my "other " sewing storage room. I'm in the process of removing everything sewing from my living room. Kids move out and hobbies move in. Then at some point you have to regain control over your environment. There is no shame in having supplies. It's how you choose to find peace and functionality that makes doing your projects easier. For anyone who has admitted to hoarding it's a lifelong battle to overcome which sometimes needs a good friend to walk this journey alongside you. Tracy, I have also lost my guest bedroom to my sewing supplies. It's time to get back some perspective and feel better about myself . One huge challenge is to never have anything on the floor that needs to be picked up. Plus learning to say no when offered donations of supplies. It's easy to forget that what you do can affect the people around you that you love the most. You got this! Thanks for your openness and honesty. Hugs from the Harris home in Geraldton Western Australia 🇦🇺 ❤

That’s where my miscellaneous little stuff lives: glue gun and sticks, tape, pattern weights, Inktense Pens, etc.. I have another one dedicated to zippers - this has been a game changer! Best wishes to us all. You made tremendous headway today.

Hi Tracy!! Wow! Now I don't feel so guilty about how messy my sewing/quilting corner is. It's more like controlled chaos but I still can't see an uncluttered spot on my sewing desk. Thank you for taking us on this journey. You're so lucky to have 2 rooms but I feel blessed to have one corner in our home office that I can use and keep things out. Now, rest and relax in your cleaned space! ~~ Lynne

About 2 months ago I sat in the middle of the floor in my sewing room and I was BRUTAL. I weeded out fabric like a mad woman. After it was all done after 2 days, I felt fantastic. Now after a project I make precuts out of all my scraps and put them away ready for use

You are inspiring me to organize more and get rid of stuff I will probably never use. I am glad it's not just me having stuff unsorted. I did manage to organize most of my zippers, ribbons, strapping etc. in bins and placed them on a book shelf with labels. It's extremely hard for me to organize anything in a small apartment. I have stashes everywhere and it's a pain trying to find something I need. I don't have a sewing room and sometimes procrastinate on getting stuff out for a project and then having to put it away again so I can have a chair to watch a movie. I all so have a piles of yarn that I crochet and knit with and it takes up a lot of room. I wish I could shut door and leave it for the next day to start on a project again.

My plan on zippers is to use up all the size 4.5 (byAnnie) zippers I have then only buy the large rolls of white and black from Wawak then cover them with coordinating fabric so I don’t have to deal with colors any longer. If someone wants a special zipper, they can pay for it. My strapping all has labels on them with the length remaining marked. Same with zipper tape. I need to sort everything fast - I’m moving sometime soon and have no idea when or how much space I will have. Yikes. Here’s yet another plea/request for a tutorial on that Quiltmas quilt. I absolutely loved it.

Honey, all crafters have a dirty little secret like this room. It's alright because it's just part of it. I did clean up my craft room last week and got all my books up on shelves and got rid of yarn because I just don't care for crocheting much anymore. I've got to find someone who wants 3 13 gallon bags of yarn. 😂

My kids call my sewing studio a fabric store:) I am continually moving and organizing my stuff. One thing you can do with that wash away embroidery interfacing is use it like scrap tape for crumb piecing. Just make sure you use a dry iron. Ask me how I know:)

I think most of us who sew are the same way. All our stuff just kinda overflows. When the kids leave you gotta do something with the empty rooms, right? I have a “craft” room, a sewing room and an overflow room that’s the “guest room.” Good thing there’s no more rooms in my house!!! LOL😂

It’s interesting all the organizational differences we all have. Baggies of stuff organized or not gives me anxiety. For me it’s over stimulating visually. So smaller bins (not shoe size, about double that) where things are clearly labeled makes me stay more organized and limits what fits. If I find a bin becomes full, it’s time to donate. Usually one quick visual check tells me if things are more than two years old, then in the donation bag it goes. This episode made me want to go reorganize again! But I will wait as there are other areas in my home more in need of organizing. Thanks for taking us on this journey and being honest, it’s scary opening up to others online through your channel. But what really happened, by filming yourself and sharing with us, it was like you were talking to your best friend while FaceTiming which is always fun to do when you want to chat and work, it makes the time fly!! I have used that before! Thanks again!!

Thank you!!! At least you can walk through both of your sewing rooms. I have 2 rooms also, and over 20 large totes of fabric in the garage, but I can't walk though that whole area either. I find myself spreading out my work and not putting away leftovers when projects are done. Thank you for making me face up and try to improve. You beat me on the zippers, but I can't part with them.😂

Tracy, my room once looked like that. Then I followed Karen Brown of Just Get it Done Quilts Decluttering challenge, now my room is neat 90% of the time and it’s a pleasure to go in and sew. Because you do tutorials I know you can’t get rid of nearly as much as we can but it can’t hurt to take a look when you have the time. Love everything you do, you are a joy to watch.

I LOVE videos like this! I like the discussion about what to keep and why and where. For many years my sewing stuff was squirreled away in different parts of the house because I didn't have a sewing room. Eventually I was able to fix a leaky garage and install electricity and cabinets with counters. Box by box and bag by bag. I gathered sorted and labelled. I can now find what I have quickly and without churning everything up and no longer give up the search and buy more of what I have. So much more sewing time! I still only sew there May to September [🇬🇧 weather] but on cold days write myself a shopping list to quickly grab what I need but do my actual sewing at the dining table [we eat in the kitchen]. I find a 'returns' basket helpful to put things in as I have used them in a project is useful and when the project is complete I go put everything back for next time. Well mostly. January is just too cold to linger. I hope you'll update us with a 'what worked and how productivity was affected ' video in due course. 😘
