I started following you in 2020 when I was recovering from a total hysterectomy due to endometrial cancer. I taught myself how to quilt while recovering and isolating because of the pandemic. Loss of hormones, lack of exercise, body changes have all resulted in major weight gain, clothes that don’t fit and heartbreaking hair loss. Quilting has helped me keep my sanity as I focus on losing weight and getting active. I am cancer free thank God. Thank you so much Karen for this video, I needed to hear I am not alone in this boat right now. Looking forward to watching your progress on this coat and health journey! Thank you for all you do!

I would be absolutely happy to look like you in the coming years. And if you want to wear a quilt coat? Wear the heck out of it!!! It would look great :) Thankyou so much for your candor and honesty, vulnerability. Your feelings are completely valid- we as women are always being made to feel like we are not "enough." Making my own clothes (when I do it) has really helped me accept my body. I cut up all my too small clothes and now I'm making new clothes out of them. I often have to make my own patterns which is really not my strength but it pushes me to see my body as it really is not the bloated blob I see it as. I hope this journey helps you find peace with your body.

Thank you for your courage and candor. My weight has been resistant to all interventions, lifestyle and medical. In 2021, I took the plunge and started making my own clothes using patterns from companies that specialize in fitting plus size bodies. I still have to make adjustments, but they are tweaks, not heavy duty changes. And I get to see the patterns on models who look like me, not a teenage starveling. My body is still a challenge, but for the first time in my life, I don't hate getting dressed. Fabric shopping is way more fun than clothes shopping.

Hey that is cool! What company do you get your pattern from? I used to make all my clothing in college and because I took a pattern design class, I learned how to make everything fit my body. Now that I am a size 2 million, I don't know where to start with making my own clothing. Not only does nothing fit, but most of everything at the stores is really ugly. So, I have been thinking of making my clothing again for a couple of years now.

@@marylourimmasch4301 really appreciate that you also find store clothes ugly, including both the designs and the fabric choices. The plus size clothing stores have very expensive prices too. I was an Australian size 12 , my 1st wedding, size 16, 2nd wedding and size 20, 3rd wedding. I still believe I'm beautiful just more curves. Perhaps the biggest challenge is not finding your own colour scheme but finding your own perfect styles for yourself. With a focus on recycling I have chopped up and culled most of what didn't fit me, now I'm far more critical of what do I actually need. It's definitely a journey of self discovery.

I am SO sorry that you lost your husband 😔. I cannot even imagine what that would be like. I watched my mother going through all of the "firsts," my sister and I trying to help. There were even the little things like the first time she had to buy tires by herself. I'm praying for you right now as you going along your journey. Momma did a little journaling. After that first year she was amazed at all of the "firsts" she accomplished and was so proud of herself! I don't think she realized how much she depended on him until he was gone. He started teaching her things around the house a couple of years ahead of time. Before, if asked, she would have told you she was independent and self-confident and knew all she needed to! Anyway, I'm sorry to go on like this! I like your idea of envisioning😊. I was telling Karen in a comment earlier that I call all that noise in my head "the committee" 😄 and it seems to me that mine doesn't have much good to say. It's negative rather than positive! So one day when it dawned on me that I couldn't think of 2 things at once, I decided to "filibuster" the committee with positive thoughts and actions. Like you with your envisioning! Best of EVERYTHING to you!! 💕❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕

Lost my mum April 2020, married for the 3rd time Halloween 2020. Lots to process with life changes. Baby steps, I have great support around me, that's the biggest difference to other periods of my life. Weight, health, food and clothes are all the sum of daily choices, from getting out of bed to am I going to sew today. The message I hear the most is start with being kind to yourself. I know it's a journey and making tiny changes has helped along with a few good friends and cups of tea.

I also buy fabric, planning on all the dreams I had for retirement and finally time for myself. Now, I am guilty of stockpiling, and the house is such a mess, I may never get to sew for all the cleaning I have to do. Thank you for explaining NOOM. I have been wondering how it works and this was just what I needed to go ahead and get it done. I retired in April of 2022, and now my body just seems to be falling apart. I just found and bought a pattern for a very boxy coat at the thrift store. Front, back and sleeves are rectangles. Hippy - Oriental vibes. It is OLD, probably '70's, printed on craft paper to be traced onto tissue. Not a name company, but the kind you would find in quilt shops. Check out "The Last Homely House" on KZread. Kate is working on a lightweight, long coat using Boro technique and a pattern printed in a new book she recently bought. Think it is "The Book of Boro".

I made a simple vest for my son before Pandemic, BUT I put the buttons and holes on the wrong sides. He gave it back to me, gave me more fabric and asked me to make him another. It would usually take maybe 3 days, they are easy----took me nearly 2 years to finish that second one and change the button holes on the first. I struggled with it, cried over it, made all kinds of excuses for it. FINALLY mailed them back, finished, a week ago, he loves everything about it!!! I sent him a note, "blame it on COVID," he laughed but really I can't explain it either, just am so thankful it is done. I do remember shuddering when last Christmas passed and didn't have it for him. I knew he was disappointed, will never forget it. And all I want to do is quilt now---nonstop!! Oh, yeah, there are those stupid soup bowls my SIL wants........

The personal coaching and group interaction are a big plus for me. I too have been a huge garment sewist in the past and had not made myself any clothes for years because I wasn't happy with myself. I'm going to start sewing those things now though! Oh, and I'm impressed you chose a princess seamed coat pattern. I think most (,if not all) of the ones I've seen are very boxy. Oh yes, me too. I started by cutting up a long sleeved t shirt, as a pattern, cut it out, made patchwork pieces from Tula pink fabric. Just didn’t measure me! The t shirt was stretchy, my fabric not. I’ve been unpicking for weeks, having wadded and quilted. I’ve added fabric, cut it off, restarted, cried, told a friend who said what are your measurements, hmm. So, defeated, I’m trying again, what a waste. So glad to listen to you. I’ll try again, buy a pattern, more fabric, oh gosh.... I’m no seamstress, I’m too plump, yes, I’m cross with myself. Start again eh? I really want my Patchwork jacket, more research on how! I've also been toying with the idea of a quilt coat. I'd love to see how you tackle the challenge. I liked your path and strategy that you shared. It will be nice to have something for yourself to enjoy. You are a very giving person! Don't forget to give to yourself and give yourself grace too!

I see that I'm not the only one that can relate to this video. I appreciate you sharing this. Ever since reading "The Lost Art of Dress" by Linda Przybysewski a few years ago, I have wanted to get back into sewing clothes for myself. But my weight has stopped me. Recently I started watching Bernadette Banner's KZread sewing videos, and again, it motivated me to sew my own clothes. But I still weigh more than I'm comfortable with. Watching your video has inspired me again and I might just try Noom.

Thank you for putting this out there and sharing your struggles. Your story hit home for me on so many levels. It is so encouraging to know that I'm not alone in what I'm experiencing in my juggling act with work, home, and family. Self care takes up a big part of my head space but very little actual time spent. A shift in my perspective is needed and this video is giving me ideas on how to go about that.

We are all on a journey, and most women I know think about their weight on a daily basis. It takes up a lot of valuable head space! I came to the realization that I just wanted to be strong and healthy as I aged. My priority was to keep my mobility and so I started pilates and made that my daily "job". As I got stronger and my shape changed, I began to research healthy eating. My point is that one action leads to another. I now have the energy to quilt(!) walk and travel. Keep up the good work, Karen! You're an inspiration on so many levels.

Love your candour about your difficulties getting launched with this. I sew most of my own clothes and have been meaning to make either the All Well Cardigan Coat or the Tamarack Jacket, the first out of an old quilt I have in the back of a cupboard, and the latter a quilt-as-you-go project. You've inspired me!

Boy, you have struck a nerve. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You are such a motivator, your struggles makes it real. You have basically described my own struggle. I used to make ALL my clothes ( exept underware and knits ) but I was a size 6. That was fun. Now, 30 yrs later, i'm XXL. If I might suggest : take a good basic pattern, make the ajustments, test and make a good copy to work from. When you loose or gain 15-20, your shape doesn't change, i't just a bit larger or smaller. Easy to ajust with the side/center seams. Since you already made that basic pattern that fits your shape, just play with the seams. I will follow your progress with all my encouragements and kick my as s in the process.

Regardless of the sizes in your country so many women struggle with body changes, we all thought we had under control, until after 40 when reality hits. You described my size dilemma perfectly. Australian size 8 to 10 at 18 and as low as 51kgs, at 58 I'm double the sizes and not quite double the weight. I have my good days and my tough ones, it's the daily choices we make that makes us. I've considered going back into making clothes but mostly I get given enough things I don't need much except underwear. Having discovered my sewing mojo with bag making and now quilting my happy space in the sewing room has helped my mental health and focused on making better daily choices with a great support network of newer friends and a serious KZread addiction. Your comment speaks of self acceptance of body changes, I like that.

Karen, I completely understand. I went through menopause at an extremely young age and have been fighting my weight since…I was only 32 when I had to have surgery. I lost 30 pounds before Covid and now have gained 15 of it back. I get so disgusted with myself. Thanks for the inspiration! I will check out Noom. Keep up the good work…you can do this! And it isn’t about a number on the scale as you know. It is about health and being able to enjoy what we love. I wish you the best on this journey. Make the coat a little smaller than what you need now, you will be smaller by the time you need a coat again!

“Love and nurture yourself!” I heard that recently and it’s so true, bc we usually have negative self talk. But how would you treat yourself if you were being loving and kind and nurturing? Hot bubble bath? Kind words? Do fun stuff? Encourage yourself? Think, “how would I treat my best friend?” I think I’m gonna make a wall hanging with those words to remind myself! 🤗😁

I don’t know how many times I’ve taken out the fabric put aside for it and a couple of patterns and look at it all only to put it back in the bucket. It’s not as though I haven’t sewed with patterns before- I used to do them a lot when I was younger but I’ve only done quilting these past 30 years lol.

I have recently completed a quilt vest. Our climate doesn't warrant a coat. I used a vest that I had as a pattern and a good friend to help me cut and fit it. I was able to move forward when I purchased a beautiful Kaffe fabric, in colours I love. Found the perfect fabric for sashing, lining and binding. . The most creative I have ever been. I love wearing it and sometimes notice people taking a second look. It is a statement garment. Enjoy making your coat and I look forward to watching the progress 🇦🇺😀
