How To Make A Pressure Pot and Turning My First Hybrid Pen Blank

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I take you from a basic pressure pot for painting and show what it takes to convert it to a pressure pot for making acrylic blanks that can be used for pens, handles, bowls and more. I don't stop there. I actually show how i made my first hybrid pen blank. That's not all! There is more. I continue on my journey and actually turn my first pen. I hope that you not only find this information useful, but that you find it entertaining. I will be doing a whole lot more resin casting in the future. Not only do I love the creativity of blending colors and materials to get a stunning finished product, I really enjoy turning the blank into something beautiful and useful.
Below I will not only have links to all the parts to upgrade the pressure pot, I will include a link to the page that has a list of all the products I use in my videos. Thanks for everything.

Nice job. Well explained. If anyone tries this consider using a low torch or heat gun to loosen the existing fittings. Whatever they use dries hard and hard enough to actually allow you to snap off the relief valve and it is a poor excuse for a sealant. Use a deep well socket wherever possible. Also, after returning 2 of these I realized that they all had small leaks at the fittings so the hard sealant they use sucks, so just plan on removing and re-sealing all of them. Use a thicker sealant like he uses in this video, not loctite or teflon tape. Once you do that it seals and works fine. They don't tell you in the instructions but the relief valve is adjustable by turning the slotted fitting on the top. Mine kept opening at 45 psi before realizing that it was adjustable. (DISCLAIMER: be careful not to set it higher than 50psi.)

It's most likely red thread loctite which can be melted with heat like you mentioned. Commonly used in auto repair when you don't want something to come loose. Comes in two main types. Red and blue. Blue doesn't need heat to loosen it.

I'm with AndyB on this one...Nice job and I can see one of these in my future. I always put my pen tubes on the lathe in between the pens bushings and clean them with a solvent to get and oils let on them form the manufacturing process and then sand them on the lathe. It goes real quick and easy this way and I get a really good "tooth" on the tubes.

  • @ManCrafting

David Coburn pressure reduces the size of bubbles. It’s typically better for resin casting. Vacuum is used to do stabilizing. So it’s pulling the resin into the would by a vacuum.

Something you may be interested in trying. I did an acrylic blank and left the tube as is, someone recommended painting the inside of the hole drilled with paint, like silver or whatever, so the brass didn't show through.

Mike Hebert Drew from Ox in the Shop also mentioned this. I didn’t mind the Brass, but I was not happy with the way the glue was spotty. I tried to create a brushed look on the brass. The paint tip is a great idea. Thanks.

Yeah, the paint on the inside hides the glue, too. I had that issue on the acrylic blank I did a couple weeks ago. Ok Chad, I've gotten into the powdercoating because of you and I've always liked custom pens. So after watching this and several other videos afterwards... I'm intrigued enough to where I want to get started. I want to be able to turn pen blanks, bowls, and cups. What would I need equipment wise to get started doing this? And any pointers on websites for supplies?

I have to say that woodturning is a lot of fun, and I can't imagine many people wouldn't enjoy the satisfaction that comes with turning a block of wood or a tree limb off a fallen tree into something absolutely beautiful and useful. I'd shop around for a lathe. Maybe even a used one. I have a jet 1221vs. I noticed a lot of the stores that provide classes use this and I could find anyone that said it was junk. It's a midi or Mid size. You can get a mini, that is really a pen turning lathe, or a full size and they can get up there in price. Once you have the lathe you'll need a chuck. Nova makes great chucks. They have several options. PSI or Penn State Industries also has their own chuck that a few friends have. It gives you a lot of flexibility with several sets of jaws. www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html That said, there are a lot of projects that don't require a chuck. Next you'll need turning tools. There are basic sets out their. Two options on style, traditional and carbide. The learning curve on traditional is a little steeper, and carbide is quick. I turned something with no instruction the first day I owned my lathe. I think Lathe tools and a lathe is the bare minimum. Some people even make their own carbide turning tools. Which I want to try. So for places... Not sure what you have local, but online www.woodturnerscatalog.com/ and www.pennstateind.com are great resources. There are a lot more out there as well. Hope this helps.

They will work both as a pressure pot and a vacuum chamber but you need to use a dual vacuum/pressure gauge. I tried putting resin under a vacuum, instead of pressure, but did not get good results. The resin bubbled up and hardened. Conclusion: Resin is too thick and cures too fast to vacuum. You have to put it under pressure.

I do have some leakage that I need to run down. Very well may be that fitting. I'll let you know. As for the brass tube. I was ok with it being visible. I has sanded it uniformly to look like a brushed finish. The problem I had was the glue didn't cover consistently, which could have been a bigger problem if it blew out. It didn't, so that's good. After I posted the video a friend of mine, Drew Oxford from Ox in the Shop told me he paints the inside of the blank to cover hide the glue up. I also watched another of NV Woodtwerks videos on gluing acrylic that should help on future acrylic projects.

Some of the air pressure valves are set very low, and some are just plain faulty. First try adjusting the screw on the pressure relief valve to see if it will hold the pressure at a higher level. I don't have one in front of me at work, but turn it so the screw is tighter, I believe clockwise. This should allow it to hold to a higher pressure. If you can't get it to hold, it may be a good idea to buy a more reliable pressure relief valve. I know some people change it right a way, I've been lucky so far. Also, make sure that it's the valve that is leaking and not another place. I had a mad weld and had to exchange mine.

Enjoyed your video but have some non-critical observations: 1. The Chinese built Harbor Freight pressure pots are only good for 60 pounds which won't get rid of 100% of the air bubbles. If you get an American made one, you can jack your pressure up to 200 pounds which will dissipate all air bubbles. 2. That being said, I would not reuse the Harbor Freight pressure relief valve. They are notoriously unreliable. Safley test it to see if it blows at 60 pounds. If not then replace it with an American made 60-pound version from Amazon. 3. If you add an elbow on the bottom side of the lid where the air enters, it won't blow the resin out of your mold when you fill the tank. 4. Sometimes those Harbor Freight pressure pots leak which can be fixed by putting a little Teflon rubber lubricant on the gasket. 5. The bottom of the pressure pot is curved so it is hard to get a mold to sit level especially when air is entering the chamber. To fix this, cut a plywood circle the same size as the inside diameter of the pot and put it in the pot. That will give you a flat surface to sit your molds on. It will also catch drips and runs so they don't collect on the bottom of your pot. 6. Get a 2" radius carbine tip for your scraper (a curved square), you will find it works MUCH better. And you won't have to use an inside scraper to do your finish work. 7. When you mix your resin so fast, you will introduce air bubbles. Stir slower and get fewer bubbles which is what you are trying to eliminate with the pressure pot. 8. You will get better results if you dump the mandrel and turn between centers. It is more accurate and will save you from off- center blanks caused by an over tightened mandrel. That is all. Carry on.

As for the plywood bottom I made one with my logo and posted it on Instagram a while back. Absolutely a great tip. The stirring I have found to be true as well. Bubbles are not good. Slow and steady is much better. If I start casting more, I’ll look into a better made pot. The harbor freight is definitely a compromise. I’m usually the person who would rather buy once. Not sure why I went cheap on this. I also have the elbow on. I can only imagine the mess. Thanks again. Great info.
