Use a 3D Printer to make Custom Pen Blanks for Turning
In this video I look at making custom pen blanks on a 3D Printer. I recently purchased a 3D Printer and now I am looking for ways to use it in the shop. This is one of many ways to use a 3D printer for some shop projects.

    Octagon pen would look great printed in a dark brown and filled in with a bright yellow. Look like a bee comb

    I agree, but I don't have brown or black filament. So I printed some with Yellow Filament and will fill them with red, blue, black and maybe purple.

    OMG! When I uploaded my pen mold design I hoped someone would reuse it but I *never* expected to stumble on someone featuring it in a video. That is so cool! Thanks for that. (I uploaded the double chevron design you said you really liked.) I'd love to see what it looks like when you re-make it with better contrasting colors.

    T. Rob Wyatt, that is really cool! Your design is the one that I really liked the most. I am actually printing your design now and should be making a couple of pens next week. I will be posting that video sometime in December. I am just learning how to design my own pen blanks.

    @@MadNerdWorkshop I am looking forward to it! The latest video in my channel shows how to visualize a 3D pen mold at different barrel sizes using Tinkercad. The video shows how my double-chevron pattern looks when the finished barrel is 12mm-20mm in 1mm increments. You can easily adapt this to show any mold file from Thingiverse at any barrel size. I also posted it to Instructables with some text explanations. Safety warning - resin doesn't stick very well to some of the plastics we make molds from so be sure to wear eye and face protection!

    Excellent video! Can you comment on how your printer has held up over time? I’d like to know if it makes more sense to spend more to get a different model. I was surprised that yours was so inexpensive. Thanks.

    Thomas, I can recommend this printer. It had been going non-stop from the day I purchased it and it is still going strong. I would recommend the upgrade kit for it which has the heavy duty springs. That really help make this printer easier to use. Hope that helps.

    Great Question John, and something I should have answered in the video. No, I did not design that, I am still too new at that 3D printing. I am starting to make some stuff in Sketchup but so far everything has been downloaded from thingiverse.

    Absolutely love this idea and the options are endless. Thanks for sharing this technique. Would you mind sharing what you sell pens like that for, just curious? Where is the best place to get pen kits? I am just starting off and it is a bit overwhelming, but seem to be running into the same kits by different vendors. Does the quality vary or just the price? Excited to get started...Lathe, mandrel, and tools have arrived. Just working on blanks and picking out pen kits.

    Honestly Calvin, any of the pen places are the same as the others, I purchased from many different suppliers and they all seem to be the same. Just get the best price you can on them (Sales!). As for selling pen, I do not sell them, so I have no idea what they are going for in the market place.

    Love the 3d printed pen blanks. I have a couple of questions. 1) I'd assume it is 100% infill? 2) The hexagon one I was not able to find on thingiverse do you by chance have a link?

  • @MadNerdWorkshop

    @MadNerdWorkshop

    Hi Diggler, sorry for the late reply, Yes the infill is at 100% and as for the hexagon one, I just typed in pen blanks and it came up with a number of other. Hope that helps.

    I'm currently out of Alumilite, so I can't test this right now, but I wonder if this will work as well printing with ABS instead of PLA?

  • @MadNerdWorkshop

    I am just learning all the materials for this printer. But I would think you could use ABS instead. There is always one way to find out.:) Thanks for watching.
