Converting a Harbor Freight paint pot into a pressure pot for resin casting

In today's video, I'm converting a Harbor Freight pressure paint tank into a pressure pot for resin casting. To complete the project, you will need the following items:
Harbor Freight Paint Tank - www.harborfreight.com/2-1-2-h...
1/4" Ball Valve - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
1/4" Brass Angle Adaptor - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
1/4" Female Brass Cap - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
1/4" Male NTP Plug - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
3/8" Male to 1/4" Female adapter - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Teflon Tape - www.amazon.com/Skylety-Rolls-...

    What you are doing is plumbing. Teflon tape went on backwards, always make sure to have the tapes end flow the direction of threads as to not unravel it while threading. - pro tip - good job overall though.

    Suggestion, pour a small amount of epoxy into your pot. Will give you a permanent FLAT bottom in the pot.

    This is great! I can’t wait to try it. My air compressor is teeny though, 1/5 HP. Think it would still work, or will I need to upgrade?

    Thanks! It should work, it might just take awhile. Building this has made me desire a slightly bigger air tank setup. I'll have to post a follow up video on air compressors when I finish my research.

    Thank you for a good video! My problem now is trying to find out why it won't hold the pressure. I've used lots of soapy water and found a few things but still if I run it up to 40 or 50 psi, in an hour it will be down to 30, down to 20 in another hour...I should be able to leave it for a couple of days without running the compressor, true? Any suggestions? One of the guys in my club has a really awesome pressure pot but he spent around $400 on it.

    It should be able to hold pressure at the set psi for several hours (if not longer). I ran into some issues with really bad threads on mine and ended up buying a tap for the size threads to clean them up. It helped on a couple of the threads and I just ended up over taping the other ones.

    Now if only I can get mine to stop leaking air out the lid at 5+ psi so I can see if anything else holds air -.- is there also anything that can dampin or muffle the sound from the air compressor?

  • @TheAmateurHobbyist

    @TheAmateurHobbyist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry I missed this comment! I've seen some folks that have built a box around the compressor to help muffle the sound a bit. I do believe you can get quiet air compressors as well, but that usually comes with a higher price.

    Rick, if you're referring to the retro adjustable wrench, I picked that up from @HandToolRescue. I highly recommend his videos. He has a video series talking about these wrenches and the one I have he shows being made here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YmpsxMydiNTSqJs.html.

    So I did this and I'm going crazy. First one of these I ordered from Harbor Freight, Fedex basically crushed it and I had to go drive to replace it. Once I got the replacement, I've been going mad fixing all the leaks. Now I'm finding one of the pots screw downs isn't long enough. I can screw it all the way down till there's no thread left and it still wiggles. Ever have these issues and have any suggestions?

    I have heard of folks having quality issues with these pots. It's unfortunate, but I'm not sure there's much of an alternative aside from maybe finding a local Harbor Freight and manually inspecting them in-store if that's an option.

    I'm a huge fan of Knipex pliers. These are the pair I believe you're referring to in the video: www.amazon.com/Knipex-8603250-10-Inch-Pliers-Wrench/dp/B000X4OG94. These have parallel jaws without teeth. I highly recommend them.

    Never use vice grips or channel locks on a nut or bolt for that reason! That's why the make wrenches that come in many sizes, sometimes an adjustable open-end wrench will work.

    So what is the nut on the inside of the lid?

  • @TheAmateurHobbyist

    @TheAmateurHobbyist

    I talk about that right around the 2 minute mark. It's an air diverter, so you don't blast air into your resin while filling the tank with air.

  • @sonideDent
    @sonideDent Жыл бұрын

    So do you keep the air converter in or remove it?

  • @TheAmateurHobbyist

    @TheAmateurHobbyist

    Жыл бұрын

    Do you mean the air diverter on the bottom side of the lid? Yes, I kept that in. I mention that around 2 minutes. It'll make sure the air, as it's coming into the tank, doesn't blow directly onto your project.

  • @TheAmateurHobbyist

    Hey Caleb! The safely valve is a pretty basic mechanism using a spring to provide enough force to push back against the air. The safety valve that I used has a screw around spring plunger. You can tighten this screw until your tank is holding the correct pressure. Make sure you are not over tightening this screw or you can put yourself for risk of injury. I set mine for a pound or two over what I was aiming for, but still well below the rating of the pot.

    Loved the vid. Making the adaptations was not difficult. Problem…..the lid itself had a leak where the blow out value was located. ( found using soapy water) . Ok things happen.. I returned it to Harbor Freight. They were very nice and quickly exchanged it. Happy me. Problem…. This one had a leak in lid around the base where the pressure gauge attached….maybe “MADE IN CHINA” isn’t worth the saving. With the price of gas now a days I’ve run out a lot of gas because the nearest Harbor Freight is at least 30 miles from me..

    Thanks! Yeah, when you go cheap you run into other issues. I lucked out with mine, I do think I have a small leak somewhere that I haven't tracked down, but it works well enough when I need it. I am planning another video soon with some additional modifications to make it a little nicer.

    Yeah it's a bummer Pam. In order to get the most out of harbor freight you really need the skills to be able to fix or modify the things you buy there. It might even take welding to fix some things! 😂 I've had to modify nearly everything I bought from there.

    That's pretty normal. The sounds you're hearing are usually some minor expansion in the pot. As long as you are below the pressure, which you are, you should be all set!

    DEAR MC G , get a 5 gallon stock pot (to make soup ) a sheet of glass and a $5 buck gauge TO do same job for about $20. no need to DESTROY waste the pressure pot Donate the pot to someone starting a painting business .ps:The moisture inside the content in "VACUUM CHAMBER" will saturate card board on the bottom , collapsing honeycomb cardboard by vacuuming air inside same , spilling whatever inside of the now bottom spill-pot , etc...

  • @jryddle

    @jryddle

    Жыл бұрын

    A vacuumed chamber and pressure pot do not have the same uses. If you put a resin mold I to a vacuume the air will violently bubble out to make a useless cast. A pressure put does not degas, it adds atmospheric pressure until the bubbles are microscopic. Once curled the resin appears clear. Also suggesting just a piece of glass with no real information is irresponsible, many glass panes will shatter when put under that pressure.
