How To Make A Photography Zine

Here is every step that I took to create my first photography zine, 30 days in Mexico. By the end of this video, you will have all the knowledge you need to start creating yours. (30 days in Mexico was an edition of 100 copies and is sold-out).

    Best explanation of the process I've seen! Thanks for sharing! As a designer, I actually recommend that my clients find a printer before I start designing. In my experience, different printers like their print files formatted in different ways, so it's nice to start working with their formatting in mind. The choice in paper weight and book binding can also affect the file formatting so I also recommend nailing that down before working with a designer. Local printers are some of the kindest people and love talking about what they do, so don't be afraid to reach out and meet with them! They are also a great resource to walk you through the different paper weights and finishes available and how they affect cost. When it comes to printing, the physical experience is SO important so I definitely recommend splurging for the nice stuff.

    Thank you so much!! And yes that makes a lot of sense! I had to go back and fourth with my graphic designer because the format was wrong. So that's a very good advice :)

    Haha amazing! I was just going to chime in with my perspective as a designer. Fun to see this comment first. Totally agree with that! A good local printer is a make or break step of the process in my opinion. I have a huge appreciation for the work they do to get a quality product in hands with the best possible colours given the files. And yeah, they’ll often go out of their way to make sure you’re on the same page. I once had an amazing experience sitting down with some of the technical staff and had them calibrate my display to their press sheets so when I was doing all that colour work on my side, I knew the colours I was seeing were going to show up on the proofs and in the book. Ah, love books! Would love to design another.

    This is amazing, Kam - thank you for showing us the detail in creating your Zine. I have looked at Blurb as an option to create a personal photo book on family. The process (different types of paper, size selections, textures etc) can be daunting, but I think it's worthwhile to pursue. I appreciate what you've done here, and hope my final book comes out as well as yours. All the best!

    Good job. Thanks for the video, it’s very inspiring. Just as a piece of advice, it’s just my opinion but I think working a little bit more on the copy/text/story will bring a lot more value and life to your work. For instance, I believe « 30 days in a destination »sounds like the most impersonal thing yo me. I would rather look at a magazine with words that describe or suggest a little more from your feelings and interpretation of the world. Not hating, just saying. I appreciate your work, keep going !

  • @KamVachon

    @KamVachon

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you Eric! I agree with what you said, but the reason I decided to name it 30 days in Mexico was because the photos in this zine are my first look into Mexico, it's nothing deep or incredibly personal and therefore I wanted the title to be true to that. Another ''deeper'' title could of suggested a second meaning to the story, when in reality it's all super simple. :)
