How To Make A Leather Cowboy Holster And Belt
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I've been paying Red Dead Redemption 2 for a few weeks, and no need to say that I love the game. So it was just a matter of time before I try and make something inspired by the game. This week, I decided to finally get to it and make Arthur Morgan's leather holsters.
I used 2.4mm/6oz vegetable tanned leather, dyed it brown with alcohol based leather dye and applied two coats of neatsfoot oil . I really like how it turned out, and I hope you'll like the build.
If you have any question, leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them all. Till next week, keep making and thanks for watching!

That is just gorgeous man. With all those layers the gun belt and holsters must have used up most of a double shoulder by themselves! Well done, and I appreciate the close look at how!

Good Stuff!! Much appreciated. I grew up around a Leather Shop specializing in Saddlery. They made holsters and knife sheaths as well as an accessory on Saddles and Personal..., I recall one of their Apprentices stating when asked about a certain feature on a Saddle how the Owners stepped in, beginning the Customer's conversation with: "He's just a Novice..., he's only had 20-years training in Saddlery..., can I help you"!? At first I thought he was being rude but the "Novice" quickly agreed with the Owner stating: "I make Saddles but I'm still learning and have to be Supervised". (Yes, because one slip-up and you just Bought That Saddle)!! Leather seems to have "Instant Memory" while us humans take years...,

I'm more than slightly late to the party but I think this video has given me the motivation to turn my idea of making my own gunbelt and holsters into reality. I'm giving serious consideration to trying out cowboy action shooting and figured my period correct costume should be based on the outfit I chose to play through the entirety of RDR2 wearing.

I really enjoyed the video, very nice workmanship and probably more traditional than most.. However I have a few issues.. and bnb I can overlook them.. but 45ACP rounds, and the guns too big for the holster.. and I love to see it laid out complete and not rolled up..

Thank a lot! I used the rounds I had and the guns are toys. The holster are not my design but exactly like the ones in the game, so...but thanks :)
I know this is an older vid but I just found you. Just a tip, before you wrap your guns, tape a wooden dowel rode on top of the barrel. That’s so when you form the holster you will leave a path for the front site when it is drawn.

Your work is magnificent! I've watched videos of holsters but made with many tools and resources. Your work has much more value, because it is done manually. I collect replicas of pistols and revolvers and also make holsters for them. I don't have specific tools for the job and I often improvise. Yesterday I made a holster for my Remington 1875 and a rustic wooden frame to put it on. Congratulations for your work.

@RedSmith

Thanks a lot! the best way to make a pattern is to use cardboard. Make it a little bit bigger as the leather shrinks down a bit when it dries. And most importantly, have fun :)

Next time you do something like this ry using alcohol instead of water, it works just as well and you need not worry about rust, just remember to oile the leather after it drys. The alcohol will remove some of the oils from the leather
@RedSmith
4 жыл бұрын
All the years I've been working with leather, I've never heard of wet shaping with alcohol. Sounds smelly and dangerous.
@filianablanxart8305

It is a thing, and there is occasional written reference . The advantage is the gun can be put directly in without a protective layer of plastic . Works best when the holster already pretty much fits, and you are going on detail molding . The classic example is for factory made holster, to then get exact. "Wet Molding " .
Meu Deus que coisa linda, quanto custa um desse ?
@RedSmith

So both holsters are right hand draw? I keep going back and looking. So one is for cross draw and the other for right hip draw. Not seen that set up before....

The only critique I have, is that you used 9mm luger rounds for a semi-auto pistol and not .38 cal or .357 mag revolver rounds. But that aside, awesome work, I'm looking forward to making a .22 cal version for my father-in-law.
@RedSmith
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. Yeah, it's because the guns are toys for my kids and I used the rounds I had in the house at that time :)
@bariumprof

Per saami spec, a 9mm case is .001" larger than 357 & 38, so it'll work for all.

Can you please tell me where you got the guns. Are they real or just good replicas?
