How to Make a Fabric Covered Black Out Shade + Our Guest Cottage Bedroom Reveal!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
One of my most favourite DIYs ever is covering black out shades / blinds with fabric! It's such an easy way to make a practical window covering look so much prettier. Now that it's summertime, kids (and adults!) need their rooms darker to sleep, so here's a fab DIY solution. I'm also giving you a little peek into one of our most recent projects - turning our old "garage house" into a cute little guest house for our summer guests.

Thank you! I had this idea but I wasn't sure if it would mess up the rolling system. I'm going to make one for a photo backdrop!

What a great idea! And you did such s great job explaining and demonstrating! One question? Did you use a LOW MELT glue gun and sticks or a HIGH/HOT melt one please??? 🙏💕🥰👍😊

That's hot glue, but I also had great success with this method using a spray adhesive: thediymommy.com/make-a-no-sew-fabric-covered-roller-shade/#mv-creation-21-jtr
Who would give this a thumbs down?? It’s so easy and straight forward! Thanks!

You are so welcome!!!
Such a pretty room, you did a great job making it look welcoming. Have you found this gluing method durable? Is the glue still holding now? I've always sewn my blinds in the past as where I live gets extremely hot for v long periods & our UV levels are high all year round, I'd love a shortcut, but I'm concerned that the glue would just re-melt in the sunlight. Regards.

Joanne Carroll try hot glue and some spot gluing with E6000
I had a blinds company come to my house and quote me $300 a window. Your tip will save me a small fortune! Thanks!

Creative.
What an ADORABLE guesthouse!!! I love this idea!!! Just wondering if the glue has ever become "re-heated" with the heat from the sun? I live in California and I have a sunroom which faces west and I'm not sure this would hold up... maybe I could modify it using fabric glue??? Thanks for sharing!!! ❤

Thank you! I haven't had that problem in our south facing windows, but I've also used spray fabric glue for these and it works too!
I was picturing having to work with spray glue-so glad to see it’s not necessary! Thanks for the tutorial! Hoping to get my boys’ room looking better for less.

I just did this with quilting fabric, and the shades curl up at the bottom a little when they are in the up position. I can deal with it because they are behind sheer curtains, but this is why you need to use heavy decorator fabric.
Great Vid. So, you do not have to glue the mane part of the shade, but just top, bottom and sides? Thanks Jo Ann
I was wondering how you do this if you have a very wide blind and need multiple strips of fabric to cover the length of the blind? I wondered about spraying an adhesive on either the fabric or the blind and laying it on that way?
Can you use a curtain cut to size or will that be too heavy?
Hi where do I buy the blind (uk)?
This is way easier than making Roman shades. ❤
What about using spray adhesive to attach the fabric? It would stay smooth. I'm going to try it. Also I wonder how contact paper would work? Maybe even just stencil a design. Possibilities!

Great ideas! Let me know how it goes for you!
Great Video... turned out so Beautiful... This video came to me at the right time, I'm getting ready to "FLIP" another RV, and replacing the curtains is going to cost me from $160. to $200. (and that is cheap cafe curtains!!!)... This is such a great idea... LOVE IT... Question: How are the blinds holding up now, since it's been a few years since this video? Thank you for sharing this (beautiful) video... Happy Happy Happy

I've had no issues :) I also have a tutorial for cafe curtains here: thediymommy.com/how-to-sew-diy-cafe-curtains-tutorial/
My roller blinds are looking quite old and tatty so basically I just glue a chosen fabric onto the actual old blind and hang it up?!
Can you use a shower curtain
So pretty!
Don't know if this has been mentioned, but make sure you're NOT using low temp. glue or it might just come loose!
I LOVE the black and white colors! Where did you buy the black out shade? Home Depot? Or any store like that? I'll have to give that idea a try! :)

Terrific idea. To give it a emf upgrade if you are near cell towers sandwich Mylar emergency blanket sheet in this. Will block 95 percent emf from outside your home coming in. Don’t forget to turn off your wifi inside the house! 😉
I imagine I can use some type of plastic paper or something else then cloth? I’m extremely allergic n don’t want anything that will trap dust… Any ideas. I’m moving in to my moms 1 bdrm apt to help her she’s elderly n she has a blackout roller shade n a curtain ontop. I’m removing the curtain n would like to somehow change the shade (off white) look to something pretty without having the cost of replacing them. Extreme budget here…
So u don't have to unroll all of the shade?
Wow - Thank You for sharing your AMAZING IDEA ! I need to need to cover 6 windows in our new AIRBNB without breaking the bank, and YOU just made that possible ! Love it. :-}
