This is an amazing video. I've been sewing for years and didn't know the window grate could be removed. Never even thought of trying. Many thanks Renee, from one seamstress to another.

Wouldn't it be easier if you get the measurements and make your own compass and make a half of the circle. Thats how I got a perfect fit on my window. Thank you for showing us how to make this type of curtains.

Thank you again for your helpful suggestions. I will definitely try a framing shop first and keep my fingers crossed. I really appreciate your rapid response and will keep you posted on how it goes.

Just what I was looking for today. I knew I could make them somehow, but hadn't thought of the matt. I have used thick insulation board before to block off windows and decorated that with fabric or paint, but have never done the arched window. I would rather do with insulation board to keep energy costs down, but don't think the guys at Home Depot would be able to cut my arch from the board. They were kind enough to cut the dimensions of my windows that were rectangular on their machine, so those were easy. I love this idea!

John Forrester, These are working out GREAT for me! It blocks a lot of the heat - not all of it- but I notice the rooms are cooler than they used to be. Maybe a plastic corrugated board would do a better job at insulating (due to the air chamber between the panels) but I needed something super thin to fit behind my wood window mullion frames. I think the the plastic corrugated board is worth a try if you have the depth for it. It's just as easy to cut too. Let me know how it goes! All the best, Renee

We have this window above the master bathroom. When our neighbor gets up in the night, we are awakened by her light. I saw this video and thought I’d give it a try....we slept through the night without light interruptions 😃 Thank you for a great video.

Loved what you’ve done!! Tornado victim (March 26,2021 Georgia) and the WORST window to get replaced. Totally agree with you on the “fan” and that’s when I find you, how to make my own window cover. Lost every tree and that morning sun is blinding. Right now we’ve cut out bubble-foil to cover ..since it is tempered am wondering if I could just cover the foil as it’s all cut to fit.. now just choose a fabric..

Thanks for this. The top of my son's window is not a perfect half circle, but rather it has straight sides and an oblong arch. I knew there had to be a way to cover it. I was trying to think how to build a frame for cloth. This looks much easier 😅 It is quite large, but I saw the suggestions for a frame shop!

Hi Beauty by Nature, You're very welcome! I've recently come across some metallic wallpapers (subtley light reflecting) that look like gorgeos silk fabric. You may find something like that a little more glamorous than adhering fabric to the carboard instead. Your local Sherwin Williams store should have a nice variety of Metallic books to choose from. You can glue them on with spay glue as well. I hope this helps!! All the best, Renee

What do you do if your inside window does not have a grate or tabs to hold board to window?

Where can I find large pieces of mat board? I have a half circle window that's 71" across and 35" tall.

I get the setting sun in my master. Do you thing the spray adhesive will withstand the direct sunlight that is will get?

Any suggestion for a window that does not have the grate like yours does? How would you suggest keeping it up there?

I would use a hot glue gun just to keep it in place. Literally just a few dabs onto the window edges. Don't worry - the glue will scrape off if/when you don"t need the shade anymore. Just wait for the sun to stop shining on it or for a cool day. Thanks for the great question! Renee

Renee Romeo - We dot have grate either. We prefer not to use any adhesive material like hot gun or double sided tape on the glass window. I am worried that once we remove the blind, the marks on the glass will look bad. Do you have any other suggestion which acts like grate and hold the blind in place?

I have an 8' wide window-4' radius arch. any ideas ? Also, no grate ??

Yes! The difficulty will be finding a piece of sturdy cardboard that large. In your case, you can choose a thicker piece because you don't have a grate to place it behind. Once you do, cut it an inch taller than the opening. You can then cover it like I did and simply lean it against the window. If you need to secure it from falling over (due to drafts), just put a dab or two of hot glue on the edge and glue it directly to the window frame. It will come off easily if you ever need to remove it. Thanks for the great question! All the best, Renee

My home is tan on the outside, and when I put my butcher paper up there to get a pattern, I went outside and it gave a nice toned effect, so I attached it to the board facing outside. It looks fantastic lol

My window is about 55" wide and I'm not finding mat boards that big. Any ideas for a substitute? Thanks!

Renee Romeo Hi Renee, Actually our Michaels doesn’t have double sided mat board and nothing in the size of the one in your tutorial. I went online and everything I found was mat board, suited for framing art and photos in smaller sizes. Do you think using 1/4” foam board would work. I could paint one side black and proceed per the tutorial. I don’t know what other material would be thinner and work better. If you have a link to a source for the mat board in a larger size, please let me know. A search on Hobby Lobby didn’t produce any results either. I am at a loss. Thanks so much.

@@patriciastark25 If you have a framing store in your area, that would be the best bet. They can sell you a piece. This IS mat board for framing art and photos (I wouldn't exactly call it double sided) but a piece of 1/4 foam board would be a good second choice - assuming that it's not too thick or your installation. FYI - foam is a bit harder to cut though. I hope this helps! Renee

I got the corrugated plastic (like for realtor signs or teenager spirit from their school). But I couldn't make a template by myself, so I may have wasted it.

​@@Chorkymom You can try to cut a piece of 1/8 inch luan mahogany the size that you need for your project. It's available in 4 x 8 foot sheets at your local home improvement store. Just be sure you secure it with heavy duty glue or nails to your window frame, as you don't want something that large falling. I hope this helps your situation. Renee

I know this video is kinda old so there’s a chance you won’t see this comment, but would you mind sharing where you got the double-sided black and white matboard? 😬 I can’t seem to find one that’s black and white on both sides and the one you use is perfect! 😩 The craft stores I have near me are Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and JoAnn’s. Hopefully you got yours from there? 😅😂 Thanks for this video btw! It’s exactly what I was looking for! Currently trying to do this on two of our arch windows!

Hi Maurice, You can buy mat board at an art supply store or Michaels. It's the stuff they use around pictures for framing. It comes in various sizes, depending upon how large your circle top is. If you can't find it in those places, try calling a framing shop and see if they will sell it to you. All the best, Renee

Hi Isa, Excellent point! The reason why I face it with black is so that it appears to blend with the other windows when you view them from outside. You can see this in the video photo on my website here: reneeromeo.com/2018/06/08/diy-blackout-arch-window-shade/ The windows on top are covered and the windows on the bottom are not. It makes for a seamless appearance on the outside of your home. The indoor facing fabric can help with some heat insulation but honestly I haven't felt a great deal of heat on the inside of the circle top since doing this. It's helping to block the sun and the room stays so much cooler. If you're concerned about using black, you can always use white but your neighbors will be able to notice that something is in the window. I think this all all just preference. Great question, Renee

Never thought of doing that when I lived there... I would put some old pillows in the windows to block out the sun! haha. definitely a good idea

Has anyone been able to accomplish this on their own? My arch is almost twice as wide.

Actually, I think the fabric used is kind of dark! It would’ve been fun to use something more like the design on your blouse. I am going to use your idea for two 1/4 round windows next to each other and use a light filtering solar shade fabric on plexiglass so I get filtered light!

you could have just used your grates to make the arch. Mark the ends, find center point at bottom and use a pencil and string to draw the arch.

Not all arch windows have that wood grate you have. So this is not practical for all arch windows.

Faith Houses, Some of my viewers got creative and used small dabs of high heat hot glue or tiny nails to get theirs to stay put on the window frames. It just depends what your window material is. I hope this helps! All the best, Renee

Rene thanks for the tip. I have a huge window I call wagon wheel that is so bought in the afternoon that it’s hit an annoying. I like the stars at night but was looking to do a temporary cover to give me a break. Also, don’t have removable grates. I am going to tweak your technique and try it. Not sure it will look good from outside. Also for me the purpose of having nice window shapes like that is also to have as much light as possible inside the room, so blocking it permanently does not sounds like a good plan. And I am not even talking about the day you'll be willing to remove that glue...But everyone is different. I see a lot of tenants living all day with shades down, in the dark, very weird people to me. (vampires maybe ?, lol)

Lau Rent, I'm sorry that you misunderstood my process. First, many attic windows on new construction homes are not windows at all. They're merely black laminated cut outs to mimic windows (a picture, if you will) so you can't tell the difference between a real window and a picture of one. Mine look identical to real windows from the street (minus the decorative grates). I have 28 circle top widows in my home. I have them in my public spaces as well as my private spaces. I only treated the private spaces. I wanted to block sunlight in case my guests or I want to sleep late. I can guess that people who work the night shift or people that have neighbors too close by would need this for light control and/or privacy. And, I didn't glue this shade to the window or window frame. I merely glued trim to the edge of the fabric/cardboard so that it blocks light penetration around the edges and they're easily removable. The decorative grates keep the shade firmly in place. I hope this helps clear things up. I'm a lover of sunshine too! Renee

Ok, awesome idea. However, you need the blinds to match the upper material in some way, the white shades look horrendous with classy circle top “shades”.

Is the hot glue removable?

Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out. Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
