How to Make a Dollar Tree Strawberry Tower | Grow Strawberries Vertically in a DIY Stackable Planter

Ойын-сауық

I made DIY Dollar Tree Strawberry Towers so that I could grow strawberries in my small space container gardening yard. They were super easy and cheap, but not perfect. This video has some of the pros, cons, and a how-to component for how to use these successfully.

I purchased a simple wood burning tool several years ago that I use for putting holes in all my plastic pots. You won't crack the plastic as you are just melting a hole through the pot. You need only purchase the tool not the entire kit and Amazon sells one for 12.99 which will last for years . Though I also have 3 Green Stock vertical planters I enjoy my dollar tree ones for herbs, strawberries and flowers like marigolds. I don't allow runners to develop on the strawberries and I put the planters in the garage for the winter in our zone 4 so I can water them lightly if the soil is drying out. We get a fair amount of wind at times but I have never had them blow over as I top with a nice size rock and only stack them three or four high. Also purchased an extra GS base so I can move them around easily on the deck and turn them daily to equalize the amount of sun they receive on all sides.

You can heat up a nail held in pliers and melt a hole, easy peasy.👍🏻

Very solid review! I just started buying these a few days ago when I ran into these by chance recently in my local dollar store.

Or spend a few bucks on a small soldering iron. I paid $5 for one ten years ago, and it's still going strong.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve seen this in several videos. If you drill backwards, you will have less cracking. (Like you are backing the bit out of a hole.)

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, the ones where I only used one hand since I was holding my phone filming definitely cracked more and the ones with two hands were gentler and less cracking even without reversing the drill.

I just picked some of these up at my local $ store. Think I may grab some Matte clear acrylic spray and put a coat of that on the exterior of each so maybe they won't break down so quickly. Thinking bush beans over strawberries... Love this video, thank you.

Put masking tape over the holes and drill through a few at a time to prevent the cracks due to the grill and to do the job more quickly

What if you wrapped the tower pots in tin foil? It would stop uv rays from deteriorating the plastic, deflect heat keeping the roots cooler, and maybe increase light to the greenery of the pot near it . Just a thought.

If they’re from the Dollar Tree, does that mean each one costs a dollar? (Sorry if that’s a dumb question but I haven’t been to that store in decades.)

I’m in upstate NY. This is the first year I’ll be using a grow tower for my strawberries. They’re in a raised bed now and they’re looking good. I’ll probably put the towers on our screened in porch in the winter for a little protection while they lay dormant.
