Went to the dollar store one day for soda but saw that the manager wanted to get rid of the leftover seed packets (around a hundred or so ranging in vegetables mostly but some flowers) I decided to buy two packets of carrots but she wanted the seeds gone so bad that she gave me all of the packets for free. What would have costed me maybe $5 to $10 all together costed me $0. She was extremely nice but was tired of no one buying the seeds so I got so many packets of carrots and radishes along with chives, oregano, parsley, bush beans, peas and watermelon.

Another tip for cheaperish gardening that I do. I reuse nursery pots for my plants. I.e. I buy a plant repot it into a bigger pot and then replant my seedlings into the empty pot and so on. I got the idea from hermit crabs. They form a que line and switch out shells with each other. Biggest to smallest. I also crowd garden my pots.

I have purchased the “dollar tree” seeds. I have waited until the end of the season when they have been 70-80% off. So literally pennies a package. Used them the next season with no problem. They are not fancy varieties- BUT they are usually tried and true varieties that are widely sold by bigger seed companies for a lot more $. Well worth picking up. I have bought a similar planter from Aldi’s.

I resuse my containers from the plants I purchase. The shrubbery containers are nice and large. They are great for greens, peppers, okra, carrots etc. The pot doesn't need to be fancy as long as it can grow your food.

Rubbermaid type plastic bins also work well, if you drill holes in them. I get mine cheap from a local thrift store. Not quite as cute, but they do the job! The flexible/rubbery feeling ones seem to last much longer (years) than the shiny, smooth kind (breaks down in one season of sunlight).

Dollar Tree has a variety of multi-purpose containers, and I scooped up a bunch. They make terrific hanging planters, and the store also had some colored thick twine. The plastic is thin enough that I can make four holes, or two, if the planter already has two molded handles. Through these I put my twine (rope) and make a four legged suspension hanger. I also poke holes around the bottom edge for drainage. I have had problems with bugs eating the shoots when I plant in the ground, so this has kept the bugs off. I also spray with very diluted dish detergent and use diatomacious earth sprinkled in them. The hanging planters allow me to not have to bend over for watering or planting new seeds. They are at eye view, and for people with mobility problems, this is ideal. Suspension height can be adjusted, plants can be moved, and someone in a wheelchair can garden in them easily. I use my sturdy trees and fence posts for hanging. But I am going to run a thick wire/cable between two trees so I can hang a whole line of them. They are somewhat heavy, so any line must be able to handle the weight. For soil, I dig around the base of bushes and trees that have shed their leaves over the years, and the dirt is fantastic. I don't have to buy soil.

My Dollar tree doesn't have the best selection. It's not very big. Seems like everything is more than a dollar too lol. This video is a few years old so that could be part of the problem. But thanks I enjoyed your video! You're doing great girl! Keep it up. I'm proud of you and I wish my children and grandchildren would be more interested in planting flowers and food. In this day we need to grow what we can for food. I told my oldest son this spring that we need to grow a victory garden. He just said NOPE. Bummer because I've been forced to live in a tiny apartment and it's too far away for me to go take care of plants more than once a week. I'm afraid things would die like everything else I've planted there in the past. LORD make a way! 🙏

I buy the 8 packs on clearance at Lowe’s, take two plants out, repot together in a larger pot and get 4 good sized plants after some miracle grow and a few weeks. I make my container gardens with them and add some perennials from my own garden. This way I don’t spend too much and have bigger plants for the money.

You will see 'farmers & homesteaders' using the aluminum tubs to 'water' their animals and carrying various resources around their properties. When I was younger, the older rural generation used BIGGER ones to bathe their kids and themselves in. They used to make 'mop bucket' sized ones once upon a time as well. Many different types of 'aluminum' buckets are in use now, as previously stated, farmers have ones specifically made for storing RAW milk and you will see them use your bucket (mop size) to catch the milk as they 'milk' their cows and then transfer it to the ones made for storage.

I have found ( in the garden stuff ) the majority of the items either work better and / or last longer than the big name brand stores as well. P.S. at 7:38 I bought 4 of those for my Herb garden and those are well worth the money for sure. I love the hands off self watering reservoir. I only have to fill it maybe once a week depending on how dry it is throughout that week.

In previous years they had leftover seeds, but lately there seems to be a gardening mania, probably because of Covid, so the DT stores in my area sell out very quickly. If I see gardening supplies I grab them quickly. Their seeds have done very well for me and in one pkt of Beefsteak tomatoes I counted 76 seeds! My tip for finding loads of free pots from seedling size to huge I visit the dumpsters after landscaping companies finish with a new home or commercial property...jackpot!

Hi Ashley, I watched your video last year and was so excited to start, but it was too late in the season. This year you inspired me to head to Dollar Tree and get all my seeds and supplies early! Seeing all of your fresh and beautiful veggies in your video motivated me to start several things from seed, and the other day, I harvested my first lettuce ever and I couldn’t believe I didn’t kill it 🤣. My family really enjoyed fresh salad from our own garden. Regarding those peat pots, I do remove the biodegradable container because it does take a long time to break down. I understand at least to remove the top part, otherwise it will wick water up from the plant itself. It was so thoughtful to make a planter for your mom 😍. Thank you so much for the clear explanation and demo! Loved the soothing music, too!

Love your presentation. Down to earth, easy to understand and on my kind of budget. Thanks! Trying to keep organic can be challenging, I use solutions of peroxide and water, rubbing alcohol and water and neem oil. Cheaper, healthier and does a decent job.

Go shop on line Aliexpress. That's where all this stuff comes from. You must start early ordering it comes shipped out of China like everything else. Also garage sales, thrift stores Goodwill Outlet is the best. Also Mushroom compost and make your own compost in a trashcan. Go to land sapping places ask if they sell lose grading dirt if you brig your own tub incase you do not have a truck. Those Dollar stores ad up not much in the bag. Grow In bags as well. Get creative. ...

In the metal (galvanized steel) bucket/bin... make sure you have drainage holes either drilled or punched in the bottom, so your plants roots don't drown. Your potager looks beautiful and lush... great starts! :)

There is a garden center not far from me where they had a bin of sligtly damaged pots but still usable and carriers that were FREE! Got a lot of them for a couple of years like that. Also, i reuse sour cream containers and cut down 2 liter soda bottles (drink a lot of soda!)

WHAT A CUTIE ! LOVELY GIRL. I SAW THOSE 3 - POT STACKING PLANTER UNITS AT ONE OF OUR DOLLAR TREE STORES. A FEW DAYS LATER, THEY WERE COMPLETELY WIPED OUT ! NOT A ONE LEFT ! I EVEN WENT TO THEIR WEBSITE IN DESPERATION & COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING LIKE THEM, ARGH ! I WAS SO FRUSTRATED ! WISH I HAD GRABBED THEM WHEN THEY WERE THERE ! A LESSON LEARNED, HOPEFULLY.

You can use a really long eyebolt, some washers, and nuts to create a hanging center rod for three of them stacked up. I hope that makes sense. I saw the idea on Amazon when I was looking for a similar kind of planter. You would just need to drill a hole through the center portion of each planter and secure the bottom one with washers and nuts onto the eyebolt.

Very good presentation, I paid $4 for a doggone eggplant last year at Ace. This year I grew from seeds and I have 12 for the price of a pack of seeds. I usually grow from seed but got too busy but never again will I buy seedlings.
