I just wanted to tell you that your video really inspired me. I used to be an avid gardener until I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am very happy to say that I'm in remission now. Depression seemed to get the best of me, and I started looking for videos on container gardening. I feel so blessed that I found yours. So may God bless and prosper you in all that you do.

Last summer, I grew summer squash/zucchini in 7-gal grow bags. It started out great but in mid summer it was like the potting mix was depleted of organic material and never really produced well. I tried fertilizer and lime but large vegetables are more suitable for in-ground planting. Tomato plants did OK in the same grow bags and soil. I also grow hot peppers in 3-gal grow bags, and those plants produce like crazy.

Those Smart Pots are pretty sweet, Kim, and I'm happy to see you promoting container gardening. It's such a great way for everyone to grow their own food whether you have a huge yard or tiny balcony. It's also great for people with limited mobility or those who can't physically maintain in-ground or raised bed gardens . Your garden is beautiful. I've been growing in Earthboxes, whiskey barrels and 5-gallon buckets for years with great success. After seeing this I may need to add Smart Pots to my collection. :)

I found that putting wood chips in the bottom 1/3 of bags keeps excess water away from soil, retains water for dryer days, gives air to roots if they get that long, and since wood chips are free... less cost since less purchased potting soil is required. FYI Baby worms do find their way into bags if left on ground, which is also a benefit. I also throw in some kitchen scraps in the wood chip layer because it will decompose without requiring it to sit somewhere else first.

TX Kim. I live in the deep Mojave Desert in SoCal. Out here I find growing in pots is necessary, but a BIG challenge because the pot gets too hot in the 110o+ air temps even in the shade and fries the roots. This year I experimented with wrapping a towel around the pot to completely shade it like a turban! I can also wet the towel to cool it like an evaporative swamp cooler if necessary in the extreme heat. IT WORKED!! Thought I'd share what I learned. We're all surviving here! :))

Love your videos! Last year I only grew tomatoes and bush beans, for some reason the zucchini didn't take. This year I am adding eggplant and sugar baby watermelon hope I have some luck! I also use the soft pots. I'm also going to start sweet potatoes for the first time in pots, lol, fingers crossed on that one. :)

Thank you so much. I have planted tomatoes and cucumbers in containers already but I wasn't sure about watermelon. Now all I need is to find that brand.

Your garden looks great. I wish that I could the same but I can't since I'm in a wheelchair. I do have lots of veggies and some fruits. I also have 2 avocado. I just ask my family to get them for me. Great video.

Thank you for the video. I plant in found pots, reuse my old potting soil and make my own fertilizer. It works great for me.

Hello Kim, thanks for a great video. Air pruning happens in these containers because when the root hits the side of the fabric, it dries and dies off instead of turning around and forming a ball like in plastic containers. This promotes the constant production of healthier roots instead of choking the container. Cheers

If you grow any trees in containers then what you say is even more true. In plastic containers the roots will circle around. This is called girdleling. But with a fabric/air container the roots will end and then put out lateral fibrous roots, that will enable the tree to take in all the nutrients and water needed just so long as the soil gets enough rainfall or supplemental watering.
