    I'm having a hard time growing my 2 tomato plants and now also the 2 wax pepper plants. 1 Roma tomato plant is in top soil (not sifted) with a little acid or acidic soil my Aunt gave me because I live on the side of the mountain in California. It's producing tomatoes but the plant hasn't grown. The other tomato plant is in a styrafoam cooler its showing its producing roma tomatoes, but the plant isn't growing. And is in some acid/ acidic soil with sifted top soil. And the 2 wax pepper plants are in a raised garden box bed I tried making with what I could try to make it with as I don't have the money to do anything special. I have had them for awhile and they aren't growing. I have 2 other Roma & Cherry Tomato plants planted in by seed and in just regular top soil, They are in a dryer drum and are growing. I can't afford to just go out and buy the big stuff to help it. I try to do with what I have to be able to grow these items. Anyone can help? I stopped over watering them, and watering them as CaliKim has mentioned. I just have no idea what else I can do. Thanks if you can help. wish I could share the pics.

    Hi Darryl, way to go for it! Vegetable gardening definitely can be done on a budget - and I love how you're repurposing what you have for growing containers. Make sure any container you're planting in has holes in the bottom for drainage, or the plant won't grow, and roots will probably rot - perhaps this is the issue? Also, topsoil has very little nutrients in it, is often heavy and the roots can't breathe. Tomatoes are hungry plants and need some food to grow. I suggest picking up a bag of organic compost and some organic granular fertilizer at your local garden center to mix into your topsoil. If you can afford a bottle of Fish Fertilizer, go for it! It's highly concentrated and the nutrients will be immediately available to your plants and will give them a burst of growth. These amendments are all fairly inexpensive and a little goes a long way. Watch my container tomato videos for more tips - and thanks for hitting the thumbs up button on our videos and subscribing if you haven't already!

    I love seeing how pretty a back yard can be with flowers interspersed the way you've done them! This is my first year intentionally planting flowers. I started Zinnias and Marigolds and so far just the Marigolds are in bloom. I can't wait for the Zinnias! The prior owners planted daffodils and Irises (which have finished blooming) and I have my green onion white pom pom flower heads and purple Comfrey blooms and of course dandelions and lots of pretty large maroon Perilla (Shiso) Leaves good for a salad garden and very prolific - almost like mint and VERY good for us. I love them marinated in soy sauce and placed over As far as the pulley system goes for trellising the tomatoes, this is just a thought, but I bet you could do a DIY version just using a cup hook attached to the top horizontal board of your wood trellis and about 3 extra feet of string with at least one or two loops tied into three extra feet of the string that you could keep coiled up at the top or hang the loops from the hook. Then when you wanted to harvest your tomatoes or lower the string for another reason, just remove the loops from the hook to slowly lower the top of the vine up to an extra three feet (or whatever extra length you made it). For that matter, you could probably do it without hooks and instead just wrap the coil of extra string/line/cord to the top of the trellis using the right kind of knots.

    Love your gardening changes. You have inspired me to try and continue planting throughout the growing season here in Central Ohio. With only perhaps a 5-6 months of warm(ish) growing season, learning what works here for a short harvest is a challenge, but definitely up to it. And wish I could grow citrus outside year round, like I saw on the lemon tree in your garden.

  • @CaliKim29
    @CaliKim2922 сағат бұрын

    Hi Deb - glad to provide some inspo for your garden - keep at it! The key with a short growing season is to start from seed indoors and grow varieties that are smaller (perhaps in containers) with shorter maturity dates so you can fit your harvests in before the weather changes. Many of the varieties in our Container Garden Seed Collection or Late Summer Collection would work well for you and are currently 30% off w/ code "JUNEGARDEN" at calikimgardenandhome.com. Have you ever considered a dwarf citrus in a container then moving in to an indoor sunny window in winter to keep it alive? Might be a good option...Let me know how your garden grows this summer!

    I just got inside from sprying Spinosad. I had to remove four develop[ing tomatoes for bug damage-cut worms. Overall, the tomato plants are doing very well. They are loaded with fruit and still flowering. Some of the plants are huge! I have one Sugar Baby watervelon with a vine at least ten feet long, and it has a watermelon developing on it. The Hearts of Gold cantaloupe are covered with flowers. I saw ppaches of squash bug eggs and one squash bug. They've been soaked with Spinosad. I sprayed the cucumbers too to protect them from the Florida pickleworm moth. I just harvested cucumbers and squash, and have more to harvest tomorrow. The pole beans are climbing and will be flowering soon. My pepper plants are loaded with peppers. The mustard is starting to bolt, so I have to harvest it out. Tomorrow, I have to spray Immunox on my trees, cucumbrs, and squash. Cedar Gall Rust is bad in my area, and it is time for powdery mildew to infest the plants. The first Japanese Beetles of the season have arrived. They got doused with spinosad too. The ground cherries have begun droping fruit. I'm disapointed with them. I get a lot more satisfaction from my porch tomatoes, which I've begun to pick. My Prairie Fire crabapple tree arrived today. I gave it a good soak, and will try to get it in the ground tomorrow. If all goes well, I'll work on planting the peach trees too. My legs are sill in bad shape, the right leg ugly bad, but they have improved. A few of the zinnias and cosmos have started to flower, and seeds are sprouting for Butterfly flower. I have a few carrots that are ready to pick. My potatoe harvest was decent, and I have more chitting for planting thr first week of July. I have enough going on that after I harvest out the mustard, I am going to let that area of rthe raised bed rest, but not for long. In July and August, I'll be doinf seed starts for cauliflower, brocolli, Brunswick Cabbage, and Nappa Cabage. I havent made my plans for the fall garden, but I will be growing carrots, turnips, and Yellow Heart Winter Choy too. I just got Net 2.0, a revisit to the Net Zero universe back from editing. My editor loved it. Here is what Ann Attwood had to say, "This was so good. It was fast-paced and there was so much packed in to a fairly small word count. Good world building. I could picture the events as they unfolded. Not for the faint-hearted!!" The story will make its debut this fall in an anthology, Tales From The Galactic Rim. I need one more story to complete the collection.

    Please stop planting your tomatoes deep. Tomato roots are shallow root growers. Their roots only travel through the top 5 inches of soil. Below that the roots die. What works to increase root mass is to dig a trench about 3 inches deep lay your Tomato down in the trench with the top sticking out at the end of the trench close to the pole, string, or cage in which you wish to train your tomato, in a few days the top will stand up straight. Then, grow like a regular tomato. In the fall, pull up the tomato and look at all the roots growing down the planted stem. To experiment, dig a hole straight down deep and plant the tomato. In the fall, dig up the tomato, and you will see the roots up around the top of the planted stem and beneath it, it will have stem showing with no roots, the ones there when you planted it will have died and disappeared.

    I have a few additional questions . Here is my setup with my questions to follow. I live in Zone 7B. North Alabama. Full sun. I have 1 Indeterminate (Better Boy Plus) in a 25 gallon Smart Cloth Pot (21” Diameter) and 1 Determinate (Bush Goliath) in a 20 Gallon Smart Cloth Pot (19” Diameter, I think) … Both planted with some Miracle Grow Potting Soil, Mushroom Compost, Copper Fungicide, Gypsum, Powdered Bone Meal, Epsom Salt and some good ol’ worm poo castings for fun. I’m not a 100% organic gardener and plan on using Miracle Grow Fertilizer occasionally during my 2 week feedings . I am setting up a micro drip irrigation system with 6” spacing on the drip holes. ( I have 9” hole spacing if needed) I plan on coiling the drip irrigation hose around the base of my tomato plant and continue to coil the drip irrigation hose around the top of the pot to make a spiral pattern with about 4” - 6” between my coiled drip irrigation hose as the spiral forms. First tomato’s ever. Either in ground or in container . I’m using the DIG Irrigation Kit after watching one of your videos My questions. .. 1. How often and for how long should I water ? Especially starting off. Current temp is 83 degrees. I’m guessing 20 minutes every other day starting at about 06:30 or am I way off on this?. 2. As the temperature increases, do I start watering more frequently or simply increase time of watering ? Thanks so much to anyone that can toss me a guideline on micro irrigation.

    Could you please do a video on how to make your yogurt I was wondering is it plant-based? I'm new to gardening and I just love your videos specially showing us how to fill a container.😊

    Hi Lynda, welcome to gardening. The first thing I suggest is that subscribe to my channel, but then click on the down arrow next to the subscribe and make sure "All" has a check mark next to it. This way, you'll see a pop up note on your phone/computer saying that I just posted a new video! (How cool is that?). I haven't done a kitchen style making something video in a quite a while; however, I will keep your request in mind! I"ve responded to your other questions, as well! Hope you subscribe and follow ...if you have not. CaliKim

    I never knew about lemon cucumbers. I only know about vegetables that you see at the grocery store😢

    Hi I was wondering would the lemon cucumbers be good to slice and put into my water? Thank you for the video

    Yes, lemon cucumbers would be an excellent choice to slice and put into your water. They are small, round cucumbers with a bright yellow color and a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Try it and see how YOU like it!! CK

    Thanks for the video! I like how you confidently prune your mint plant. I just planted some in a pot and was being very cautious and precise with pruning. haha. I am vegetarian and make yummy fresh spring rolls that call for chopped mint and cilantro. We also do something similar to what you've shown - ground up mint add to fizzy water with a bit of lemon and honey for a refreshing sparkling drink. Cheers!
