if in vtfedit it says that you cannot replace the file just save it as another name and extract it into the custom portal folder

when i try and launch portal it says that this is probably not what you intended.

same method, just instead of the portal gun texture, do the elevator texture. You can do this with any texture in the game.

thanks for the tutorial! gcfscape doesnt work because of some missing file thats probably in windows 3.1!

So, while I was doing this I got stuck on step 2 since the "Steam" folder wouldn't appear. Both in GCFScape and in my regular files. Where's steam? Where did it go? Who is the steam? What is the steam? Jokes aside, please help im so confused right now

Idk, maybe you saved steam in a different drive? Never heard of this issue.

does this work with cracked portal 1 as well?

When I open it with GCFscape (the file, yes its the right one) it doesn't work. It just comes up with "Root" on the left hand side, nothing else.

Re-downloading GCFscape fixed it

Does the same thing work for portal 2? Just wondering because I don't like the damaged portal gun texture there.

mine just destroyed the texture and now it's a purple and black portal gun

yes, you can retexture about everything if you can find the textures.

I accidently made it so it opens in microsoft internet explorer instead of vtf edit what do I do

You must have chosen for it open in there I guess? Right click on it and chose "open in".

I did everything in the video but the texture is wrapped on the model wrong now and idk why Edit: If anyone else has this issue make sure to double check the image size. Somehow mine went from 1024x1024 to 512x512. It HAS to be 1024x1024

Some problems could be your texture file is the same, and you're just putting it in and you don't know it. Another could be all the files aren't the exact name, in which case you would have to change them because source can be really specific on that stuff.

very loose tutorial, maybe try not to make it so rushed so ppl can follow along easier. your tutorial worked for me, im just providing feedback
