How to Make a Crab Snare: Detailed Description

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For the heavy duty crab snare PM me by clicking on my account, then "about" and "send message". I will get back to you asap. If you make your own, all the material should be very inexpensive and you will have enough material to make at least 10 snares. Everything can be found at home depot. I can put sku numbers if anybody wants them.

    Thanks for 'How To...." video on Crab Shares and I was so happy to see you using the 1/2 in by 1/2 in 19 gauge wire cloth even though you recommend the stronger gauge wire. So many other videos recommend using the 16 gauge 1" by 1/'2" cloth and it's really hard to find that easily available particularly in small rolls. The wire cloth you recommend is easily available in small rolls at Home Depot. You also make the snares very simple and easy to make. Much appreciated and I also enjoy very much your other fishing videos....have learned a lot from them !

    I made this snare to use this weekend. I learned that instead of using the female disconnects, I used 1/16 aluminum ferrules for the snare line. One of the wires from the hardware cloth that is used to connect the 7x3 piece to the rest of the snare broke off, so I used 4 small zipties to connect the piece instead. I also added a 10" trimmer wire to the front of the snare to connect to my main line because I was having issues with the snare wires tangling with my braid. I noticed every time when i brought my snare up to check; the 7x3 bait door was tweaked open left to right. So I added 2 more bike tire bands with jack chain hooks to the sides of the trap to let them cross each other to prevent the snare door from opening. The zipties also help prevent this from happening. I lost 3 crabs on Saturday, on Sunday after I added my improvements; I ended up landing 2.

    Great how to video. Very informative. Cool to make your own stuff. Just a heads up, by the time you buy everything, and the time to make them, it would have been cheaper and easier just to buy them made already. Plus the hardware clothe I bought at Lowe’s seem cheap and not sturdy. So for me, I feel like I wasted $ and time when I could have bought four made snares for $20 bucks. Food for thought if you’re thinking about making them yourself. If you do decide to make them, have fun.

    I just made one myself but I used dupont nylon fishing line. Then I thought of a problem..what if when reeling back it snags against the bottom? I do not want to lose the whole setup I just made. So I decided to use a 12lb line. It retains its line memory so it still forms the loop, and if it snags against the bottom I can pull it until the snagged loop snaps and I dont lose the whole rig. I am still experimenting with the line poundage..going as low as possible but still being able to form a nice loop, and when it singes onto a catch that the line will also not form a crease. Another thing to consider is that some crabs have pretty sharp claws that might slice the line so you need to find a balance between snapping a snagged line easily or durability to sharp claws.

    You have excellent instructional and entertaining videos. These snares are illegal in our waters (Alaska) -- actually, a trap can't have any attachments nor loops whatsoever on the mesh and other restrictions apply also -- that's too bad for me cuz this fishing for crabs method of yours is just brilliant.

  • @FishermansLife

    @FishermansLife

    That's too bad. I didn't know that. I do know that only residents of Alaska can target King Crab. Is that true? Anyway, crab snares are illegal in many different states. Even southern california they are illegal and many east coast states. Too bad because it's such a fun way to get crab and enjoy a day outdoors

  • @bestoutcomes

    @bestoutcomes

    Yes, Matts that's accurate -- Alaska residents only for king crab and other shellfish, as well as harvesting sockeye salmon in large numbers in freshwaters via a large net ... all are known as "personal use" fishing regs which applies for Alaska residents only. Those crab snares are highly effective and so the regs make us have to go to great lengths to harvest any, such as a boat and all of the gear, which is a small fortune and not so easy in our treacherous waters, so I will just have to crab fish virtually through youir great videos, my friend! ... would be much fun to cast out on rod and reel. Thanks for the note, Mac

    Is there a reason why you only have a sinker attached to the back part of the snare and not the front? I am just wondering if it would be better if you tied a sinker on the back with a zip tie and then tie one on the front also with a zip tie as well. This way you would have an even drop when the snare hits the bottom and it could also prevent the snare from ever falling on its back. I would use 1.5 to 2 oz sinkers for both the back and front or maybe use a heavier sinker for the back side. What do you think?

  • @FishermansLife

    @FishermansLife

    good idea i like it. My thinking was to put the weight on the back part of the snare so when it falls through the water that part will sink first and I can reel in a little to even it out before it hits bottom. Your idea seems like it would almost always land bottom down. Would be interesting to see if it had a higher hook up rate

    There's a chance for more snag by carrying a line with a weight dangling on the bottom of the ocean/rock. find yourself some heavy small rocks or metal pieces and put it in the cage together with the bait that way less stuff hanging less chance or getting snagged....
