Seems your ready to move up from rat traps, to catamarans! :-) The world needs more sailing vessels, & fewer jet skies! :-) Wish ya great luck, kid! Haaa subbed

I don't see how it's better than what exists fro other log-rolling traps, but it's certainly an easy and readily-created DIY trap. Thanks!

I really enjoyed watching this video and was impressed by your workmanship and overall design. I have had mice in my kitchen for a number of years and have always used the old Victor mousetraps, which work pretty well, but I like your design better for catching multiple mice. Thanks for sharing!

Boy, what a lot of negative Nellies commenting below. FYI for everybody claiming the pop bottle or can on a wire is a better idea, it doesn't spin as freely as a paint roller. I made mine with scrap wood, a scrap piece of PVC, and a paint roller that was about to go in the trash. I did make two modifications. I drilled a double hole in the end of the roller and an equivalent size hole at the top of the garbage can I'm using. I run a dowel through the roller and out the hole in the can to lock it in place for a few days so rodents learn to trust it. Because I'm after rats I angled the entire trap slightly downwards and added a piece of vinyl flooring to the top so they will have a harder time trying to grab the platform once the PVC starts to spin.

On my version of your idea, the roller was touching the bucket and was unable to spin. Instead of using a back piece, I used zip ties to snug up the apparatus to the bucket (drilling holes in the right spots), and it spun. Thank you for your wonderful idea.

Prove it works by making a video showing the trap in action, and for multiple mouse catches. The paint roller's bail and PVC pipe are far too heavy. Much heavier than mice. It won't roll when the mouse is centered atop, and there is nothing to get the mouse to lean to the side.

Precisely. Nine inches of PVC, functional paint roller, epoxy, fasteners, use of power tools amounts to several dollars, an soda can, wire hanger, pennies. Aknowledging to primacy of low inertia as a design criteria, priceless.

Pretty cool but if you live by a field and invest in a barn owl nest box or build your own, the breeding pair will consume at least 2000 mice in one chick rearing season. Talk about eliminating Lyme disease vectors.

I have 1-1/2 gallon pail I don't use,and figure I would just cut a piece of 1-1/2" pvc pipe with end caps drilled for a rod that can go through the pipe and pail on both sides. A lot less work than using all those 1x3s. You can reuse the pail if you don't mind a couple of holes near the top.

Could I buy one from you? I am having a tough time dealing with mice and you have this perfected down to a science. Yours I think works better than the commercialized log roller style which had to be placed lower in a wider taller bucket or garbage can for it to be effective. The one traditionally marketed is easy for a mouse to sit on top of the bucket to access the bait without jumping on the spinning log. How freely does the PVC roller spin? You could also cut PVC sized holes out of a coffee can and run the length of a PVC pipe right through the holes of that coffee can and through each end of a 5 gallon bucket. Then to tie down with hay wire the ends of the PVC pipe that the coffee can rolls around off of on the outside of it within the bucket to the outside metal handles of bucket on both ends of the bucket to secure the PVC roller pipe in place so it won't push straight out of the holes on each end of the bucket.

Very clever but .... The problem with your solution is that it would be a pain in the butt to tend to, in the winter in northern states. And that is when we get more mouse activity from mice trying to avoid exposure. I just place tomcat mouse traps inside of the Havahart model # 1083 squirrel traps at night and bait them with peanut butter. I caught about 20 mice the first 2 weeks I began doing this. Now I get 1 every few days. I do this so that I wont be killing small birds in the early AM if I wake up late (Many bird species will be attracted to peanut butter.) Then during the day, I remove the mouse traps from inside the 1083 and just use the squirrel trap for its' intended purpose.

I discovered recently that the reason we had stray cats visiting our backyard at night was because we had a mouse infestation outside our suburban home. This should have been obvious but the cats were gone in the early AM so I didn't see them that much. The mice never got into our home And since we have bird feeders, I figured the cats were probably after the birds. I never saw any mice, so the idea of a mouse infestation never occurred to me But after trapping 33 mice outside in less than a month, I now realize I was completely wrong about this. I now realize you have to set mouse traps outdoors if you want to see if you have a mouse problem.

Easy, or not, why I would I want to go to the trouble of replicating this trap without first knowing whether it even works or not? That's what I like about Shawn, the Mouse Trap Monday guy, -- he will not only show you how to build the trap, but he'll also demonstrate how well it works, or doesn't work. I don't have the time, money, or materials to waste. ty

It does work. Im a dedicated follower of Mr. Wood KZread channel but after a few failed attempts of my own I duplicated this trap. First night I used it indoors I caught 4 fat mice. Mice enter my house by way of the over head door gaps on the attached garage. I’m working on this.

Wouldn't a clamp made from a jubilee clip and angle bracket on the roller allow you to achieve hold on the bucket lip and variable bucket thicknesses. Then a ramp on the far side that encourages the mouse 🐁 to jump that small gap onto the roller. Less sacrificial parts, more mouse momentum (try saying that after a few)

You caught 10 mice in your mousetrap? I thought it was a great idea and made one just like. But I have one mouse that moved in my house and he is smart. First I tried conventional mouse traps and set them around some with peanut butter, some with cheese. He wouldn't touch those traps. I built a home made electric mouse trap and he wouldn't step into it, smart. I like diy stuff and built one like you have and even made a nice ramp up to it and left it for a few weeks. He's just too smart. I lived in a house that had a lot of mice about 10 yrs ago and I used dcon poison on them and it did get rid of them all. But I don't want to use that stuff here. I think if you have quite a few mice some are going to be young and dumb, but my one mouse is adult and very smart. You made a great trap, but my mouse it too smart for it. I'm out of ideas. Would you happen to have any other ideas?

It would probably work a little better if the top piece was plywood or something thinner. The mouse will try to walk onto the spinner from the plywood instead of jumping.
