How to Make 3 NEW Half-Rectangle Triangle Quilts - Free Quilting Tutorial

Triple Play is a favorite tradition here at Missouri Star Quilt Co. Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own, unique spin on a favorite block, technique, or template. In this episode, the talented Doan ladies show off three fabulous new quilts made with the half-rectangle triangle quilt block.
Misty's Bejeweled quilt is a bold and modern fat quarter pattern. Her fabric is Gayle Loraine Fat Quarter Bundle by Elizabeth Chappell for Art Gallery Fabrics, and each block is cut and trimmed to perfection with the HuRTy™ 1 - Half Rectangle Triangle Ruler for Latifah Saafir Studios
Natalie's Spinning Squares quilt is an intricate dazzler filled with visual movement. It's a layer cake pattern made with Cheri 10" Stackers +by Lila Tueller for Riley Blake. These pretty blocks are kept in line with the Bloc Loc Half-Rectangle Triangle 2:1 Ruler Large Set and the Bloc Loc 4 1/2" Square Up Ruler.
Jenny's Beaming quilt is a 2-color beauty made with Crush, the Kona Cotton Color of the Year 2023. This pretty layer cake quilt is made with smaller, more intricate pieces, but Jenny keeps it simple with just one basic ruler, the Missouri Star 4.5" x 4.5" Square Ruler.

Jenny, Natalie......you two are looking so good. I was hoping you would make a video and share how you're both loosing weight. I have been watching you for such a long time and it's wonderful to see the transformation. Keep it up ladies.
Natalie's Triple Play projects are always extra creative

Yes, Nat is truly an authentic artist besides being an amazing quilter. She could make museum style art quilts.
Natalie, I’m always amazed at how differently/brilliantly your brain works. After quilting for so long, it’s rare to find a pattern that leaves me wondering how the designer did it. Your patterns are like reading little mini-novels!! I was so excited to see that you’ve started a new video series also! You’re an excellent teacher, but I would love to see you teaching more advanced techniques. And yes, as others have said, you look amazing!!
Natalie seems to like the slightly more wilder style in her quilts...thinking outside the box. I love how each of you start with the same idea yet different results according to everyone's brain as Jennie says

Missy’s seem a Bit complicated ….course, it might just be my brain 😂😂
Lookin’ good Natalie!
I love Triple Play Days. All the quilts are fantastic. What tickled me most was Jenny constantly cleaning and straightening while the other girls worked. Then during her segment, the table was a mess! I just love watching the different personalities and dynamics of the family!
I like the fact the Misty’s quilt could go together quickly if you need a quilt at the last minute. I like all 3 but Misty’s was my favorite this time.
Natalia you look so great. Dont know what you are doing but keep up the good work.
All beautiful quilts made by 3 special lovely ladies. Thank you all 💚💙🩶
Love triple play 3very different ideas 🇦🇺
I love triple play day! Usually I have a favorite but this time I honestly cannot decide which one I must make first. They are all fabulous 🤩.
This is an extra good Triple Play! I like Misty's the best - sometimes I like seeing more of the pretty fabric, like her Simple Stacks pattern does also.
Natalie, you have the most creative mind. Jenny, your way of enlarging the square by adding the white strip on each side turned out fabulous. And Misty, you have us a super Simple design to use for donation quilts which will sew up both quickly and beautifully. Also, Thanks for the intro to the HRTy template by Latifah Saafir.
I love that Natalie has to stop working to talk. Jenny always stop to check the orientation of her pieces and Misty always double check the seam she is sewing. They all have strengths that play off each other ❤
Natalie you look so good! Love you guys!❤
Love, love, love the triple play. Jenny's and Natalie's looked so complicated, but of course were not. I saw the secondary pattern in Jenny's and like that look. Love Natalie's, will be trying that in a smaller size. You ladies rock.
Love all of these quilts but Natalie’s is my favorite.
Oh my goodness! I'm not a modern fan, but I loved the look of Natalie's quilt! And I always lean towards the two color quilts, so seeing the new color in the way Jenny did it....Beautiful!!! I think I would absolutely try doing both of those quilts!! Thanks, Ladies!!!
I loved Misty's quilt today. I'm a fan of the larger pieces, and the fabric line was beautiful ! I always have trouble once the pieces get smaller. You were brave Jenny !
I love that Jenny shows when something is hard for her. There are times where i sit and flip pieces around over and over and it's good to see she does the same thing. ❤
The three quilts are all just beautiful! Natalie, you look Amaxing!❤
On topic: I love when they give twin size quilt instructions. Natalie’s was my fave, then Jenny’s & then Misty’s mini quilt. Off topic: WITH UTMOST RESPECT, Natalie, you look awesome! As a struggling big girl and a true fan, I’d love to know how you did it.

Natalie, your talent and creativity blow me away. I respect your determination and privacy BUT, you have conquered a challenge that has eluded me. I’m resigned to being a big girl….until I see you. Any changes and habits that you can share would be greatly appreciated. I’m sure happiness and love are main ingredients. God’s blessings!

I’m still arguing with myself as to whether I want to buy another ruler, but this is so cool!
Natalie, I love your quilt and your sweater!! You look FABULOUS!!
I love that you highlighted all three different rulers to work with what you have. Latina Safir is an engineer and is brilliant at making rulers that can do it all! She’s an awesome teacher and I hope you get her to demo her clammy ruler or this one in an AHWM sometime.
Natalie’s quilt was my favorite this time!! Loved the sweater Natalie had on too!! Jenny’s quilt was awesome & of course the smaller version on Misty’s quilt won my heart. Amazing ladies! B Thx so much!!
I just love all the quilts but my favorite is Natalie’s it’s so whimsical ❤❤❤❤
I really love watching you three, and I learned so much at the age of 60. Thank you so much for the tutorials. I love that you understand people that have problems reading instructions and is visual reader. Your techniques are easier than the other people I have watched on KZread. When I see something I want to do I look through your tutorials until I find what I need help with. Thank you!
Love your videos and so grateful to your different teaching methods. On a side note. Natalie you are looking amazing, I pray it is by choice and not a result of a negative health condition.
I was so pleased to see that at least one of you used basic rulers. I have so many darn rulers already that I just don’t think I can add even one more to my collection. 🎉😂!!!!!
Love Jenny's small blocks and the 2 colors. All the quilts are beautiful, and Natalie, you look so healthy and radiant!! Keeping this one while I'm doing my own sewing is like being at one of your retreats and sewing with all 3 of you. (-:
Natalie, you look so good! Your white top is very flattering and so is your hair style. Love all three quilts, ladies! Keep up the good work!❤️
Thank you girls I love them all! Natalie, you’re looking good with that weight loss.
I love them all but especially love the colors in Natalie's. And Misty's baby one-just darling 💗💗
Love them all. I think Jenny's is my favorite this month. I also love two color quilts.
You ladies just get more beautiful with age. Gorgeous!! Thanks for all your inspiration.
Natalie for the win. I love her quilt the most. All are beautiful.
I am so in love with jenny's... so many secondary patterns, and love the bump out!!! Misty's not a chevron is gorgeous, pillowcase is cuuute!!. I would love to see Natalie's in two colour like Jenny's, even if tones and hues of same colour, so the pattern becomes the star.
Absolutely the best Triple Play so far. All the quilts were so creative. Jenny, yours had that interesting quirk and was so fun to look at. Natalie, such a modern “twist”. Fun. Misty, the traditional half rectangle quilt made modern with delightful negative space. A success, ladies!!!
Natalie, I can so see your quilt in red white and blue!!! And it’s name would be Sparkler or Firecracker!
Natalie, I love how you always think outside the box all the quilts are gorgeous❤
Those are all absolutely gorgeous. I love the color of Jennie’s, that is just beautiful.
Love how Natalie's comes out with minimal waste. So so beautiful.
Love love love this triple play, you all seemed to just enjoy your selves so much .beautiful women and beautiful quilts
You know....I'm just a traditional quilt gal, but Natalie's quilt today just has me mesmerized. If I was ever going to make a modern quilt, this would be the one I think. I named it merry wanderer...it looks like a meandering walking path in a park. I'm surprising myself with my comment.😅. Love you gals!
Natalie's was my favorite. Love this quilt!
I really love this quilt! It went a little fast on the triangles for this 75 yrs young gal, but I printed off the pattern and am going to attempt making this. I’ve not done any quilting for 47 yrs then I started quilting about one year ago, thanks to You Tube. I was Busy with 3 kids, now I have 6 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. So I’m trying to get at least one quilt per special person’s I love. Thanks so much for your help!!!! Much love❤to you!! I was down to see you in November of 2022 and got my picture taken with your cardboard cutout and myself, I had so much fun. I’ll be back this year too. I’m hoping to meet you and Natalie personally!!!! Take care
"What's your favourite quilt block?" - the one I haven't made yet, that's what keeps me quilting! Lovely quilts again ladies.
I have been quilting for close to 40 years doing my own thing after I stumbled on Nancy Notions on TV. About a year or two ago I have been watching some on KZread. I have noticed so many different marking tools from tracing paper, chalk, to fancy disappearing ink, and believe it or not I recently heard of using antacids. One thing I haven't seen is that I use Crayola washable markers, these markers have not failed me yet. You might want to consider using them and the mark will show up really nice on camera. Its very easy clean up. Just as Jenny has mentioned I believe I am a rogue sewist when I do various sewing from clothing , quilting, and various crafts. I have always said I dare to be different. The down side is that I rarely if ever duplicate anything believe me I have tried and always have errors. So now I say there are no such thing as mistakes only hidden masterpieces. Thank you for your video's I love the triple plays the most.
Beautiful Natalie, Misty and Jenny!
Love all Triple Plays. But Natalie’s wins the prize. The quilt is beautiful as is Natalie. Can’t wait to find a line of fabric for this!!
Y'all just make my head spin!!! Soo many great ideas!!!! Love the closeness Y'all make me feel like I CAN quilt....
Had to watch this video in sections to absorb all the details. Stunning quilts as always.
Ladies these are absolutely beautiful I was so excited it was Friday today I have been waiting all week. I love them running late today didn't get to get a cup of tea with my watching and I hope I'm not late fir work lol. Usually I'm up before everyone with tea and a video on Mondays and Fridays but today it didn't happen. Love you all your like family. Thank you so much for sharing I love them. Natalie your quilt is so beautiful I can see the squares rolling I love this quilt. Misty your quilt reminds me of the chandelier quilt but bigger and Jenny I see so much in yours that it makes me crazy my brain is wonky but I love them all thank you for these till Monday and Friday tea time see you then. I'll watch other videos of you all to fill the time being. Have a GREAT weekend and week God bless you all. Cindy G
Oh, Natalie! That spinning squares quilt is outstanding 😮😮😮
Love all your quilts ladies. Natalie, yours just popped in my brain, it is so fun and playful. Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial!
I love all the quilts but Natalie’s is my favorite. It’s such a happy quilt! 💕
Jenny did it again. She made a block look soooooo easy!!!
I love Natalie and her innovative ideas. Haven’t seen the trio for a while and Natalie is looking absolutely stunning
Natalie, you are looking fabulous, Kudos! OK, onto the vid ❤️
oh my you three are always so amazing!! BUT JENNY!!! your quilt really did hit it out of the park
Natalie you look amazing. You have lost weight. I love viewing the triple play. I get great ideas from you three ladies.
When I first watched this TriplePlay, I didn't think I would make any of them. So here I am telling you I took a "leap of faith" and TRUST in the Doan girls and MSQC. Half rectangles no longer scare me! Thank you so much!
Oh my goodness!!!! Jenny's quilt star is breathtaking! All your quilts are GEORGEOUS!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩
It's a toss-up - Natalie's Spinning Squares & Jenny's red/white quilt are my favorites. I love Misty's small bejeweled quilt. 3 beautiful quilts!
All 3 are beautiful!!!
Please make another triple play book!! As always, love each of your creations of color and design! ❤
This time I must pick Natalie's quilt as my favorite. The fabrics she chose really made it stand out.
Love your videos, kindness, and the way you inspire others. Thank you! I was fortunate enough to be able to visit your store several years ago and I had such a great time. Thank you for all your inspiring videos, they have helped me come a long way from where I started.
Natalie, I love your sweater!!! Love all the different ways to make these quilts....
Natalie love your quilt. Oh and you look AMAZING! I’m so proud of you.
I just love Natalie’s quilt, so bold but yet traditional looking, just my style! Keep up the good work ladies! Til next time, always watching.
96+ I plan on giving all 3 of these a try. What a beautiful way to show off great prints. (Natalie, LOVE your sweater!!)
Ladies all your quilts are amazing. Natalie I love your fabric choices and the size of your blocks. Thank you Ladies for your triple play tutorials.
You girls are awesome. It is nice to have 3 different views. I appreciate all of your creativity!!!!
Ladies, that was so fun and relaxing!! Each quilt had something unique, shapes, color, pattern and sizes (love that little mini quilt ; D ). LOVED the colors. Jenney it's nice to know that things can still surprise you in the quilt making world. By the way, You have beautiful hands!
I LOVE the movement in Natalie's pattern! Misty's pattern is great for something that is quick to put together, which is not simple squares. AND, Jenny, your quilt is beautiful as well; that thin sashing really makes it special.
Love them all! I can see each of your styles in each quilt which makes it so fun! I just love Triple Play❤ I also think Natalie has an engineers brain. Natalie, yours is amazing.
I love each quilt but was especially drawn to Misty’s. I enjoy each triple play and love that you share your talent and creativity!!!
The way Jenny puts her 'sashing' on the individual blocks is the way I've always done it - sewing a great big long sashing between rows allows too much stretching.

Yes great tip I agree.
I love triple play Fridays - you are all so creative with your designs
Happy to see another ruler by Latifa. I took a class with her for her clammy ruler. She’s a brilliant engineer and so nice!
Ladies, you never cease to amaze! Triple Play is one of my favorites. I always love seeing each version unfold. Natalie’s reminds me of 80s theme - love it!
Best 3 play ever ❤
Three beautiful quilts ! Great ideas and instructions from each of you ! Three slim ladies, y’all look great!
Love triple play! The personalities in pattern ideas and fabrics are great!
Love them all! Natalies is probably my favorite
I love it when Jenny tries to “help” Natalie and Natalie tells her - this is the way I am doing it - with an “oh mom” smile

Yes, a lot of interrupting the younger women. Unnecessary
I think this is my favourite triple play ever! So many amazing quilts and great tips. You girls are fantastic! Love your creativity.
I never realized how beautiful Natalie is 😮 these ladies are so pretty and so talented! I love ❤ Triple play
Naralie I loved your quilt. Your choice of fabric is always colorful and dramaticAll your quilt were great .
LOVE Natalie's quilt this time. GREAT JOB!! On a side note: You're looking GREAT Natalie!! Good for you!!
You are so so cute together, that's a real delight to watch you teaching us fantastic projects !!! ✨✨✨✨✨✨
I think it would be interesting to fussy cut the center square in Nat's quilt and finish it like Jenny did (using background triangles to snowball), then do everything else like Natalie did. Love that quilt!
You guys have outdone yourselves again! These are for the beginner quilter/sewist (Misties) and the medium experienced (Natalies) and the extra experienced (Jennies). I LOVE how Nat's and Jens look so hard but actually are just smaller easy blocks sewn together! I had to buy Natalie's exactly to make hers that I just gushed over! Jennies is amazing also and I can see it in red and green but also wonder what print squares would do! The extra mini triangles of Mistys is really adorable!
All three were fantastic!
Jenny.... LOVE this... how many scrappy quilts do a make in this manner.... how else am i going to sew up ALL my fabric before i die!!!... I'm 76 this year... Natalie... your brain makes such beautiful things... TY and Misty... you help me understand so much about what's always up and coming to keep us interested... You girls are the best... Friday's are the best when Triple Play.. Hugs, GB
Awesome. I like how striking the blocks are with HRTs. This is the best triple play. Thanks.
I love the triple play week. Natalie's quilt is gorgeous...my mind is blown.
These are fabulous! Your creative minds do awesome things. It is nice to see how each HRT was produced. To see three women take a specific challenge and then come up with three different patterns is so unique. I truly believe that you ladies are outstanding in your design and teaching. Blessings to y'all.

It's amazing how you all start out with 1 design but come up with such different results. I loved them all. Jennie's quilt spoke to me because I love the 2 color look with no prints. Great job!! Also, Natalie, I just wanted to say you look fabulous!!
I loved watching the different ways to get the half rectangles ! I love all the quilts, your all so creative ❤
