29:15 Dr. Lake’s diet
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ian Lake! Dr. Lake is a medical doctor and type 1 diabetic who ran 5 marathons while fasting for 5 days. He ran a total of 100 miles in 5 days! Dr. Lake's main goal was to show how nutritional ketosis can be safe for type 1 diabetics.
Keep in mind that to accomplish this dangerous and amazing feat, Dr. Lake trained his body in many different ways. Taking something like this lightly could have been deadly.
A type 1 diabetic can not produce insulin in enough volume to maintain blood sugar. This is very different from type 2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes have more than enough insulin and often have too much, leading to insulin resistance.
Dr. Lake explains that our bodies can multifuel, which means we can use sugars and fats for energy. In an ideal situation, our bodies can flip between whatever fuel they need. To burn fat as fuel, your insulin has to be low.
Dr. Lake lost over a pound of fat per day during his 5-day fast. To prepare for a longer fast, you have to become fat-adapted. You must lower insulin to adapt your body to running on fat fuel. To lower insulin, lower the food that stimulates insulin-carbohydrates.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition associated with type 1 diabetes. Ketoacidosis occurs when sugar in the blood can not get inside of the cells, starving them of energy. Some medical professionals believe that ketosis can put you at risk for ketoacidosis, but other doctors are against this idea.
Dr. Lake currently follows the keto diet, leaning more towards the carnivore diet. His diet consists of about 100 grams of protein per day, dairy, and some leafy greens.

I started at 234 pounds… I now weigh 147. I cut all forms of sugar, I cut bread, rice, oatmeal , all carbs except veggies… I intermittent fast ( 16-8) but I ONLY EAT TWO MEALS WITHIN MY EATING WINDOW and I DO NOT SNACK BETWEEN MEALS. And I make sure BOTH MEALS are at a CALORIC DEFICIT… I also walk 4 days a week for 40 minutes. I make sure my meals are salted liberally and I drink a lot of herbal teas with a tiny bit of stevia. I also play a lot with my fasting window. Sometimes I do OMAD if I’m not hungry too. Thank you Dr. berg.

Dr Josh O Mara says running does not remove visceral fat (the fat inside your organs, liver, heart, abdomen), you can be skinny, but fat on the inside. The only way to loose visceral fat effectively is thru SPRINTING, that's 15-30 seconds of sprinting a couple times a day. He showed studies of marathon runners, he himself was a runner as well, surprisingly they had a high amount of visceral fat showing in their body scans. Highly recommend his videos about visceral fat. He told the runners to stop running, just sprint.

I have lost about 35 lbs in the last 2 months and here is what I did. I went from 3 meals to 2 meals a day. I cut out almost all carbs from my life, I eat breakfast and dinner and in breakfast I eat a 2 egg omelette sometimes with cheese and sometimes without and no bread, with a cup of tea or coffee again without any sugar and a hand full of almonds sometimes. And in dinner I eat a little bit of carbs and I try not to go for seconds and thirds. I eat dinner earlier too like around 5PM to make that fasting window longer. From 230 lbs I am down to 195 lbs and have never felt better, my back pain is gone and overall I feel a lot healthier and have way more energy than before. Thank you Dr. Eric for everything that you do. God Bless

I tried 4 times and everytime i ended up giving up after 3 days and eating more calories and junk because i just felt so miserable during the 3 days. I dont know how you guys do it. instead im just following 3 meals but a keto-like diet (sometimes i go slightly more carbs because this is an expensive diet to maintain when you eat out) but still lost a steady 1kg/1-2 weeks and i feel mentally happier and physically better. Good for you but i just can't stand the hunger - it makes me go crazy and i absolutely cannot work when hungry.

00:00 🏃 Dr. Ian Lake, a type 1 diabetic, fasted for 5 days and ran five marathons, aiming to demonstrate extreme ketosis and fat adaptation. 02:29 🏃‍♂ To ensure deep ketosis, they aimed to burn around 20,000 calories in 5 days through extensive physical activity. 05:47 🔄 Type 1 diabetics need to inject insulin, hindering fat burning; adapting to fat or ketone usage requires lowering insulin levels. 08:56 🍽 Nutritional ketosis involves reducing carbohydrates, around 30-50g per day, forcing the body to burn fat and produce ketones. 09:38 ⚖ During the experiment, participants lost almost 7 pounds of fat in 5 days, showcasing rapid weight loss under extreme ketosis. 11:42 🔄 Fasting and lowering insulin sensitivity are effective ways to transition into ketosis, with hydration and electrolyte management crucial. 14:00 🏃 Dr. Lake's personal transition to keto-adaptation involved gradually realizing the body's ability to use stored fat for energy during physical activity. 16:48 🚑 Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a severe type 1 diabetes complication; nutritional ketosis does not pose the same risk and is distinct from DKA. 18:39 ⏰ Fasting becomes easier with time; initial challenges are psychological, and subsequent fasts are more manageable with reduced hunger. 20:11 🍽 Exercise while fasting is easier when keto-adapted; the body becomes efficient in utilizing stored fat for energy during physical activity. 20:26 🏃 Fasting and exercising can go hand in hand, utilizing the body's fat stores for energy, approximately 85,000 calories, making shorter fasts feasible. 21:22 🚫 Extended fasting beyond 5 days may raise concerns about potential protein breakdown, emphasizing the need for caution and monitoring to avoid muscle mass loss. 22:30 🔄 Regular testing of ketone levels, with values typically higher during fasting or after exercise, contributes to demonstrating nutritional ketosis and the body's reliance on fat for fuel. 24:21 🏋‍♂ Participants in a 5-day fasted run experienced an absence of soreness and injuries, suggesting the anti-inflammatory effects of ketones may aid in sport-related recovery. 27:08 🏃‍♂ Overcoming the mindset of needing to fuel before physical activity is liberating, especially for individuals with type 1 diabetes, allowing spontaneity in exercise without extensive preparation. 28:46 🍝 Contrast between conventional carb-fueled sports nutrition and ketogenic approach, with keto eliminating the need for excessive carbohydrate intake, reducing digestive issues during exercise. 29:24 🥩 Current dietary preference leans towards a more carnivore-based approach, including green leafy vegetables, fish, dairy, and avoiding seed oils, sugar, and excessive carb intake. 31:23 🍷 Personal experience reflects a shift away from alcohol consumption, citing decreased tolerance and reduced significance in the overall diet compared to previous years.

Based on my observations, assuming your magnesium level is at 6 to 7mg/dL based on the RBC Mg blood test, then having your Vitamin D3 at 125ng/mL reverses the autoimmune disease that affected your pancreas. High D3 causes greater gene expressions that require more Mg as now you will have more T reg cells to modulate your immune system from attacking it self.

If you hit a weight plateau like i did just keep going, eventually it will break and you will lose more if you want. The first weight loss goes fast but after that it takes almost as long to lose weight as it did to gain it :) The good news is you just have to manage your fat burning, and you can burn fat in your sleep and while sitting still. It just takes time, and there is no way to speed it up. The body only burns so much fat per hour. If you try to speed it up you will likely kick the body out of fat burning and it will drain glukose stores instead. Thats all. Have a nice day.

Just broke into my first sustained 20/minute mile over 5 miles with a 15lbs pack weight of the season. Walking can't really be overstated on how good it is. It nukes time sure, but something about it just feels good and works well. Hoping by the end of the season I'll be able to keep the slow jogging constant so I can push to runs when needed without breaking form. Eventual goal is a marathon a day.

From an evolutionary perspective…as bipeds, walking was what we were designed for and thus our bodies are actually “primed” for walking as the most superior form of exercise. 💯 time burn but walking also gives us so much more (sunshine, mindfulness, fresh air etc) than simply its metabolic benefits.

Nice! I used to run marathons (back in my 30s) and still run sometimes--mostly to get a few sprints/cardio in once a week. As I get older, I've actually come to appreciate walks more and more. You can squeeze them in while waiting (such as waiting for one of my kids doing an organized activity) without having to wear special clothes or sweating up a storm and having to take shower. All you need are comfy shoes. I especially love a walk after dinner in the evenings.

On Jan 25, 2024 I weighed a disgusting 201 lbs...the most ever in my life. Today is March 7, 2024 and I weighed 175 this morning. That's 26 lbs. in 42 days. It simply required cutting out sugar (almost entirely), intermittent fasting and moderate exercise. If a person really wants to lose weight, it absolutely can be done; it's not even that hard. Most people get more satisfaction from eating/drinking the wrong things than they do from being fit. It's that simple. If you're fat, you're getting something from it.

THANK YOU Dr Berg and Dr Lake!!! I am a Type 1 Diabetic who has been struggling with weight and blood sugar control for years. I’ve recently been fasting and eliminating most carbs and sugar. I also completely eliminated alcohol. I’ve lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks but could never understand why my glucose levels were still running high at times even while fasting. I now understand that it was likely the glycogen being released in my body. You’ve answered so many questions for me in this short 30 min video. Fasting and Ketosis is a whole different ball game for Type 1 Diabetics and unfortunately there is not a whole lot of information available on this subject as it pertains to Type 1’s so I really appreciate this information.

It's a fast-inating concept... I'm a type 1 and started experimenting with intermittent fasting about a year ago. I started with an 18 hour fast, then 36 hour a few weeks apart. 2 months later, I did a 3 day fast (that was supposed to be a 5 day), followed by a 5 day day fast 2 months after that. A month following my 5 day fast, I landed in the hospital with an obscure allergy because the urgent care doctor didn't want to give me steroids due to being a type 1. The allergy resulted in erythema multiforme, and I was unable to eat for 10 whole days due to terrible mouth ulcers, and I could only drink salt water. I was so grateful for the fasting experience leading up to that involuntary extended fast, as my body knew what to do. I lowered my insulin and was able to maintain glucose levels easily. It's time for another extended fast!
