I once asked Bas through the cameo website to wish my friend, who was going through tough time then, a happy birthday. Most of the celebrities on that website do like a 10-20 second brush-off, like yeah whatever, happy birthday. Bas did like a 10-minute recording with a corny but funny joke, and an elaborate encouragement projecting those problems on himself and how he dealt with a tough period in his life. I was so impressed how caring he was and my friend absolutely loved it. He was able to go through the tough period and is doing much better now, and I think it's because of Bas.

In 1998 I met Bas at an Mma event in Huntington Beach. It was in some busted up Shady looking Warehouse. I was 16 and I asked for his autograph. Not only did he give me his signature he took the time to talk to me and my Dad for a few mins in between fights. I'll never forget how kind and encouraging he was. Gave me really good advice on training. Definitely gave me extra motivation.

Loved watching this man in the ring all those years ago. One thing: Even at Bas's age I could feel the incredible, raw, destructive power of his shots when he demonstrated on the equipment. And I can tell there is quite a bit more in his "tank" than he showed here. My liver hurts from just watching this video. Truly one of the great fighters of his day. Cheers

I only knew him from his Early fights in Japan. Later I got to know his personality outside the ring a bit, and what a cool guy he is. He exudes the confidence of a top ranking champion and although that doesn't always mean you will make a good coach, its plain to see that Bas is an excellent instructor too.

Uploading again!? This is what I like, rather then a teacher show me 50 different strikes or submissions in a 2 hour session, just take 1 good shot that works, practice over and over until it's instinct. The way you explain it though is add the shot into a variety of combos, never keep the same pattern, that's so true I think. I see fighters so often you can see it in there eyes setting up for a strike/combo/drill they practiced.

That's a good thing to do. I prefer to do always look at their chest, it works better for me to know when his throwing something, because looking him at the eyes was making me fall for every faint the guy throwed. Off course, that's just me, maybe for most people it works better that way.

I started to dread the sound of his voice, as we use his all round shadow fighting as a warm up before training every morning at 5.30am. His warm up is a 28 minute hell session (asking as you put everything into it). Now I'm a bit fitter, I love it. It's my wake up, and gets me ready for a good hard training session.

Bas Ruten is a legendary fighter and commentator. I still remember first being introduced to MMA from the IFL team fighting show. This was before I even knew UFC existed and Ruten coached the pythons on IFL. Most of the pythons were extremely tactical and had the best overall fighters, to me. I highly recommend finding a dvd on ebay of the IFL or finding the show to watch because it was awesome even though it's quite a bit steps below UFCs level but still great. Bas commentating was the best ever in Pride. Wish he and Rogan were the commentators of UFC.

It's just paraphrasing what Bas said. In a pancrase fight he was getting angry because the guy said he was close fisted punching him in the face, which was against the rules. The guy kept lying so Bas purposefully went for the body and in his own words "broke his liver". He needed to go to the hospital. Bas is the man.
