Turn acetylene off first then oxygen second. The oxygen will push the remaining acetylene out the end of the torch thus blowing the flame out. This prevents the flame from following back through the torch which will wreck your seals and on a really bad day it can wreck you…….. safety first

Es al revés! Si apagas el acetileno primero la llama se propagara hacia adentro de la antorcha creando una pequeña explosión, primero el oxígeno. Luego el acetileno.

@@maximohuenulef your theory is completely false and the reason for flashback arrestors. I have listened to more backfires from people doing it your way than I can count, I quickly correct them. Not only does your torch have an oxygen supply but there is also oxygen in the air you’re breathing. If you turn off oxygen on your torch first you have an existing flame that will easily follow back into the torch during low flow shutdown, on top of that your tip is hot and can reignite the torch if under heavy use. The only time you should turn off the oxygen first is under sustained backfire, this happens when your torch is extinguished during backfire. You will see black smoke coming from your tip. In this case quickly turn off your oxygen because your internal flame only has one source for it.

Why do I keep seeing people turn off their torches 2 different ways? Acetylene off first then Oxygen. Oxygen off first then acetylene. Why is the industry not rock solid on what the proper way to do it is???

This is how youd get taught at college but the gauges dont work at all work places so at work i get taught to set oxygen pressure by testing it out on ur skin. As for the acetylene i got taught to always have the gauge set at the maximum. And as for lighting it i got taught to turn on oxygen and acetylene not just the acetylene because it will give off less s### in the air cus u have already turned on both in the first place so no black smoke will be given off at all
