HOW TO LEARN THE FLAT LOOP ROPE TRICK

Beginning Trick Ropers all start with the same horizontal loop. Join Dan Mink, The Rhinestone Roper and multiple Wild West World Champion as he explains the Rope Trick called
THE FLAT LOOP. It is the starting point for many Wild West stunts and more difficult rope tricks. It is fun, easy to learn and not physically demanding. Many youth and senior dance troupes use this trick in their dance routines.
Here is how it's done.

Very clear instructions on the flat loop. I thought the slow motion helped a lot because you can see more clearly when the loop begins to spin.

Can you please help me, I have been trying everything in this video and I still feel like as soon as I throw the rope I can’t initiate the spin and the rope just tangles

The best way for me to help is for you to video a typical attempt and email or text it to me. Just a few seconds long will work. Then I can look at it and maybe even slow it down to see what is happening. rhinestoneroper@gmail.com 208-320-3633

HI Nath, it would be more productive if you could send me a short video of your typical attempt at starting the loop. Then I can make a more informed suggestion. I believe that replaying and watching the part where I start the loop many times will help teach your brain the rhythm of the starting motion.

Do you need a specific kind of rope for this? I’m going to learn soon.

Hi Luke, Welcome to the wonderful world of trick roping. This trick can be done with any rope. If you wish to learn trick roping in general, some ropes definitely work better than others. I mostly rely on the 3/8 inch cotton spot cord.

@@rhinestoneropers9204 if I use an old heeling rope, does that lean more towards handicapping myself or making it easier?

Is that a basic rope from a hardware shop? I want to cosplay Cowgirl Princess Peach and perform with her rope, basic stuff. We can't have wire or anything that can hurt someone

The rope in this video was purchased from Western Stage Props, then modified by me. I modify ropes for new ropers to fit their height and needs. The basic rope is 3/8 inch cotton spot cord. You can no longer find it in the stores. Any hardware rope will work, to an extent, but if you can get spot cord, it's worth the trouble. And it's not hard to get now that you know where.

@@rhinestoneropers9204 thank you so much! I have been able to find the exact rope to make my own but if it doesn't work, I also found Western Stage Props on Amazon! Let's just hope I don't get high custom fees if I have to order that one.

You said yours is 12 ft. long and you're 6+ feet tall. I'm 5 foot 8, what would you guess the length i would need? Mine is 15 ft. Way too long. Thank you, and great teaching!

Hi John, The rope I used there was 12' but I like one that is 16 to 17' because there are so many good tricks to go to from the flat loop. Many involve stepping in to it. I bet that the 15' will be good for you once you have the trick down better. While you are learning, try 12'.

HI Jonathan, In what way are you ruining hondas? Your hondas should be lasting for years. What are they made of? Do you use finished leather with the finished side out? What tricks are you doing? How do I keep the hondas in shape? Are you making your own burners? I'm glad to discuss hondas with you. I just need more details to get on the same track with you. Later Dan

@@rhinestoneropers9204 it's made of Samson spot cord. I mean I don't buy a new rope every time I just cut off the bad part and make a new one. I practice probably for about an hour a day outside.
