How to layer colors for an acrylic pour - It matters!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It is probably not surprising to most acrylic pour artists that how you layer color for your acrylic pours is really important. No one wants to get muddy colors to ruin their pour.
You also want to layer your fluid acrylic paint so that you amplify the colors you want to be more prominent and keep the other colors more subtle.
Color theory does play a part in how you layer your colors. Complimentary colors will create more muted muddy colors when placed next to each other. Colors closer to each other on the color wheel will make much more appealing mixtures.
For beginner acrylic pour artists I recommend you layer your pour paints with alternating transparent and opaque colors. When you have more of one type, try to ensure the two like types when put together aren't matched with colors that are too dark (for transparent) or too opposite on the color wheel for opaque colors.

Hi there, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am new to the pouring world so I need all the help I can get. I thought I had lost my creativity but seem to find it again once I started watching these great videos, however I have found it a bit overwhelming with so many artists and so many ways to do things. I have finally stopped watching so many videos and thought I would start with the beginners one. To me this is the most complicated video you ever made, as maybe I don’t exactly use my brain very often in choosing the colors. I take care to not have mud, and so far it works. More, on many of my paints I can’t see if it’s opaque or transparent on the bottle or other recipient. Funny thing is, that it always shows when it’s a semi transparent color. I realized not so long ago, that opaque colors overrule other colors, so I only use bits of it. I’ll come back to watch this video again later, as I want to understand how it really works. As always, so great video, thank you for your searching and explanations 🌺

As a left-brain engineer who LOVES to learn, thank you for explaining these concepts. I’m not throwing shade on the artists, only that I do not have the background experience/knowledge that most artists assume their audience has. Therefore, at times, I don’t understand their explanations. 🥰

Great stuff as always! Another thing to be aware of too are the color biases of certain colors. One might have 5 different types of blues with the blues being biased in different directions. Some blues are biased towards red (warm blues) while others are biased towards green (cool blues). So if you happen to choose a blue biased towards red in a pour that has yellow expecting them to mix together to create hints of green, you may instead end up with muddy results due to the color bias of that particular blue.

I watch SO many pouring artist’ videos and try the techniques they use, and they fail and I scrape, fail and scrape, fail and scrape, etc. I’d think after a year, I’d finally create SOMETHING, ANYTHING that resembled a real painting!
