How to Know if its a Good Bible Resource...

I get asked what the good commentaries are, who the good pastors are, best Bible resources, etc. And while I share those references all the time, this video addresses how to discern if something is heresy or not.

Pastor's wife here and I appreciate the breakdown you give. I would add to take everything back to the Bible. It is the inspired, inerrant word of God and if someone or a resource is saying something that goes against what God has given in his Word, red flag!! So many wolves in sheep's clothes preach Jesus is God's Son BUT downplay sin, discredit the Bible, etc. If they aren't teaching all of the Bible is trustworthy, run away!

To your point -at @4:40, I have a friend who seems very skeptical/concerned of reading anyone not recommended by her pastors. I once mentioned a Christian mother’s book that I was reading and that I can say was biblically solid (“M is for Mama”), and she asked me if my pastor recommended/approved of it… it’s just not reasonable to assume your pastor(s) would be reading every book you’re interested in much less a Christian book on being a mother… I told my friend that when I read a book, I don’t just absorb and adopt every viewpoint of the author, and that I’m responsible for measuring it against Scripture. Her point was that as you read, you’re gaining confidence in the author so it could be harder to be critical/discerning of the author’s words. My response to that is that that happens with our own pastors. Nobody has their theology completely error-free but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the liberty to read someone who we don’t agree with 100%.

Girl. You're saying all the things I've been thinking. And I can't say them in the church either, cuz I'm a woman. I prayed corporately ONE time and people lost their minds over it. Pastor's wife here too. And I bring questions no one wants to tackle. My ideas are shot down before they're fully out of my mouth. Keep doing what you're doing. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL so much

I looked him up and found that he was a great man of faith!! Very wise words today! A pastor should empower his flock. I came from a Church of Christ family, but was saved in a Southern Baptist and totally understand what you're saying about leaders who don't want their congregation to seek out knowledge and understanding from anyone but them. @4:30-THIS!!!! This is what I’m dealing with now at my age, because I’ve never had to question or examine what I believe because everyone had my same background. Now that I’m starting to go to a church that has the basic belief, but it looks different. And I was getting so caught up in this “is this right? Should we be doing this?” And here we are, chapter 2 in Ephesians, and the question is, “you’re so worried about the outward and what does your heart look like?” 😮 Message received, Lord. So now I’m doing the study that I should’ve done growing up.

I am a baby christian. I have been a believer my whole life, but ONLY because i was told to, not because i *actually* *truly* believed. I have never read any of the Bible or anything.....so when you first popped up the "Creeds" on the screen and i paused and read, im not gonna lie, i *almost* clicked off. Literally just because both of them specifically mentioned the Catholic Church (and to be clear, i have absolutely nothing against the Catholic Church or anything. I dont even know anything about it) i just read that and immediately thought "Well i dont agree with these "Creeds" if they are only including ONE denomination......so all that to say, i am SO glad i didnt just click off in ignorance and stayed for your explanation. Thank you.

I had a commentary last year I picked up and as I was reading through it, I knew something was wrong with it. A voice in my head kept telling me as I was reading it told me "That does not make any sense at all, this feels wrong" and felt sick to my stomach at times. I know the Bible is translated in so many ways and the same passage can mean different things to different people, even different things to the same person in different seasons of their lives, but it taught me to listen to that sound voice when I am in doubt, because that is the voice of God within us. When in doubt, I agree. Keep studying, keep asking questions and keep looking for answers.

Faith, thank you for this video. It truly had 'meat' in it, and I appreciate that so much. Would love to see more like this❤ I get frustrated when I think I've found good info only to realize it's not Truth. For example, this morning, I found a new channel, IMBEGGAR and watched a couple video's. I was completely agreeing with what he was saying until he started talking about Mother Mary and that we should take our heart problems to her. I was like, darn it. For myself, I really struggle to know what domination is right for me, and because of that, I had always said I was non dominational. I wished it was easier that God's word was preached as He says it, that I didn't have to feel like a detective with every single person or info I watch, read because it's exhausting. I'm reading through the Bible and thank God that I have gotten to the place where I want to know all of His word for myself. I did just order the Bible knowledge commentary you recommended, and I'm looking forward to getting into that to help me understand. I'm sorry for such a jumbled comment 😔 hope I made some sense.

So true! We were visiting a Wednesday night Bible study on Romans in a church & given a handout. I always read through handouts. As I read through, I thought, "That passage doesn't sound right!" I looked at the citation. It was D&C. Doctrine & Covenants. LDS. The leader hadn't recognized that she was pulling from an LDS site because it was Community of Christ, formerly the RLDS. Sincere I have lived in areas with significant LDS populations, I was more aware. (Plus, I'd founded myself on a few sites of theirs and CoC and done some research.) Look at the site. Does it have a Beliefs section? Look down at three bottom of the page. Google for info.

You go girl... you should be doing this... thank you for doing this... my goodness, we all come from different walks... and yet, if we are God's children we are all in the same family... and all these other things should bring us together, not divide. I come from a small church background where they call us them crazy tongue talking holy rollers, but that doesn't stop me from learning... I still learn from those who are different from me. And let go of the chatter... because I am chasing God, not man.

I’ve learned so much now that I just go down rabbit trails. There were some questionable resources that I used in the beginning but as I started to read my Bible with a commentary I started being able to tell when something was wonky. And my dad is one that says I ‘just need the Bible and even a child can understand it🫣’. But when I started using resources, I felt like I was finally getting it and excited to learn. Never did I think ‘Bible nerd’ would describe me yet here we are😂 I prayed for the hunger for His word and He faithfully gave it to me. Now I have a hard time stopping and getting chores done. So, now I have to find balance.🥴

In fact, I was hoping to go back to seminary in the summer to get my masters in women’s ministry and biblical counseling and they both endorsed me. I have since had to put that on hold because God has me and some other places, but I am so so blessed and grateful to have pastors like that. This was such a good and helpful video! I can honestly say that I was not encouraged in previous churches to measure what is being taught or said in a book by a creed! It was much like the other type of church you mentioned. I was one of those who were scared to look outside of that church. I would only listen to that music, that preaching, and would only dare look at books that were recommended from behind the pulpit. I was told to stay away from commentaries because they were written by men and I don't need their interpretation. While I certainly do not have all the answer or even slightly think I know it all, I am thankful for your advice! I know it can be daunting to try and figure out if someone is on target with the truth, so I will definitely put this tool in my toolbox and use it!

13:23 Wow, thank you so much for explaining the Apostle's Creed in such a concise way, by breaking jt up, dear Faith! Whoever came up with it definitely did a great job at summarising what God's Message is about! ❤🤗👍 I have found a similar passage in 1 Corinthians 15 on Bible Gateway: "For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." I was never taught the Apostle's Creed, Faith, but I know from what I have received that everything this wonderful person wrote corresponds with the truth we believe in. 🤗🙌 So interesting! You know, sometimes someone to believe in us is all I need, all we need, actually, even when we are weak or feeling inadequate. Blessed are the feet of those who bring Good News! All I wanted to tell you is that even though I don't understand theology and some of the words you say, like "Armenianism", I get so much more from this than I can tell! 🤗 It's more about the spirit of this video. Words are definitely important, but without the heart, they lack in meaning. Thank you, Faith! This was enlightening! 🤗🙌❤️

Thank you for this video Faith. I am a newer Christian, did not grow up in the church or with a believer in my house. We've been gong to a church since Easter of 2023. When I was saved, I wanted to know God and the gospel so deeply so I read the whole Bible in about 9 months it is my favorite book I can never put it down. Something I truly value about the church my family attends (my husband and I have an 11yo son, and a 4 yo daughter) is that our Pastor is also very biblical but he is never ever afraid to point us to other resources. My 11 year old son asked our pastor about pre and postmillennialism and our he gave e our son a couple of books and a notebook and said "read these books, take notes, write down questions as you go, and when you're ready let's sit down once a week and we'll discuss whatever you need, I look forward to all the things I can learn from you." So hearing you speak of the importance of pastors encouraging people to find other resources is wonderful. Thank you Faith for the work you do and saying yes to God when he calls you to do something. I thank the Father for you and what He's doing through you.

Yes! Seminary was so hard because of some of the things that were believed. During my doctorate I was standing firm in the Word and my faith. I just gave my preaching students good and bad resources. But you are right discernment is soooo important. Shepherding is nurturing.🙏🏼

Thank you Ms Faith! I live smack dab in the middle of a morman town. I'm the one who "debates" with them, they don't come around much anymore, I was baptized southern baptist and I don't shy away from the Truth ... this was very helpful thank you again .. GOD bless ❤❤❤

Great video, thanks Faith! Exactly what you said about understanding dogma vs doctrine made such a huge difference in my life. It's crazy how much you see people calling each other heretics and apostates over secondary issues, especially online. It's sad. I am not particularly confessional, but I did grow up saying the Apostle's Creed each week. So I use that, as well as checking the statements of faith on my church's and seminary's websites. My seminary in particular has doctrinal commitments for students, which are generally broad dogmatics (plus inerrancy). Less strict than those required of the faculty. Great yardstick for me. If it isn't on that list, let's keep the "h word" off the table please!!!

I love this! I grew up in fear of translations that weren't KJV. 🤦 I didn't learn how to find the proper study materials until my second Bible college. This video is going to be a blessing for so many. I'm so glad you posted this. ❤️

I'm gonna go out and say this, I know people may not believe it, but I've never been afraid of going out and looking for answers. I'm a member at a Baptist church... I was raised Assembly of God. -_- yeah weird right? There are denominational differences there, BIG denominational differences, but hey, there's nothing wrong with that. I don't think differences are bad. If I don't feel the Holy Spirit telling me to change my basic beliefs then I don't. I move past it. God bless you for being bold! I love your channel.

It really does depend on the church. My pastor is associated with Southern Baptist, but he encourages research, questions, and really looks into the Hebrew and Greek words etc. He really wants to grow the church and have everyone be responsible for their own walk with God. It's been great for me as a new believer to get the background and context. It's so important!

Thank you Faith for providing this information. Although I grew up in the Episcopal church and was tasked with learning both creeds, I have been to various other denominational churches, except catholic, and not one pastor/theologian/teacher has provided this information or even discussed either creed. This is very odd to me.

Where can I find the text of the creeds to be able to copy & paste them to print? (Without straining my eyes to read the pictures in the video, lol! 😅) I Love this! Thank you for sharing! Thus is one of the topics I requested for 2024, I'm so glad you covered it!

One of my favorite Bible teacher is Chuck Missler (rest in peace). I remember him saying time and time again NOT to believe him to go and research for yourself !! His teaching videos are so precious to me. But the MOST important resource to my gleaning God's holy Word is the Holy Spirit and prayer.

Make studying the Bible a hobby. We spend quality time and resources on our hobbies. Make studying the Word a hobby. Take everything in context within the chapter, book, and the Bible as a whole. God bless you! STAND FAST, Jesus said over and over DO NOT BE AFRAID and BE NOT RECEIVED. God bless you and keep you!
