How To Knit a Top Down Hat With Bulky Yarn - Knitting Tutorial

Kelley Hobart from Alpaca Direct shares tips and ideas on how to cast on a top down hat pattern using the 'A little to the left hat' pattern by Amy Gunderson. Often with single ply bulky yarn the initial cast on stitches are difficult to start on the needles so Kelley shows you how to use the Long Tail Cast On and Yarnovers to avoid this problem. Please note, this video assumes you already know the long-tail cast on technique.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying several techniques to start a Musselburgh hat and just can get the cast on right with sock yarn. This did the job. Again, thank you soooo much.

This is super helpful! I'm knitting my first ever hat and am struggling with getting the sizing right - a bit of a problem, since the chenille yarn I'm using (not my best idea, admittedly 😅) isn't super happy to be frogged as many times as it has been. I figured it's got to be easier to get a good fit if knitting top down, like with toe up socks (which seem to be only marginally more popular than top down hats).

For those who want to see this video slower: Touch in the center of video to pause, look for the gear icon and then look for the menu “playback speed”, and you can change to several settings lower which ever you want.

Alpaca direct I would first like to thank you for the video I like the start of this where the opening at the top seems quite small almost a nice part of the design I have one reservation I'm assuming you do these videos for people who don't know how to do this who can't really figure it out Or need a refresher course and possibly have never done it before ... for those reasons it's hard to understand why you move so fast when we are searching you out to learn it seems that all we're learning is how fast you are and if you were to slow down and we saw your every move of the needle we'd have something concrete to attach our learning to, I will suffer through because I want to know how to do this but may need to reference other instructionals/ videos ... thanks for trying

I’m having a lot of trouble getting this pattern started so I was glad to see you’re video. After this start with the magic loop do you switch to the dpns?
