Another option, once you know your best size, is to cast on using a provisional cast on, working from the middle of the hat with your full stitch count out to the first crown, then when that half is done return to the middle, put your cast on stitches back on your needle, and work in the opposite direction. This makes it easy to have two colors, to work only a certain number of inches of ribbing, or to not bother with increasing.

I have an interesting option for you. If you need to use up fingering yarn and you have leftover small skeins from, say, an advent project; you could knit a mosaic pattern with the small skein color into the brim of the hat. This might be especially fun if you can't decide the contrast color small skein you want to use up or the mosaic knit pattern. You could also knit the mosaic colorwork band into the foldover section so you can match the color to an outfit and just flip it to the other side to match a different outfit. I might try this and report back since I'm going to have an s-ton of leftovers from this current advent project I'm working. I'm going to use a neutral base for the hat too, so no matter which side is showing, the base color will work.

I've made 3 so far and have plans for another 3 already. Just wanted to say it's pronounced Mussel-bra not Mussel-borough, I'm from just south of the Scottish border. I'm going to make my next one with the ribbing in the centre, I've already made one with a contrasting band in the centre of the tube for a contrast brim.

Many thanks for the pronunciation tip! British names frequently confound me, so it's immensely helpful to learn the accepted way to say "Musselburgh." (I'm still recovering from learning that "Cholmondeley" can be pronounced "CHUM lee." Sigh>)

Ysolda pronounces it Musselborough. I’m not hearing a distinct bra sound as you mentioned. Just went back and listened to her part 1 tutorial. I think most Americans feel pretty good about not saying Musselburg as in burger. It’s not easy to get subtle distinct pronunciations correct when the untrained ear is hearing Mussle-borough.

When I looked back at my projects I was surprised to realize I have knit 15 Musselburgh hats in the last few years. It’s such a good project for that single skein of fingering weight yarn.

Lots of wonderful tips. I’ve made about 6 or 7 musselburgh hats. All just stockinette, one was in two colors. I like the ribbed brim a lot. That will be my next one. Looked like Toaster was having a nice dream 😊❤

This is my absolute favorite hat pattern. I make them every year for my husband, myself, and my son, and saved all the baby ones for baby on the way.

Hi Natalie. I loved seeing all your musselburgh hats you have made They all look great. I am thinking of knitting a hat for winter as it is coming up winter in Australia. I have crocheted four hats for myself and wear them when I got for walks in the morning to keep my ears warm and head as it can get cold. You inspired my first one 2 years ago, and now I’m on my third. I get cold headaches when I walk my dog in windy Colorado during the winter, and this is the only hat that can prevent them. I seriously don’t think I’ll ever knit a different hat pattern. Thanks so much for showing the sock set example! And I would SO love a cast-on tutorial. I can do the pinhole, but it’s pretty painful mentally. 😂

I started my first Musselburgh last week and spent a lot of time looking at your various projects on Ravelry to decide if I was going to do one colour or two. The cast on / first round was super hard, I'm not a magic loop knitter, and I ended up using smaller needles for the first 3 rounds then went up and it worked for me ❤

I knit one last winter and love it. I have yarn to knit 2 more. I discovered I need to make it a little longer.

Totally agree that the Musselburgh is the best hat! I have yarn picked out for another that will be fingering weight held with a strand of suri. Have you thought about doing a version with fuzz?

I love the Musselburgh! I can never figure out the cast on though. I usually do a long tail cast on and hide it on the inside. Looking forward to your tutorial!

You’re welcome! I use magic loop for the crowns and switch over to 16” needles for the middle.

Great video! I looked in my projects and I have knitted 8 so far! I made scrappy ones, hand spun with my drop spindle, and long gradient color change yarn ones too!

Thank you! There are too many stitches for me to comfortably do magic loop on my 32" needles after the increases. Plus, moving over to 16" needles means fewer transitions and easier and faster knitting!

Please do a tutorial where you switch from magic loop to circular needles. ❤

I’m thinking about adding the ribbed middle section. Have you found that the ribbed section fits much more loose than when using plain stockinette? I’m thinking of doing a k2, p2 rib.

when you bring up how many inches the hat is, are you measuring that after you blocked it? my question is how will i know when to start knitting the decreases before I have blocked it.

Personally I find those hats ugly with the bit sticking up. I’m with Kent on that. Just a personal preference of course. Maybe I could just knit it a bit shorter. You have used some nice wool.
