This is a detailed tutorial for knitting a ribbed hat. I tried to develop a pattern that is both easy to knit and has a modern look. This hat (or beanie as some call it) is knit in the round on circular needles using the magic loop technique, but you can knit it with dpns as well. In fact, I usually switch to dpns for the last few decrease rounds.
This pattern is more of a recipe, meaning it shows you exactly what you need to do to make your hat fit - no matter your yarn or needle size. Since you would have to knit a swatch anyway, I personally don't feel its more complicated anyway. I will show you the tubular cast-on but you can use a longtail cast-on or any other method you prefer- as long as it's stretchy. There's a section where I show you how to determine when you can start decreasing the hat, and of course, I'll also show you how to finish things, weave in the ends and block it into perfect shape. Enjoy.

This tutorial was a serious rollercoaster of emotions. 1: Yes, I can do it. Let's start... oh, I have the wrong kneedles, let's do it anyway. 2: Wow I need to learn the magic loop. I can't do it, too difficult. This guy doesn't seem to explain it too clearly. 3: I cannot do it. 4: Ok the new kneedles arrived and I can learn the magic loop technique. 5: Too difficult, I give up. 6: Wait a minute I got this! Yes I can do it! He is brilliant! 7: SSK? What's that?? 8: OOOOOOOOH, nice. 9: Saw the tutorial 155 times. I can finish this hat. ........... Finished 2 hats in a week, subscribed to Norman's channel, opened a Church to praise him. Now I adore him.

Norman you are that person I wanted to have in my family or neighborhood who teaches these cherished artforms. I say this because it is unbelievable how much FREE information you have given away. This is such a rare gem in todays world. Not only that, you are such a wonderful wonderful teacher that teaches us the why behind each action. Truly empower your Students. I am much older than you but you have fulfilled my age old dream. God bless and thank you from the bottom of my heart. Vielen lieben Dank!
I've been a casual knitter since I was a kid, but your videos are really helping me to reach the next level, drastically improving my skillset and knowledge. The tubular cast-on for hats is such a game changer! I also appreciate your thoroughness and attention to detail. Thank you so much :D
Popping a stich marker on every 20 stitches when casting on is such a good idea especially for people like myself who have very poor vision. I can't believe that after over 60 years of knitting I never thought of doing that. Even when I started to lose my sight the idea never occurred to me. It will save me a lot of frustrating counting and recounting of stitches. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful beanie pattern and making it so we can easily customise the fit and shape. ❤
I've just finished my hat and I'm very pleased with the way it looks and very pleased that I managed to make it myself. Thank you Norman for showing me how to do it.
I think you have covered all the details including taking breaks. Thanks for this excellent project perfect for gifting.
@NimbleNeedles
2 жыл бұрын
oh yeah..hats make excellent gifts and I already got a certain someone lining up for one of these. And breaks are so important, can't mention it often enough ! :)
Great idea to add markers for every 20 sts of cast on. For all the years I've been knitting, I've never done this but rather keep casting on until I think I have enough. Then end up counting and recounting! I'll train myself to do this from now on and I know it will save a ton of time :)
I'm a crocheter who just recently took up knitting again, last time I knit I was 15 years old ,and can't believe how much I forgot. This helps so much. Thank you for helping us beginner or renewed knitters!

I am a beginner knitter and have always wanted to knit a beanie but I am always intimidated by the “difficulties and complexities” of circular needles, using dpn to decrease and just the sheer fear of starting a project which I may abandon later. But whenever I come across your tutorial videos, I gained some confidence in tackling the new project because you make it seemed so simple and doable. Extra plus point is your tutorials are always very clear. Will definitely try this as my first beanie project. Thank you very much for putting these videos for free especially for us beginners who may not want to spent more money buying patterns when we are spending a lot on buying the initial materials.
@NimbleNeedles

you can do it! go slowly and I'm sure you'll be able to tackle this beanie as well. It's easier than it may look. Maybe you will have to redo the first 10 rows once..but hey..that's what I call a learnin experience
I finished my first hat for my boy, it is not perfect, but I am proud of it and so is he! Thanks for the pattern!
I love your posts, Norman. The style is clear and friendly, I love your calm voice and constant reassurance that doing it another way is FINE, and you give a lot of extra information along the way. This was a great tutorial for anyone to watch especially a beginner. I'm a very experienced knitter and seeing your explanation will encourage others to have no fear in this small project. Thank you for sharing.
I tried to learn knitting and crocheting years ago as a teen, I couldn’t knit 😅 I wanted to try again so I found your channel from some advice from another crafter. After following your beginner practice video I moved on and tried to make the hat, on the second try I was successful! Now I have to make a scarf to match. Thanks for being so thorough and explain it so well!

Excellent tutorial! Thank you for your teachings! The instructions on how to calculate the stitches and decreases to get the desired size was very helpful. In my opinion, to understand the proportion as when to start decreasing is quite difficult, thus, this tutorial was very good. Thank you again for your teachings and patience. ❤

Thank. you Norman, I have been watching you for awhile now, and I love your style of teaching. you have such a pleasant demeanor and your voice is so nice to listen to. Your tutorials are always so clear, thank you! I think of myself as an intermediate knitter, but the hat I made for myself still seemed a bit 'wobbly'. Thanks to you, I now know why: I used the wrong cast on! For the things I make it usually doesn't matter that much, but if you fold a beanie up and the line is not straight that's quite noticeable (to me, anyway). I will attempt the tubular cast on for my next hat. Vielen Dank!
@NimbleNeedles

do try. I think it makes a lot of sense for a hat. Though, I got a lot o hats with a an alternating longtail cast on and feel that can look nice as well after blocking
Thanks. I’ve never seen that cast on. Great. 🙏
Thank you for making this video, as I see lots of hats on more heavy yarn and I strangle to know the size when I use DK instead of heaver weight. Your explanation on how to measure to get the proper size was super easy to understand. For me a light bulb went on and I was ohhh that is how is done.
@NimbleNeedles

just be careful when you transfer this pattern to super bulky yarn (say 10mm) Then the 7 stitches kept in the middle will probably be too much. Anyway, glad I was able to provide an Eureka kind of moment
So informative! I always learn something from you, thank you! I would love to see a video on different cast on techniques and when they are used. The same for a video on different bind off techniques and when to use them. Just a suggestion. ❤️

Great suggestion! and actually i am sort of already preparing a bit.
The how to calculate the number stitches to cast on is very helpful. Love the look of the tubular cast on. I would like to know more that, especially recommended uses. Also how to know when to start decreasing is good info, instead of a row count which rarely works for me. I use the Norwegian purl and it looks like it will make 2nd set up row faster. This looks like a great basic hat pattern for us beginner knitters. 🧶💕🧶.
@NimbleNeedles

if you have a look at the pattern, I go a bit more into detail when it comes to different kind of fits and when to start decreasing. At the end of day, I feel it's an error and trial process as tastes AND head forms differ a bit..so anything like "knit 30 rows or knit 20cm" is bound to not work out for most.
I actually just knitted my first hat on circular needles with a very similar pattern called "Ribelation" by Anne Gagnon. I'm going to give your pattern a try next!
@NimbleNeedles
2 жыл бұрын
yeah, that looks very similar. Certainly give it a try. if you download the pattern there are a couple of other options included.
I'm following this pattern using a different wool and needles. The instructions are so great, I've adapted them. In case others want to know what I'm using... Medium (4) 80% acrylic, 20% wool blend and 5 mm circular needles. I cast on 102 stitches and in the decreasing rows I used 5 instead of 7 between the two stitch markers because my wool is bigger. Thanks again. I'll finish it just in time for Christmas.
