So, I was very confused, cause every video I was finding was how to make a “DIY Chunk Blanket” and that’s knot what I’m doing. I started knitting when I was about 8, and I got into crochet thanks to it! I’ve been trying to make a blanket for quite some time now, but was never able to find such a helpful video! I have a book, but it only goes off of the basic leading things (lol) And for anyone still confused, and for myself if and or when I come back. R- Right Side L- Left side R- First and last stitch will be slip L- First and last stitch will be pearl (stockinette)

Thanks for the tip! I am now making a cardigan (my first project!) and am at the first cast off row for the back panel to shape the armholes for the sleeves. Would you advise me to continue this method throughout the decreases? I am noticing a large gap between the first loop on the needle (for the edging) and my other stitches. If you are decreasing you may want to decrease further away from the edge (if pattern allows it). Maybe that’ll decrease the hole? Without seeing, I’m not sure if I’m answering your question properly 🙃

Extra stitch? You wouldn’t have an extra stitch or so you just mean the edge ats? You will just knit them according to pattern.

Thanks for this video. I am doing a k2 p2 rib stitch. Each row starts with a knit stitch and ends with a purl. On the right side, I am slipping the first stitch as if to knit and slipping the last stitch as if to purl. On the wrong side it seems to make most sense to knit the first stitch and purl the last. Does that seem right?

This edge is exactly what I was looking for, but I have a few questions... The pattern I'm working on uses a garter stitch, and I've already started with normal garter stitch edges but I wanted to switch to the one you showed and the part I already did will be seamed with another piece using a crochet hook so it should be hidden, I believe. I'm kind of worried the seam will end up looking uneven. What do you think? Also, I decided to do the garter stitch with only purls and I tried to use this edge you showed, but I'm having a difficult time trying to purl the slipped stitch on the wrong side. Do you have any suggestions? Should I knit the first and last stitches on the wrong side instead? Thank you so much for the wonderful video. I loved it!

There are other methods of selvedge edges. I’m unsure of what your pattern requires but most of the time when you see pieces together you won’t see the edge stitch. You could always try what you’re proposing on a swatch to see if you like it?

What I usually do is always slip stitch the first one, and purl the last one, every row - I get the same result, is there a difference to doing it your way? I find purling the first stitch can be really tough.

It has a different look. There’s so many variations for making your edge neater. 😁

I have always slipped first stitch, this is the only way I have knitted.....my edges are always perfect for seaming.....it becomes so automatic ....I don t have to try to remember which way to go....I have taught many people this technique because they liked the finish I had on all my knitting

I have been knitting forever. I find knitting the first stitch on the purl row and purl the first stitch on knit rows works best for me. Make sure to pull the yarn on the first stitch quite tight. This method is perfect for seaming.

Hello and thank you for the tutorial! I wonder if you could help me understand something in a pattern. It says "Edge st: slip the first stitch of every row the opposite to how it presents itself." (does it mean purlwise?) an then "On alternate rows work all the sts an YO's in purl st except for the edge sts which are worked as indicated." (I cannot figure out "as indicated") Thx!!

Usually I add it on the edge but if you want to maintain the edge, you may want to switch out in the middle of your work.

It's supposed to stretch over 2 rows. YOu can try pulling the stitches tighter when you "slip". Then also block it when you're done.

Thank you for this :) I was wondering how you get the bottom(or the very first row of stitches you do) neat? Mine always look loopy and uneven. Can anyone reccomend a video that addresses how to make the bottom edge, rather than the side edges, neat?

Thanks for your tutorial. I've actually created a method that is identical on both edges - front and back. However, when the rows of pattern are NOT consistent - 4 rows purl - 4 rows knit 10 times, the edges aren't as attractive. Every tutorial I've watched, we only see garter or stockinette pattern. Let's see a combination...

Hello! Slightly silly question from a VERY beginner knitter- how can you tell the right vs wrong side of the work with a garter stitch? The first work I did was with a stockinette stitch, but I am about to try my hand at a blanket which calls for a garter stitch. I wanted to have as neat edges as possible which is how I found your video! It is super helpful overall, I just don't have a good eye for somethings yet! Thank you so much!

No worries! It’s definitely hard with garter stitch. I recommend placing a marker in the right (or wrong) side so you know which is which. They pretty much look the same and if you are knitting every stitch every round, it really doesn’t matter. If you plan to slip the beginning sts and do other edge sts, that’s when you need to know. Hope that helps!

I tried this technique and I don't know why but for some reason the right edge gets the braided pattern but the left one does not, it is something else in itself. I do not know why that is happening, maybe because I'm a leftie and I'm doing something wrong whilst mirroring the video;_;

Thank you! For the Garter stitch (since it's reversible) I would recommend placing a marker near the beginning of the right (rs) or wrong side (ws), whichever one helps you remember. Also, keep in mind some patterns start on the WS while others may start on the RS. If I get lost, I look for my "tail" that's how I keep track of my right and wrong side on reversible knits. Hope that helps!

see where the yarn is on one side?it's between the 2 stitches not at the end. this will be your wrong side that you pearl the first and last stitch. .hope this helps.

Make sure when you slip the first stitch (especially on the wrong sides) that your working yarn is in the BACK. alternatively you can just slip the first stitch and purl the last stitch of every row

I have seen this exact same method on other youtube videos and it has been titled as... The English Slip Stitch Selvedge Edge. 💐 I'm very new to knitting, and can't understand why anybody would knit with needles that don't have proper ends on them to stop your work from sliding off 🤔

LOL double pointed needles serve their own purposes. I don’t knit with them. DPNs are used when you knit something in the round with a small circumference and that requires you to knit from both ends.

To be honest I don't even know what - in the round - means yet. 🤣 I have terminal cancer and am literally teaching myself to knit by watching loads of youtube videos, which is incredibly frustrating. So far all I have managed to complete is 5 premature baby hats for a local hospital. I am learning slowly so that I don't get overwhelmed and give up. when you knit, you insert your needle through the stitches differently than when you purl. So slipping knit wise would be inserting needle from left to right (twisting your stitch) and purlwise from right to left.

Engrish hard if you’re working a garter stitch, it would be hard to remember which side your right or wrong side is. If you start on the wrong side then your “tail” will be on the left side and if you started on the right side, your right side would then have the tail on the left. You can also place a marker between the last 2 sts to help you remind which side is right or wrong.

I don’t understand why I am adding two extra stitches at cast on, one at the beginning and one at the end. It seems that then I don’t have the right number of cast on stitches that the pattern would call for. And watching the tech nique it doesn’t look as though you’re ever losing those two extra stitches to even it out to what was called for. Help.

You can also knit the first stitch in every row. Slip the last stitch in every row than purl with yarn in front of work. This is easy! . (so knit the first stitch always , dont knit the last stitch, turn your work and move the yarn forward to purl

I have a problem with all these knitting videos. I learnt to knit in the 'fifties when I was about 4 years old, and I do not knit like that at all! I'm told you knit 'continental fashion', and it really confuses me when I'm trying to follow what you are doing. I hold the yarn in my right hand, wrap it round the needle and pull it through the stitch: you hold the yarn in your left hand, and hook it through the stitch. Does everyone knit like this now? Trying to learn a new way of doing things is very difficult if the basic system is completely different! Have I got to start all over again after knitting for nearly 70 years?

I understand your frustration. Not everyone knits continental although it’s easier for crocheters since that’s how we hold the yarn. Since learning of this frustration, my recent videos include both continental and traditional demonstrations. Hope you find something you like! 👍
