How to Keep Your Feet Warm in the Coldest Winter
The feet are the weakest point on very cold winter hikes, and keeping them warm is the trick. Here I give a few tips to stop freezing and male your winter trips more comfortable, including the use of plastic bags! The boots I use are the Viking Hunter GTX, and the Foot bags are Helsport fotposer.

We agree! Very nice videos! Thank you!
I also had my legs wrapped up in the winter when l went fishing. I just had rubber boots and crocheted wool socks. Now, in my old age, just folow you on. YT can still. Live your life in freedom !
I really like the Foot bags, insolate from the grund, keep the legs warm and keep snow out.Alot of Coffee also helps you to stay warm.Have a wonderfull week !!!
To me, you are still the best travel content creator.
When I was a child my mother had us use plastic bread bags inside our boots. Works great!
I'm envious of the serenity you can experience. You are by far the smartest, & well informed, at this hobby of yours. Always like your videos. Thanks for sharing. From Chicago Illinois U.S.A.
There's no substitute for experience! Great tips Eric! 👍😎
This is the only YT-Channel where I use my best headphones for every video. The sound quality is amazing! Thanks Erik, your work is very well appreciated!!
Dear friends of the sun and fans of Erik Normark! All of these wonderful coffee moments are sure to cost a bit of money. Today on St. Nicholas Day let's do something in Erik's boot so that we can also be there next year with the best equipment. This project is worth supporting! A give and take. And in the inner circle that you get into as a result, there is even more information. For example the best ad-free radio stations .
Erick the Great I am thousands of miles away from you but could feel your great hard work! Lot of love and great respect from a solo mountain hiker from the Lower Chitral District of Pakistan.
Old Finnish way is to layer the bottom of the boot with couple of layers of newspaper and switch them with dry ones couple of/a few times a day. The newspaper absorbs the sweat from the feet ergo making the foot dry. I've been the newspaper method for years now. Can recommend. Haven't heard about this plastic bag method yet.

Reminds me of being a kid here in Canada. We would stuff newspapers into our coats on cold days.
The sound of silence in the snow is magnificent!
Where I live (Australia.), probably never going to need that knowledge but 'knowing stuff' is always fun and knowing about the problems of cold weather is useful in my writing. Thanks Erik.
As always Erik comes up with the most sound advice about the simplest of things. Terribly frustrating to have wet cold feet. Thanks for the tips. Bushyboy Oz.
I will never complain about an Australian winter ever again! Thanks Eric👍
Even in Brisbane Australia, I can take a leaf out your book of excellent hints for footcare. It's raining cats and dogs. I also watch you for your calming voice. Thanks so much Erik. 🐞🇦🇺Trudi
The best thing to help keep feet warm is to reduce sweating. My feet sweat profusely so before a cold weather hike I spray my feet with a antiperspirant and it works wonderful to help prevent your socks and shoes from getting soaked.

That’s an idea
Yes, I love the silence...so rare in this noisy world these days. And...Foot bags! What a clever idea! And of course coffee...a "holy moment!" Thanks!
Not only holy moment in this video but also useful information! And sounds of crackling fire and silence of the winter forest... Charming and calming.
Thanks for sharing your experience with this oft-overlooked subject, Erik. The vapor barrier is essential in the conditions in which you filmed this post, and you've probably saved many winter hikers with less experience from a lot of misery. Your observation regarding the silence of the snow is spot-on. The silence out there in the wild places is why we go there, and in the dead of winter in a dead-still snow-covered landscape one certainly can hear it. I've always been dismayed, after hiking for a day or two into the wilderness, to hear commercial airliners overhead. But where you are seems to be outside of the airline industry highways. You choose your locations well! Cheers.
The foot bag is made by Helsport, in case people were wondering. Personally, in addition to what Erik uses, it's important to go up min. 2 sizes. You have to be able to wiggle your toes, with the extra wool socks.

I always struggle with this, ill go up in size but at that point my boots and feet feel big and heavy and it becomes a huge compromise, the hike becomes a struggle and it kills my enjoyment. You’re definitely not wrong, its just a battle I’m always trying to handle

Any idea where we can buy those foot bags? I’ve been trying to find them online but they don’t seem to be available. I contacted the distributor in Canada and they don’t carry them.

@@alexl8328 I use a pair of Outdoor Research Brooks Rangers Overboots. These are I think better than the boot covers shown in the video. I can fit my mountain boots easily inside, or just my duck 🦆 down booties inside if I'm stationary and want warm comfortable feet without a fire or heater.
Mycket bra undervisningsfilm. Tusen tack för dina nyttiga tips!
I work outdoors in the cold and I use the plastic bag trick. It really is simple and works wonders. Great advice thanks!
I've been using sealskin waterproof socks as a vapor barrier for 3-4 years now. They acts as an inter sock and vapor barrier. I usually carry 2 pairs on multi day trips. Whichever pair is not being worn stays in a dry bag against my body. This way I always have a dry pair.
absolutely perfect information there , just remember to cut your toenails first and 2 pairs of socks at least.. one to sleep in and one to walk in .. i find that news paper can help absorb some of the moisture as well if you stuff the boots with it , but awesome info there ..happy trails love the winter time and to camp in it , cold feet and cold hands can destroy that pleasure but armed with a good way to combat this makes all the differance ,,,thank you Sir , Just love the boreal forests in the winter time
Great information Mr Erik. Thank you.

Greetings from Scotland 🏴
Very good tips, thanks for posting this.
Thank you for the video, very useful information.
It's interesting to learn how others care for themselves. Here in Central Florida I probably never will have to do that. When visiting other states it is very useful information and nice to know , especially in the winter months.

Erik, absolute fab content!👍 Not only are you managing the environment but bringing functionality into the well-being in the nature! Greetings from Finland and enjoy your week, Br, Janne
Tack för bra tips! Alltid så trivsamt att titta på dina videos till morgonkaffet.
We used to use plastic bread bags, in the same way, when we were kids in northern Minnesota sixty years ago. It's good to see it still works.
Love the plastic bags. I believe I got the idea from you and utilized them last winter on my first trips and noticed that even at -30F my feet were toasty warm. Thanks for all you do for us all to learn such valuable wisdom.
My favorite tip is to use wool insoles, socks and avoid goretex or waterproof linings. I like leather boots with a large toe box. The leather breathes and keeps your feet drier than Goretex boots. In temperatures below 0C, you don't need waterproofing and it traps moisture (even though it is supposed to be breathable). I always choose wool and breathable materials for winter, and avoid waterproof materials. Of course, I do not camp outdoors, so it maybe different for winter camping. I wonder if wearing a waterproof sock inside out would achieve the same result as using a plastic bag.
Another great video Erik! I can absolutely confirm the old Plastic-bag trick is really great, if you can stand smelly socks in the tent 😅
Great video
Tack, bra tips med påsar i skorna. Ska testa och ha det i tumvantarna. 👍🏻🙋🏼♀️
Great video. Very good advice 👍
Really enjoyed watching this lovely video, have a lovely weekend and please stay safe debs
Thanks for the heads-up Erik, I will be checking into this equipment. Play safe from Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Merry Christmas and all the very best in the New year Erik.
Hello 👋 Erik. Warm wishes to you from Northern California. Thank you for sharing this informative video. You always keep the outdoors person informed on how to survive comfortably in the outdoors. The very best to you, my friend. Stay safe and healthy out there. 🤗
Yes, Isolation , it's so good and I like that Thanks you very much Erik
Good ideas Eric. I've made heat reflective leg gaiters that I wear over my polypropylene bottoms and then my nylon wind/water resistant pants. The leg gaiters weigh under an ounce/13.9 gm for the pair. They are water and wind resistant, breathable and of course heat reflective, adding about 9.5 deg. C.
Straight forward, no bullshit ! thanks
GREAT ERIK
The plastic bag is a great idea, thanks for the tip
Brilliant advice Erick, to stop blisters I message Vaseline on my feet from the ankles down , over and between toes, heels soles etc. Then 1st sock on and tucked into my polypropylene tights, then 2nd a neoprene wading sock , 3rd my boot . I cant wait to try the plastic bag advice. "LIKED" cheers mate from New Zealand
Good instructions
Good and simple advice. 👍
You are a wonderful person. Thank you Mother Nature and thank you for showing us a wonderful video. It's a really cool video.
I always do the vapour barrier also, it works like a charm
Fantastic informative video, thanks Erik as usual you come to the point and explain without excessive info. what has to be done to keep your feet warm. Love it and I also like to listen to the silence of the forest, it calms me. Just subscribe to your channel,
i find the best way to keep my feet warm is to sit at home and watch your videos lol
Amazing 👍
Jack Stephenson of Warmlite pushed vapor barriers for years. They make vb socks, gloves and even shirts out of a material they call fuzzy stuff that feels kinda like flannel.
Good solid advice in an appropriate setting. The tree roots from the fallen tree would make a great warmth reflector for the fire:-) I would also add how important it is to keep the legs warm so that the blood is not cooled on its way from the core to the feet. The long footbags are great for that. My experience is that once that blood is cold you mostly need an external heat source to warm it up ;-) I always wear an extra base layer and carry a light pair of insulated overtrousers for stops in -10C and below :-) Great video. Looking forward to the next one :-)
🌟🎀Have the best festive season, Erik.
Great ideas Erik that I’ll try! Cold feet makes hunting in a tree stand miserable!
Thanks, Erik. 🙂☕👍
Thank you for the tip with the plastik bag… that‘s great ✌🏻😎
