How To Keep Hoyas Alive in Winter
Hello! Today I wanted to talk about how to keep hoyas alive in winter! I know this is a challenge for some and especially when it comes to more finicky species, so I hope this video will be helpful for you!

I love my MARS Hydro grow tents and grow lights, especially in these winter months. I grow my hoyas in them all year round, but they are most useful when cold winter rolls in. My hoyas continue to grow and bloom, and it is much easier for me to keep the humidity and the temperature up in these grow tents. Out of all the things I tried, I genuinely believe this is the best way to overwinter your tropical plants!

What hoya do you find to be most difficult to keep alive in winter?
@amandamack9258

I really struggle with over watering my tiny hoyas that aren't well established. I've had to chop and re-root several over the past 6 weeks.

Hoya dennisii is giving me some trouble, as well as hoya imperialis.. they like to drop leaves in winter…

@@amandamack9258 I am sorry to hear that! I have my small hoyas in pon, in a propbox, sometimes up to a month until they establish a bit and then I move them to a warm place, like my growtent. Some small leaved hoyas are a bit difficult in the beginning - my microphylla needed months to establish.

@@farinsexplodiertefreundin215 I don't grow imperialis for now, perhaps again in the future. I think it would like to be on the warm side? My dennissii seems to like the grow tent and more water. But it is easier when you have it in a warm spot with light.

I live in Northern Minnesota. Winter can be 9 months out of the year! My family will tell you that the most amazing plant we have ever come to know, is my Mom's Hoya! She has owned it for 55 years. It was owned by a friend for decades before her. I have no Idea where it originated. It's been chopped and replanted so many times. I have known it to grow to cover a wall. It's been the sole survivor of all her plants when the house has frozen by accident at least twice. It has lived in almost complete darkness (all curtains closed) after Dad died in February and no one went back home for many months. Also, we have accidentally forgotten to water it for waaaay...too long. I have recently taken interest, well, acquired an addiction, to Hoyas. So, Mom's Hoya has become more important and interesting to me. I have taken cuttings now for myself. We always have referred to it as a Carnosa, but have always been unsure of exactly what it is because carnosa are so varied and its unlike what we find in stores today. I've not killed a Hoya yet. I have 19. But, I honestly have never had a plant die. (Oh don't fail me now!) Tropical fish; that's a different story. : (
"...I'm not blind, I'm insane."🤣🤣🤣🤣.
seasons don’t even apply to me because i’m growing my plants year round with artificial light and humidity 😂 but i’m still watching because i could just listen to you talk about Hoya alll day long
This is one of the most useful videos on Hoyas I have ever seen. Thank you! I am bookmarking this!

I always hit "like" immediately. 😂
I'm fortunate that the winters in my part of Canada are filled with plenty of sunshine. It's cold AF -30C but the sun is almost always shining 🙂 But with the heater constantly running humidity is my issue, 20% humidity is probably the highest it'll be in the dead of winter. I find I need to water more because It's sooo dry.

Lucky still! It is cold here (for us), which means 0C. That is probably laughable to you :D But there is almost no sun. :( I wish I could pack my humidity and send it to you, I sure don't need it. 😂

Thank you for the video. We are headed into winter here. I have 25 new hoyas.
This was such an informative video. I am saving it. I love when you give the actual names of the Hoyas and what conditions they like the best. Awesome! Now I have had my 3 Hs today I can take on the week. Hoyas, Hair and Humor. Thanks Miro. When the light shines on your hair it shows all the warm colors. Thanks for all the great info. I do want to be a member of the new world. 😁🌱💚🌱
Agreed - grow tents are hideous 😂 However... a friend gave me one she didn't want and it's a freaking game changer. So much happiness inside that bad boy. I can't believe the growth that's happened and the awesome aerial roots. Definitely going to add at least one more!

I agree so much! I was also thinking how awful they are and with my small tent I was not so happy. But big grow tents are really a game changer. They are magical :D And hoyas love them so much. It is really unfair to all of those I grow out of the tents :D

Heya! 😊 I'm not sure if you know this, but I believe your lovely camera is trying, first and foremost, to find and focus on your EYES, so when you want to do a close up of a plant, make sure you hide your eyes from the view of the camera and you'll get a faster focus 😊💞 Then you won't need to fight with your camera and you guys won't need a divorce later in life 😜😂 Love your humour, your honesty and your knowledge of hoyas (and other LESSER wondrous plant varieties... 🤷♀️🤣) Have a great day.. Be causcious not to become Hoyanoid! That's when you think done of your hoyas hate you because you have those favorites that you pay more attention to... You know what I mean... How in the back of your mind you feel bad for the more regular looking hoyas that you don't think of as much, it's just that the others are SO spectacular!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Have a great day! 😊

Thank you for this! I've been side-eyeing some thrips in the living room, dreading the treatment process.
I live in San Francisco so it’s usually around 60 degrees year round…right now my room has been as cold as 55 F at times and my plants haven’t suffered much besides losing a few leaves so far….luckily the Hoyas are completely fine! Must be acclimated, although I do have to use heat mats for smaller plants year round but not for my Hoyas so far
Praise the Lord for this wealth of tipps🙏 and btw: that undulata is about to bite the dust. Luckily I the backup cuttings are doing fine.

Thank you for this great information today! I’ve got a cool window(Las Vegas) that I took some sensitive plants away and wondered what Hoya I could give a light chill (55F) I wonder if it it’ll help them bloom? 🤷 💚😎💚
So I always followed the assumption I would need to water less in the winter. However, due to my heat making my home dry I actually need to water more in the winter. My plants still in soil dry out faster- but props especially in stratum fluva need more water! I left my micans under the vent on accident, and all of the aerial roots died in one night!
@BasiePlants
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it will depend on the home, but in general, people need to water less. I don't notice that much of a difference, but my hoyas stay in fairly similar conditions all year round.
who is also always annoyed when our hoya comedian closes his videos?
im curious were you get the wire mesh that you hand the plants from im haveing a hard time finding a source thanks

Aren’t Hoyas an understory plant? You wouldn’t think being an understory plant they would need very much light to grow? I guess I don’t understand .🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄💚🙃

No, they grow towards the top of the trees. They start as an understory plant but then they grow up. In fact, it is said that some from eriostemma section won't even bloom until they reach the top.
