    you should absolutely NOT put screening over ANY central air conditioning vents, registers, or return grilles, as any HVAC pro will tell you, this will put undue stress and strain on your air blower. it may not seem like much, but home ventilation is a very tricky thing to get just right, and if you slow the air flow, even by a little bit, it can make your house more muggy, keep it from cooling as well, cause condensation on your ductwork, leading to mold and mildew, and as i mentioned, can damage your central air's blower. if there are ants coming in thru your central air ducts, then they were not installed properly, as those ducts are supposed to be AIR SEALED with mastic and tape, and insulated at every register and grille. if this was not done, you can always do it yourself, though i realize that nobody likes to go into their crawlspace...

    Sink and bathtub drains too, at least for certain types of bugs in some areas. Taking the small extra step to always pull up the plug on all the drains in my house when I’m not using them has really helped with bugs. I have horrible entomophobia and every little thing counts. Gotta try the vents now, though I’m slightly terrified of what I might find after unscrewing the cover.

  • @HowToHomeDIY

    Yes unfortunately the drains can have bugs come up through it which is gross in and of itself! Definitely try the vent trick though. Honestly it cut down on my bugs by a lot! Also, if I had to guess, there probably wont be too many of them if any where you remove the cover. Hope this helps! Good luck with the pest prevention!

    Sealing up baseboards with caulking to fill in all gaps above and below the baseboard will help prevent insects that live inside the walls from crawling into the inside of your home. A good test is to take a business card and see if you can slide it under the baseboards around your house. If you can slide the card under the baseboard, that is enough of a gap for insects to crawl out from the walls into the house. Caulking will also work as an insulator to prevent cold air from migrating under the baseboards and coming inside. If you don't see a gap , it's still a good idea to apply caulking to the baseboard because gaps will form eventually. We sealed up all baseboards around the house and that took a huge bite out of insect traffic.

    Hey dealing with this now in some states that’s illegal And if you address the problem of bugs they should do that in the first place. They don’t because they want to be lazy and keep calling exterminators again and again, I didn’t ask my landlord as they are fully aware of the cracks and bug problems for nearly 2 years now refuse to do anything but send exterminators over and over. I had to get the city inspector to come get them to fix mice holes for the whole first year. SO TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT 😊bought my own caulk

The other thing is my basement has the exposed ceiling which is common but I constantly see bugs coming from here.. is there anything you can suggest that won’t cost a fortune? Should I just hang a mosquito net across the entire ceiling?😓 I recently purchased a bed canopy so I can sleep better as the firebrats started wondering to the warmth, jumping from the ceiling.. but I haven’t used it bc I’m afraid that when I’m half awake, I’ll lazy open the sides and let them in somehow.. they’re so tiny and fast :[ I currently sleep on a heavily sprayed outdoor teak lounger.. I wanted to even maybe put sticky traps on the ceiling or even bug spray the zippers I don’t know😣

    Any thoughts on preventing entry through a sump pump basin and are there any other special considerations I should have for bugproofing a basement? I'm getting ready to wall off a section of my basement to turn into an office and, unsurprisingly, the basement is where I've found the highest earwig concentration, which are the bane of my existence. I plan on completely finishing the office space and keeping it well-sealed from the rest of the basement, but I know if I don't prevent entry into the basement as a whole, eventually I'll have a nasty surprise come skittering across my desk. The windows and vents are easy enough fixes, but I have to assume the sump pump basin/drain is another easy access point. I'm planning on also walling off the section of basement where the sump pump basin is since it, my electrical panel, and the HVAC system are all neatly tucked away back there to make a convenient utility room, but again I feel that it'll basically just be delaying the inevitable in terms of keeping them out. I need to get this office space up and running before kids come along and take the bedroom I'm currently using, but I also don't want to commit to the switch until I have a solid plan in place.

    Hey Rvckus, you have a good question there. Now earwigs typically come in through cracks or holes around the house. I would definitely go around the outside of the house and look for any potential entry points. As far as the drains go, they do have some homemade mixes and things you can buy in the stores to pour down the drains to kill anything in them but there is no guarantee that if you are having bugs coming from there that they wont come back. Typically drain bugs are there because something in in the drains for them to feed on like food, hair, etc. So you might look into snaking it to make sure it clear and then also pour some cleaner down the drain. Other than that I would recommend also getting some pesticides to help kill off the earwigs issue and help prevent it. I have a video you can go check out with the products I use and recommend. A few of them will work well on earwigs. Hope this helps!

    I rent a house in the country and it needs work with air duct system, bathroom vents and window seals and doors.... But being a renter and not an owner... Not much I can do. I hate living with so many bugs. I don't mind bugs outside and camping etc .. but it is a bit much inside the home.

    Yeah renting does have it's limitations. But you can try to seal off any areas that you see bugs might be getting in. If the seals are bad though I would address these things with the landlord.

    I always wonder if bugs came through the plumbing vent and the furnace vent both located on roof. I thought about putting a screen on plumbing vent but not furnance vent to prevent blockage of carbon monoxide

  • @HowToHomeDIY

    @HowToHomeDIY

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey, yeah they will definitely try to get in however they can. To touch on the two that you brought up, I would not think they would be able to come in from a plumbing vent due to sinks having traps on them that should be sealed because of water being in them. Also, if you are in a area that freezes in the winter, I might be concerned that the top of the boot where the screen would be put could freeze over. The furnace vent though, I could see how they could let some things in. I have seen that there are some screens made for furnace vents but many complain that they aren't effective due to the holes in the metal mesh being too large. I am sure this is due to your concern as you smartly pointed out, of if the holes were smaller, it could cause blockage issues. Screens are definitely going to reduce air's ability to move. One thing you could try, and it would be some work, is you could remove the registers in each room and glue screen to the underside of them to help stop the bugs from getting into the rooms. Now this could cause a reduction in air movement indoors but I have seen people do this and said it works. Bugs coming in through air vents can definitely be an issue and debate exists as to what is the best way to tackle the issue. I hope this was helpful.

    Yeah that is never fun to walk into haha. Spiders are where other bugs are as they are the spider's food source. So cut down on the bugs you will cut down on the spiders. Lighting may be attracting bugs to that area, if they can be turned off it might be better to do that, you might want to try some DIY pesticides or have someone come spray, or try a bug zapper around those areas. Hope this helps!

    I have a serious mite problem in my apartment. I picked up an old wooden chest from a garage sale at a really good price, but now I wish I didn't see it. Took it home, stored it in my neighbors garage for only 2 days, Then I cleaned it out best I could and looked awesome. Took it in my pad and a week later I noticed a rather big bruise on my right shoulder. That turned into a scabby mess and day after day I got more and more rashes or bites. I looked like a big time user of Meth. This was back in June of this year, it's now December and I'm still covered in sores. I did go to a walk in clinic and the doc said just put athletes foot cream on the sores. THAT'S IT I wondered. ok did that and two weeks later did it again. Kept getting these dam sores and a weird ass feeling of my skin tightening up in many places. One night i even pulled a bug out of my abdomen, hurt like hell. Next day notice a bump on my thumb, grab tweezers and pulled another bug out too but noticed possibly another in my thumb. 4 hrs later with no luck, I go to the ER, early ass morning holding my thumb as tight as can be because this bug may go back into my body if I let go. The doc comes in and looks and looks at my bump extruding out of my thumb and yells to let go of my thumb, I was hesitant to do that, she yells again to let go, so I finally did just that, pain subsided and doc says I dug pretty deep in my thumb and that was the meat under the flesh I was trying to eradicate. She quickly walks away, nurse says you can go now. WTF, I was thinking. I did mention before about all my other sores that may also be bug inhabited. Guess that's not important enough for this ER doctor to check out. Now sitting at home thinking OMG the only two hospitals around here and they're probably putting into record that I'm a fucking Meth head. So now it's December, facing same dam problem since June. Not able to get medical attention anymore. All I can do is tweezer myself by plucking all these fine hairs all over my body that I know are not my hairs. Sounds crazy, I know, And I can't tell anybody either. Word is I'm a Meth head so who will ever take me serious about this bug shit. I feel my life is over. Any Ideas, ANYBODY ? I take hot baths with no luck, bathed today again but took forever it seemed says my son. 5 razors trashed and came out looking 30 years younger and just hitting the puberty stage in life. Talk about smooth as a babies butt anywhere I touch my body. My son is still staring. Not sure I like his facial expression as it is. That to me is strange to see. Anyhow I need all the advice I can get, anything helpful. I'm a sponge now and will absorb it all, in other words "NEED INPUT". needed to insert a bit of humor to keep my spirits up.

    Don't know if you're still dealing with this but make a detailed video showing the bugs, the sores, and especially take video if you end up removing any more bugs. Bring that video to the hospital. If they're not treating a condition that is detrimintal to your health, and they keep refusing treatment, talk to a lawyer. Also, you migh tnow want to hear this, but it is also possible that you may be experiencing a mental health crisis. Pay very close attention to what the medical staff say. Ask them if they are seeing th ebugs. If they see no signs of these bugs, you may also want to dial 989 for the mental health line and ask how you can get some help as soon as possible. Try your very best to listen to what people are telling you. I hope you weren't having a mental health crisis and that the bugs were real and you were able to take care of them. Take care :-)
