HOW TO Kayak River Fishing - Beginner, Moderate, & Advanced

Kayaking & Kayak fishing are completely different. These 3 levels show the differences in a river's difficult for a kayak river angler.
Calm water, fast water, portages, center river obstacles... it's a lot to remember. In this video I break it down to three simple levels to remember. Beginner, moderate, and advanced.
In respect of local anglers I do not name any river/stream that I fish. Please respect my "no-name" policy and do not post the names of any spot in the comments. Thank you for understanding!

Good points 👍, Best thing you can do is to learn how the CFS(cubic feet per second) and gauge height relates to conditions at your particular river. The USGS has this data on many rivers and once you get a feel for the CFS of your river it's easy to figure out conditions. The thing to keep in mind is CFS does not apply from one river to the next, for example a CFS of 8000 on the Wisconsin river does not equate to 8000 CFS on the Milwaukee river which would be way above flood stage. The USGS also has valuable information like the mean CFS and height and high and lows for particular dates. The other key thing for river fishing is a shallow water anchor system like the power pole micro, or similar type gravity operated system. You generally want to stay away from any River after a heavy rain as your type 1 can become a type 3 😀

Type 1 can become a type 4 after some rain :) Haha. The CFS in some of the rivers I run can jump from 200 - to 2,000. Really sporadic and kind of crazy. Always good to keep an eye on that.

Yep, that can really happen fast down stream from a dam 😀

Very useful video. My ideal fishing day is a drift on Level 2 water -- just enough obstacles to keep the motorboats away, but not enough to detract from the fishing. I love reading moving water to find fish. I sometimes feel lost fishing a lake. I'd really like to try a guided outing with you, maybe when they finally open up the border; I'm on the other side.

@Jim King Yeah, for sure. Too many obstacles does detract from the fishing. And, totally agree, you do need some to keep the motors away! :)

When you go down down stream how do you transport your kayak and yourself back to car. What’s your system for transporting down stream but you only have one car. This is my shruggel only having one car and then if I would go down stream I’d be away from my car. How do you do it.

@jack ritter Well, it's a hard process. There are really only two options - one, start earlier and paddle upstream half the day and then float back down. Or, pay someone to shuttle your vehicle from the putin to the takeout. There is no easy middleground.

When your kayak turned over and you jumped or got dumped into the water, did your body hit a bunch of rocks hard or did you just sort of float over them with the current?

Hit some rocks - had some very nice bruises to show for it. The adrenaline of the situation didn't really let me feel them until later. I was actually quite stupid and attempted to stand which is a no-no when in white water. I should have gone about it differently - but it turned out alright.

Never underestimate how dangerous it is to glide in the direction of fallen tree branches in a river, even in mild current. Level 2 obstacle but level 5 safety risk.

@Mat. .N. I totally agree. It freaks me out when I see people in rivers with dragging ropes and lines in the water. Such an easy way to have massive shenanigans.
