I never understood how anyone has to be told to be prepared for flipping. I've only fished on lakes and ponds but I still prepare. I have a crate with a lid that I keep most stuff in, but I also tie my rods and paddle to a leash attached to the crate

Yea.... Getting out for the first time on the river here in NC. Aint gonna BS you..... Im kinda nervous about it. However thats one of the reasons I bought the thing. Had it on calm water several times. But I have got the itch really really bad to go catch some brooks and browns. Maybe even some small mouth. Wish me luck.

Nice! Happy paddling and fishing! I just finished spending a week of paddling in NC - New River, Wilson Creek and Nantahala River. Love that place...

Good tips! I’m a new kayak fisher in Alabama. I have a short 3.6 mile stretch on Pea River that I’m trying to make the most out of. If I only paddle to straighten myself out, the current can get me through to my pick up point within 2 hrs. I haven’t really figured out how to cast while moving. Should I be casting ahead of me? Behind me? One of my biggest obstacles so far has been trying to make sure I don’t run into fallen trees while I am distracted by my line. Also, are there any tips about my kayak always wanting to travel backwards? If I don’t maintain my paddle I always seem to turn around and travel backwards downstream.

Glad it was helpful! The trick with casting while you're drifting downstream is keeping the right action with your lure. If you're throwing something that you need to work slowly, you'll need to cast downstream so that you can give the lure slack. When you cast upstream, your drift will pull the lure through the water - almost like trolling. For the best control of your lure, it's best to cast sideways, and slightly forwards. As for your kayak wanting to go backwards... not much you can do about that, unless you get a kayak with a rudder. This will help it stay on track... but fishing kayaks still have a tendency of turning when you stop paddling. This is because they're designed to be maneuverable. As a general rule, the longer the kayak, the less it will want to turn. Hope this helps!

I'll do that when I get a chance. It's hard to find good spots to demonstrate that where I live.
