How To K-Pop: Topline Melodies

Музыка

Welcome to part 6 of our How to K-Pop series and part 2 of our Topline series, where we break down how K-Pop toplines are made, what makes a topline catchy and interesting, how to do vocal production and much more, of course with plenty of K-Pop songs as examples. These techniques are used by prolific songwriters and topliners across various styles, and we are sure to feature some of your favourites as well. If you are learning how to make K-Pop, this is the series for you!
We are continuing our series on toplining by explaining what melodic contour is and exploring the most common melodic shapes. We also point out two very important aspects of melody writing - starting pitch and melodic range. This video is perfect for anyone who is just starting out with toplining, or anyone who needs a refresher with a K-Pop twist.
We demonstrate how toplining is used in the industry. We highlight how the very basic melodic shapes have been used time and time again, but more interestingly, how they are combined to build intricate toplines. We demonstrate how varying the starting pitch of the topline as well as its range in each part of the song makes new sections feel fresh. Next time we are exploring rhythm, and after that we are thoroughly exploring how melody and rhythm can be combined for great topline arrangements.
