How to Jump Start your Car! The Safe Way.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Experiencing a flat car battery can be a hassle, but with the right know-how, you can get back on the road in no time. This video provides a comprehensive guide on how to properly and safely jumpstart your car. It also features interesting data on the electrical process using a data logging multimeter and current clamps to measure the current from the donation car to the car with the dead battery, as well as from the battery to the starter motor during the jump.

I've never known why the recommended method is to put the dead car's black jumper lead onto some metal, now I do. Thanks for the explanation.

Glad to help! It also eliminates the potentially troublesome negative lead from the battery to the starter on the dead car.

I was surprised by the amount of current provided from the idling zook, no doubt in part due to those stonking jumper leads. I noticed some mentioning using AGMs to help start the car and querying about using Lithium battery. Lead Acid (AGM) is very forgiving and will self limit current, but Lithium batteries have a BMS which will kill the output if an over current condition is present, so under some circumstances, a Lithium battery will leave you stranded while using good jumper leads like yours and a cheap jumper lead will probably give a better outcome by limiting the current due to the cheap jumper leads internal resistance and so not triggering the BMS shutdown of the Lithium battery.

Usually lithium BMSs will also have a much higher surge rating that could potentially help in a jump starting situation.

Lots of us jump start our 4WD's using the second battery, being an AGM battery. Especially when out in the bush alone. Now that many of us are running a Lithium battery as a second battery, it would be interesting to know the pros and cons of attempting this task. Is it possible, is it safe and will the lithium battery be damaged ? Or will it upset the BMS in some Lithium batteries, which may prevent a large burst of current to jump start a car ? That might make for an interesting video ?

It would depend on the battery, it wouldn't be as easy as hitting a button like you can do with the likes of a Redarc voltage sensitive relay, but definitely doable.

Agreed, it does depend on the battery, mainly the BMS. However, if you leave the batteries connected for a while, as Simon has already shown, enough power will transfer to the flat battery that it should be able to provide the starting current, even if the donor battery can't supply the cranking current.

After you connected the batteries and idled the car with the woking-battery for 5 min, do you switch off its ignition, before you are to start ignition in the dead-battery car, or do you leave it idling while you ignite the dead-battery car?

  • @LockyourHubs4WDing

Still idling, you can also increase the revs of the good car, so the alternator can deliver more current for starting the dead car.

I'll just mention something I learned some time ago, which stopped me buying any more Optimas for 4WD use: Although they are a fantastic battery, which is designed to handle rough use, such as bouncing over rough tracks, when they fail it's normally catastrophically. Most lead/acid batteries will usually fail in one cell first and such a battery will still work well enough to get you back home. With Optimas it's normally all or nothing.

@@SirFuseable hmmmm, never heard that one. My first blue top in the 'Cruiser lasted about 8 years, and died of old age just like any lead acid, (a bit slow starting for a while, then just about didn't start the car)
