How To Isolate Vocals & Instruments In FL Studio (Stem Separation Tutorial)

Музыка

In this FL Studio beginner tutorial, I will show you how to isolate vocals and instruments and separate stems in FL Studio 21.2. Stem separation means splitting a song into its fundamental elements, like vocals, bass, drums, and instruments. FL Studio 21.2 introduces a new AI-based stem separation too, which can easily split any song into stems. This is great if you want to isolate vocals, or just remove vocals from a song and make an instrumental version in FL Studio. It's now easier than ever before.
This is a great feature to have if you're a music producer who wants to make a remix of a song, and you just need the vocals. You can then split the stems, and save only the vocal stem. Or perhaps you want to make a karaoke version of a song? In that case, just delete the vocal stem, but keep everything else, and you have a karaoke version / instrumental version of the song.
This works best when using a song with high audio quality, such as a wav file. Low bitrate mp3 and such is not ideal. The stem separation process is not non-destructive, so often times the separated stems can sound a bit muffled.
In this tutorial, I will show you some tricks and tips on how to enhance the final result after you have separated the stems in FL Studio. This will enhance the result and make it sound a bit crisper. Especially if you're making a karaoke version or instrumental version, and some of the instruments are phasing in and out a bit.

    I've never touched FL Studio until right this second, mate: this tutorial is incredible! You're so coherent and concise. I don't know nothing about anything but this video truly helped me out. Thank you so much!! I couldn't locate the button that plays the different stems but the fact that you left that in the video showed me how to do that. It's small things like that that truly make a tutorial like this phenomenal. Seriously, thank you, thank you! Now I'm on my way to make the mashups of my dreams! :D

  • @FireWalkMusic

    It's a bit hit or miss, as with all these AI stem separation tools. It depends on a lot of factors, like the sonic content in the song, as well as the audio-quality of the song itself. Low-bitrate mp3 files will almost always produce significantly worse results than a lossless format, like wav. The vocals can sometimes overpower other elements in the background. In some tracks where you have a lot of people singing simultaneously, and they are very up front, then there isn't a lot of information left from the original instruments in the background, so they will tend to drop in and out quite a bit when the vocal is removed. Audio compression can also play a role. If a track is extremely compressed, with a very restricted dynamic range, the result will also tend to be worse. Extreme auto-tuning and vocooded vocals will also tend to mess this up. However, if it is a well-balanced mix with instruments and a vocal that does not clash much, the mix isn't too busy, and the audio quality is optimal then it can produce some excellent and very usable results. :)

    I have the same version (v21.2 build 3842) and I didn't have any problems. It downloaded it in about 5 seconds. To be fair though, I have a gigabit internet connection. What took a while was separating the song into stems.

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    I believe it's because the processing is partially happening in the cloud. When I split stems in FL it takes about 20 seconds. When I do it in Izotope RX, it happens locally on my computer only, and it will usually take 8-9 minutes to complete for a typical 3:30 minute song, so it is much slower. Verify that your image-line account settings are correct. If you can't make it work then I recommend that you contact image-line on the official forum, or submit a support ticket. They are usually pretty quick to reply.

    @@PoshTajir Gaming laptops are usually pricier because they have a pretty beefy and expensive graphics cards, and you don't really need that for music production. I would go for one with the best CPU. A 3000 series GPU will be more than good enough. You don't need the newest 4000 series for music production. There are some plugins now that can take advantage of GPU acceleration but it's not many, and even older GPU's will provide more than enough power for that.

    @@BtGram This software has been developed and updated since 1998. Can you name one team of developers that has been making and developing software for free for that long? Most software like this is not free. It's an extensive piece of software. Like a complete studio in a box. If you go to a dedicated studio to get your audio needs covered, it will cost 10 times more than the price of this software. The developers all need to make a living, and they have to feed themselves and their families just like everyone else. I actually think this software is pretty cheap compared to the competition. Cubase for example is almost four times as expensive. Even my video editor is pricier than this. I recently purchased Topaz video AI and it too was pricier than this. And the commonality with those is that you typically also have to pay for updates. if I want to update my video software it will be $170 every year... Now imagine doing that since 1998... That would be $4420 just for updates over 26 years. FL Studio doesn't do that. They charge you once, and then you own the software for life, and every update is free from that moment forward. You get new plugins and features for free for life after that. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Not many developers offer a deal like that. :)
