Very informative. I have a simple question though. Say I invest the minimum which is 100k, and I get a rate of say 16% interest at end of maturity for a 91 day bill, is the 16% applicable per annum or for the 3 months? Another question is, bow that there's withholding tax of 15% , does it mean I'm getting a profit of only 1% at end of maturity, or even less if the interest rate was per annum?

The best video i ever come across from a fellow Kenyan blogger... The 15% withholding tax is however not holding for me especially if you were to start with 100k only for 15% to be imposed. Does it mean you only get the discounted amount back at the end of maturity or there's a % interest too in the case of Treasury Bills...???

So the best way is to go and sell shares which I purchased through bank as a broker n I run toCBK.

Also, what do u mean, the returns are simple interest and not compound interest?

A little clarification. Upon maturity of the Tbill, does one only receive the face value of the amount invested or its that,together with interest?

You receive the face value, which is inclusive of the interest.

Amazing content. I was looking for something like this all over because I had a interest on treasury bill but am not in Kenya at the moment. One thing though, I came to Kenya for a short while and opened a CDS account through my bank. According to what you've said, its not a very smart way as the bank will eat up part of your investment.... "We charge a minimum of KES 1,500 or 0.13% of what you are investing."

Hi Jon, You actually don't have a CDS account with your bank. What you have is a nominee account: your bank has a CDS account with CBK and helps you and other invest in T-Bills through nominee account. Basically, your bank collects money from individuals like you and invests in T-Bills on your behalf through their CDS account and charges you a fee for that service. Nothing is going to happen. Go ahead and set up your CDS account with CBK and start investing directly for free.

Thanks for the video. You have mentioned that we should write our names on the mandate card exactly in the same order as they appear on the ID. I am a little confused because the mandate card starts with the surname, then middle name and lastly first name. This is completely different with the order on my ID. What should we do in this case?

Hi Mary, When you got your CDS account, CBK either emailed/texted your CDS/Portfolio account number and your Virtual Account number. You should use those details to send the money to CBK through an RTGS transfer. Ask your bank for specific instructions on how to go about it.

Concerning the 15% withholding tax on Treasury bills, is it imposed on the interest or on the total amount at the end of the given period?

Yes, if you invest through a bank, stock broker, licensed investment advisors etc. They will bid and invest on your behalf, but will charge you a management fee.

It's not wise to do that because it'll not earn you any interest: your money will be losing value. My advice is that you should deposit the small amounts in a Money Market Fund which will earn you compounding interest. Go to Central Bank, collect the application forms, fill them, take them to your bank for verification and return to CBK...what I'm saying is: don't feel stuck, create your own CDS account and dump your broker 😂

Hi Agatha, Once again thanks for your educative content. Going by your help, I managed to make my first investment in the latest issue of T bills. I successfully made the payment and through cbk-tmd service I could see the amount reflected as payment balance. However, through the same cbk-tmd process, my portfolio balance keeps reading zero (even T bill balance reads zero). I am so much concerned as to whether this is normal or something could be wrong somewheres. Kindly educate/advice me. Thank you. With regards.

Hi Ronald, Do 2 things: ☑️ Confirm with your bank that the money was successfully wired to CBK. If it was wired, then... ☑️ contact CBK to explain the issue and ask them to confirm that they received your money. Write to primaryissues@centralbank.go.ke

I have a few questions. 1)If I manage to open the account with central bank and leave the country. do I still have access to my account using the USSD code? 2) For me to use the USSD code, do I have to be in kenya OR I just need to have a Kenyan phone number? 3)If I have a Kenyan number but live in the diaspora, can I still follow the same steps? (even if it will be long distance for me) in order to keep the account active
