BUILDING WEALTH IN 2024:
-Optimize for Cash
Start by tracking all of your expenses and income over the next 60 days using software like RocketMoney, YouNeedABudget, EveryDollar, MonarchMoney, or even your own excel spreadsheet - and then, log every single penny that goes into and out of your account. There has never been a better time in the last 20 years to earn money on your money, since High Yield Savings Accounts are almost ALL paying over 4% APY.
-Pay Down High-Interest Debt
The average American now owes more than $22,000 - Credit Cards, Car Loans, and Personal Loans make up almost ALL of this - and, at today’s interest rates, this could EASILY be costing you thousands of dollars per year. In terms of the HOW to pay down debt as fast as possible - you have two ways:
The first is called “The Avalanche Method,” and mathematically - this is the perfect way to pay down debt. This is because you’ll begin paying down the highest interest-rate debt, first, that’s costing you the most money - and then, once that’s fully paid off - you’ll pay down the next highest interest-rate - and the next - and the next - until eventually, it’s all paid off.
The second method takes on a more psychological approach, and that’s called “The Snowball Method.” This works by paying off the smallest balance first, regardless of the interest rate, and then paying off the next smallest balance. The reason this works is because you’ll get the “win’ of paying off a debt, in its entirety - and by seeing results, faster, it’ll be easier to stick with it long term.
-Creating a Roth IRA
This is an account that you contribute up to $7000 per year into - and then - by the time you’re 59.5, you can pull out all of your profit, completely tax-free. Not to mention, the ideal time to start and contribute to this account is when you’re young and not earning a lot of money, since - one: You’re probably already in a low tax bracket, so you have more after-tax income to invest, and two: You’ll have decades to allow compound interest to grow your money into something significant.
-Choosing Your Investments
First: Diversify.
You NEED to spread out your money across different companies, sectors, and areas so that if something happens to one - you’ll have others to fall back on.
Second: Don’t Try To Beat The Market.
Even though it’s tempting to want to utilize alternative investments, pick individual stocks, and create your own portfolio to get higher returns - the reality is: almost everyone fails.
Third: Research Index Funds.
A few years ago, Warren Buffett famously said that this is the single best investment for the vast majority of people. Index Funds cover a wide variety of stocks and industries, they’re well diversified, and - they’re really cheap to own.
Fourth: Assuming you can follow the above - Dollar Cost Average and Do Nothing.
Overall, if you want to build massive wealth - long term - all of it starts with the boring basics: Optimizing your savings, reducing high-interest debt, investing in tax-advantaged accounts, diversifying your investments, setting realistic expectations, and then - sticking with it consistently for decades.

If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life.

It's a common misconception that when a stock you buy skyrockets, the smart thing to do is sell it (or at least sell some of it) to lock in your profits. But the context matters. If the stock has increased sharply because the business is performing exceptionally well, it could still be a bargain. We say that but the schools won’t do it right. Parents are responsible for teaching things too. Learn financial literacy and teach it yourself our kids. We under pay teachers and expect them to do everything. Nope.
Most people never hear the phrase, “Stop spending money!” I retired two years ago at 57 years old. Both the wife and I had good incomes, lived debt free, frugally and invested at least 30-40% of our gross income. We also purchased rental properties. Many of our colleagues and friends were always wasting money on vacations, eating out and new cars that they leased or financed instead of paying cash.

@@GOOFYGAMER12 This is a great point. You absolutely must find a work/life/investing balance, because guess what... At 57 a cancer diagnosis is much more likely to be a death sentence than at 27. You're not a young buck anymore, you're an old stag, and your best years are behind you. Your life needs to feel fulfilling along the way, you can't just wait until the end. Vacations, assuming they're not unnecessarily lavish, are some of the best things you can treat yourself to along your financial journey.

I am buying more VGT, SCHD & VOO. Many of us have a boatload in the S&P500 index in ROTH, still have the bulk of my $500k retirement portfolio in VGT. In my taxable account, i try to beat my roth and i know it can be done but i am still underperforming the S&P500.

I’m taking the hybrid approach, VOO, SCHD as my foundation, with growth like MA, UNH, HD. And slow growth like O and PEP. I have a 20 year time horizon. But the best part is I still enjoy my life while I do this. Travel, and buy ONLY things I love. It’s the best combo, plus I love the small victories with receiving dividends/dividend growth/share price appreciation.

VGT is an excellent portfolio addition, but relying solely on it for retirement may not be optimal. I retired at 62, grew my portfolio to $3.4 million in little over 10 years through the help of a fiduciary and dividends now supplement my retirement income. This is not a guide on how to get rich, it's how to save now and then enjoy your money in the last 20 years of your life
Most Americans don't track their expenses and could be wasting money. People should prioritize building an emergency cash fund. Pay down high-interest debt before investing. Open a Roth IRA and invest for the long term. Diversify your investments across different asset classes. Don't try to beat the market; instead, invest in index funds. Invest consistently over a long period of time. Expect average returns of 7-8% over the next 20-40 years. The speaker's investment portfolio is split between real estate, index funds, cash equivalents, and alternative investments. Building wealth comes down to optimizing income and expenses, paying down debt, investing consistently, and diversifying.

Ah, say what? Maybe you should listen HARDER. Graham has always stressed the importance of diversification across multiple assets. If you had listened, you NEVER would have put your entire life savings into any singular place. It is not fair to try to blame Graham for this one. FTX had a better argument and even that one really falls apart under scrutiny.

Our kids have to track their own allowance on paper weekly as a bearer bond redeemable for goods. They use the honor system, keep a balance, and track all the purchases they make. We have done it for years and now they know their net worth in realtime and never spend more than they have. For parents out there, this builds integrity and budgeting and the net result is now they are all excellent savers.

Graham! Please note in your videos the contributions for Roth IRA are on a sliding scale. Even if your income is below the limit, you still may not be able to contribute the maximum amount. I had a mess of my taxes one year because I contributed the max amount and that was above the limit for my income. If you make between 147,500 and 161,000 the allowed contributions change
Best way to get rich is to not put money in Yotta and then get locked out of withdrawals. Please address this catastrophe in people’s lives.

FTX? YOTTA?
You mention sleeping well at night, which is a fantastic point of perspective for people to keep in mind as they contemplate what debt they choose to service, meaning pay interest on every month. The rule I have lived by for quite some time is if I owe money on something that is NOT appreciating in value, like a home, then I do everything in my power to eliminate that debt as quickly as possible, irrespective of the interest rate. In other words, I refuse to owe on anything that isn't an investment that is increasing in value. I do not service debt unless it benefits me and my family. The number of things that qualify are pretty small, but I avoid all of the other debt traps out there, like cars, electronic devices, home furnishings, etc.
Thank you so much for this information!!
