HOW TO insulate & batten campervan walls THE EASY WAY! Ducato/Boxer/Relay ep3
The third video of our 2018 Peugeot Boxer self-build camper conversion "FIRST FIX" series.
Here we batten out the walls of the van, fill with insulation & cover up with a vapour barrier.
During this stage we anticipate where our battening needs to be built up in order to accept the ply lining of the walls, as well as taking into consideration where extra support is needed behind the ply lining especially around areas where we are going to be fitting overhead cabinets... something you really want to get right first time round!

Doesn't compressing earthwool, wool, or recycled bottle insulation reduce it's effectiveness?
Legends can’t wait to see this finished!
Smashing these vids 💪
One warm van there ⚒️👍
Nice one guys!!
Dzięki. Pozdrawiam z Polski Wrocław 😜
What about the sound deadening?
I see you went with my idea above the side door 😂😂😂 I’m right 😂😂😂😂

You're rationed one win a week.. you had yours already lol
How did you get the ply over that middle section of the van . Also how did you fix the battening from the roof to the first cable tray

Dudes deffo an electrician??? I'm a chippy and I'm dreading the electric
😂 yes I feel her pain. No one speaks about how this alone takes time just to peel that tape 😂
very nice, but guys next time please control your sound decibels. Your audio is louder than your voices, please try keep it the same level, we want to hear what you say. It's a pain to switch off the loud audio everytime you stop speaking. But further nice video and safe travels. Enjoy van life
Interesting that you used loft insulation. Will that not collect moisture ? Just starting out, and bewildered by all the info available !

Hi bud, Yes it can all be very over whelming! If you want really good detail I'd suggest checking out Greg Virgoes video on insulation.. he explains what all the values actually mean... in short though.. the lowe the "k value" the better thermal conductivity, or lack there of.. RE Moisture... no not at all.. this is "earth wool" made by a company called knauf (links in the description) It's pretty much the "go-to" for most van builds.. its thermal conductivity rating 0.044 W/mk which is very good! (For comparison, celotex type stuff is circa 0.022W/mk) You would then want to use the "vapour barrier" (foil bubble wrap stuff) again link in the description.. which will stop any moisture getting to the earth wool. Hope this helps!

@@wildwingingit1283 ahh that's where you got the idea from... the infamous mr Virgo, that's where i started out and that's where my mistake was, after having discussions with pro van convertors the real go to for van conversions is Dacron type material such recycled bottles, whatever you do seek better advise on electrical systems dont follow his lead, i had a vehicle electrician look over mine when i finished and he couldn't believe what i showed him

How do you find the van in terms of noise and vibration as the sound deadening part was not installed?

Hi mate! sorry for the late reply! It's absolutely fine! This is the 3rd van we've done now, the first we didnt sound deaden... the second we did.. There was practically no difference. We dont scrimp on the insulation and really do pack it in so perhaps this aids in sound attenuation. Hope this helps!
Wow how much weight did that battening add. I’m super conscious of campervan weight it degrades performance and economy. I’m on track to keep my Sprinter below 2500 kilos without people and consumables
What’s the jig that you’re using?

from personal experience with this stuff thats the worst insulation you could of used ... it settles with vibration leaving gaps at the top and open spaces, i didnt use that on mt 3rd van build as i found it happened twice and it held moisture even when it was well packed
from personal experience from a previous van build loft insulation isn't the best bet as it vibrates down and leaves gaps and takes ages to dry when moisture creeps through and ruins the wood even with the bad idea of a vapour barrier, it stops the drying airflow through the van

Hi Vanda! Thanks for the comment bud! This is actually "earth wool" made by knauf, we were apprehensive at first also as the packaging it came in had "loft insulation" written on it. However after contacting the manufacturer they reassured us that they simply ran out of the "earth wool" packing during the lockdown etc but check the serial numbers and confirmed it was in fact earth wool, which seems to be the go to for majority or converters at the moment. These vans also have vents in the rear end just behind the arches (which are now behind the ply lining) which allow a good amount of air flow to circulate through the wall cavities. In this build we've also fitted a maxair fan & 2 separate extractors & will be fitting a truma combi 4e so were pretty confident we shouldn't have any issues with condensation or moisture build up. If we do then something has gone horribly wrong! Fingers crossed! 👍🏽

@@wildwingingit1283 That was the same stuff I used back 4 years ago, and iit wil still settle as the fibres will vibrate past each other.. yes the van has vents I fully understand what you are saying but it only that area that wil get the air.. It ruined the wood in my build and cost me a fortune to repair.. I hope you don't suffer the same issue as I did I wish you luck..

@@vandamonium1731 I used this stuff in my van 6 years ago. Just stripped everything out to do a full remodel in the van and it was like brand new still so I would suggest you did something wrong along the way whether you didn't insulate or vapour barrier correctly because there is nothing wrong with this insulation
