HOW TO ply line campervan walls - Peugeot Boxer SELF BUILD CAMPER - Boxer/Ducato/Relay ep4

In this video, we install the Ply lining in to our 2018 Peugeot Boxer.
At this stage we have already ran all our wiring, insulated / vapour barriered the van & fitted the necessary battening to accommodate the Ply lining.
We decided to go with 12mm ply instead of the normal 9mm.
This was definitely the most stressful part of the build so far! Lots of back and forth, trimming.. trimming & more trimming to get the panels to fit, but equally lots of laughs!
Overall, straight forward enough with some simple tools and know-how!

Hi, loving the videos. How did you batten the walls to take into account the middle vertical rib that sticks out further than the horizontal ribs? I started mine at the weekend and it sticks out a lot, esp at the bottom near the floor and I don't want to lose too much width.

Hi bud, Cheers man appreciate the feedback! We're sooo much further along but have an absolute mountain of editing to get through! So we battened up the sides of the ribs and used a planer to get the battens to sit as flush to the middle rib as possible. This meant that we could put the ply flush against the middle rib in order to keep as much space as possible. We then used a shed load of sel tapping screws & sticks like sh*t, starting from the bottom of the batten up towards the ceiling, to get it as tight to the batten as possible. We also looked around to see how people got past this, but I think this is the only way to be fair. Cheers

@@wildwingingit1283 Thanks for your reply. The editing is the reason why I'm not blogging this build! I do enough editing for my work and know how time consuming it is. Kudos to you. So for the middle upright, you battened along the side of it, planed the batten to keep the gap as small as possible. Brilliant. What about the horizontal ribs that sit further back than the upright? Did you batten these ont thier face to bring the ply inline with the vertical?

Thinking of taking the plunge on a similar van, trying to figure out where to put things. What is the internal width of the van on top of the wheel arches, wondering if we can fit a bed lengthways?

Hi Euan, Thanks for the comment, sorry for the late reply! So the width from wall to wall is just over six foot. We ended up putting the bed sideways across the width of the van... (next video coming tonight) I'm a smidge under 6ft and I can lay length in it very comfotably. Hope this helps!

Hi bud, So typically most people will use 9mm, although some do use 12mm. We went for 12mm for a couple of reasons. Firstly, 9mm simply wasn't in stock at the timber yard. As well as 12mm will give us more material to screw into when it comes to building the cabinetry, although we will of course try to use the Battens (behind the ply) to build off, unfortunately because of the carcass of this particular van the Battens won't all line up with where we're going to want to screw onto with the cabinets. Of course the off set is that it's heavier on the walls, so we made sure to use heaps of screws on the ply lining not only into the Battens we installed, but into the metal framework of the van also. Hope this helps!

How many sheets of ply to line it as I'm going to do my ducato. ?.

Hi David, we bought 6 sheets of ply. We used them all but bearing in mind they were of course cut down. We used X2 sheets for the lower back i.e. from the rear doors running across floor and up to first batten / metal cross member of van body, and as far as the sliding door. So both were trimmed in length and width. We then used another X2 sheets to go from the top of these X2 previous sheets and up to the roof. X1 sheet length ways for the side window lower.(opposite sliding door) we had to used this length ways i.e. laying on it's side across the 8ft length, as the gap we were filling (between the bulkhead and up to the lower back sheets) was greater than 4ft. We then used a last whole sheet to frame the window as we wanted to keep this as one whole piece for strength rather than use X1 piece with X2 uprights for the window frame and a top piece with the same. Hope this helps!
